An underdog Johnson team? Hard to say they were the underdogs since they split with Hill during the regular season (Johnson won the first game 4-1 and Hill took the re-match 5-2) and Johnson entered the State Tournament with a 22-3-0 record while Hill came in at 22-2-0. They also tied for the St. Paul City Conference title that year.

The two best teams in State 1984 hammered each other during quartefinals, taking both teams out of it for the rest of the weekend!

First Memory?

About 1963.

Watching my older brother's team "almost" beat the mighty Rams in EGF.

The EGF program was only about 3 years old and the team was "less than average"

But almost beat the Rams that day.
My brother was a defenseman and was hitting people as much as he could, but, in the end, to no avail.

Was fun to watch, and of course, I had to follow Roseau all the way to state.

I believe they took 3rd place.

Listening to the Greenway Raiders on AM during the late 60's.
They were the team I rooted for till I was old enough to realize I lived in the GR school district. :)

My first memory was sitting behind the penalty box at the IRA civic center with my dad watching the Indians play. My best memory was watching Chad Houson make the "save of the decade" in the 1990 state tourny were Rapids took second.

My first memory of high school hockey was The section 8 finals in I believe 99. When Apollo's Harrington hit the crossbar at the end of regulation. Then Roseau went on to beat them in 2 overtimes. I've hated Roseau ever since then.

I don't remember the exact years of each game but...

Edina and Eden Prairie playing the section finals that went MANY overtimes at Mariucci

Apple Valley and Duluth East in the State semis

2 of the greatest hockey games of any level that I've ever attended

1972 Bemidji Lumberjacks first state tournament. The town shut down and as I think about it we must have been let out of school early because I remember watching them play the Falls and it was one of the afternoon games. The 'Jacks got the first goal when the Broncos' goalie, Peter Waselovich skated over to the bench thinking a penalty was called when the ref had raised his arm for something else. The Falls stormed back to crush Bemidji though, 8-3.

My dad wasn't a sports fan but I badgered him into taking me to as many games in 1973 and 1974 as I could, the best game being a matchup with Grand Rapids at the end of the season in 1974 which Bemidji lost. They got the Indians back in the state tourney, only to get shut out by Edina East in the final. Those teams were to me what the North Stars were to kids in the Cities. Nostalgic Nerd, this was pre-Star Wars so I had to make my hockey players out Lego too.

Then I moved to Little Falls, which was a basketball town and didn't even have a hockey program at that point. So I lost the intensity I had for high school hockey in Bemidji only to find it again in 2002 when I dragged my kids to a game just looking for something to do on a cold winter night.
It's hard to win when you always lose.

My first experience with HS hockey was the state quarterfinals in the Dave Spehar years. Hooked me bad and I hoped someday I'd have a son that would play hockey. Now I have 3 sons. WooooooHooooo!
