The NWSC is not a terrible conference, it is one of the best in the state, but i agree with every one else that Derek Loisel should not get drafted in the NHL. He couldn't even make his USHL junior team last year. He is no where near NHL quality, not even D1.

Too bad none of these players have French names, this seems to be a prerequisite for Jacques.

Is Nick Pryor of U-18 team going to graduate early or is that just a mis-print when it says he will be attending Wisconsin in 2008?

For a player to be eligible, he must turn 18 before September 15 of that year. So any player with a birthday after September 15th, 1990 is not eligible this year's draft

Not only is he not eligible, he's not even close. Remember, he's pretty young for his grade.

NHL's Central Scouting has released its midterm rankings for the 2008 draft. I have sorted out the MN/WCHA connections and have them listed on my blog. If you wish to take a look, just click on the link in my signature.

That's not exactly a problem in the new NHL. Yeah, 6'0" guys are nice to have, but a speedy, intelligent hockey player is still extremely valuable with the new standards of play.

My Prediction is Ness will drop to the late 5th round or 6th by the time the Europeans are included and the GMs get cold feet about his size on draft day. He would have a hard time moving anyone out of the front of the net in the NHL, which is a big part of defense. He may be good in HS but he does not have what it takes to make it in the NHL.

Are you serious? He will be a good college player with the big ice but take some advice don't go Okposo on the gophers, 4 years will serve him well.

Neal didn't play defense either. He's going to need to put on quite a bit of weight at the UofM to make a run at the pros. There's a lot of good college players that never make the big show.

Take a look at a couple Roseau Alum. Bryan Lundbohm (5'10" 185lbs) was asst. captain of the Sioux, won a national championship, and playing in Europe right now. Dustin Byfuglien(6'4" 245lbs) never played college hockey, didn't even play varsity for Roseau, and he's playing defense for the Blackhawks.

my guess is he will be taken between 55-70 overall. it's not the 157 i would worry about as a scout it's the 5-9. he might have a tough time in the ahl showing an nhl team why he should make their roster.
Or he could turn out like a john-michael liles from the av's. but he scored 35-40 pts a yr at michigan state and is putting up the same #'s in the NHL. Those are some big numbers for a d-man and that's not playing east grand forks and st cloud tech twice! Maybe ness can do it...he's only 17. time will tell.

I agree with you that he'll have to develop physically a good amount to make it in the NHL. At the same time, it seems like the NHL is starting to be (a little) more open minded about smaller defensemen. Probably because the crack down on obstruction has made mobility more important on defense. We don't have those big oaf defensemen who can't skate out on the ice quite as much as we used to.

But they'll always favor size to some degree and he'll have to overcome that stigma to some extent.
