Keep in mind, the Ice Dogs last goalie, Reiter, made it to D1 with UMD with a lot less "hype" as Joe. Personally, Joe has a TON of work to do but with time who knows what could happen. Good luck Joe.

Good luck to Joe - nice kid, nice family. He had an amazing tournament and was fun to watch. He shut down the very talented D1 kids on Edina so he deserves a shot! Best of luck to him and Dan Sova.

he is going to make it to DI - technically as sound as any goalie in HS. Couple of years experience with older players - he will play in a good program.

wow, I am surprised he didn't land with a USHL team and ended up so far out with an NAHL team. Dan Sova was at Sioux City's futures camp last year and I thought he was really good. Could easily be on a USHL squad.

Wouldn't you say you could compare Joe to Greg Stutz? Stutz had a great season in the 2003-04 season and then had 3 shutouts in the State Tournament. I'm not sure where Stutz went, but I'm pretty sure he didn't go Div.I.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Joe is a good goalie, but he was on an excellent team.

St. Mary's - DIII - knee injury ended his career.

Yep. He impressed coaches enough at their camp in Spooner that they bumped a vet off the protected list in order to protect Dan.

How did Dan Sova come up in this topic?

The thing that impressed me was Phillipi's drive in the State Tournament. Sure, he had arguably the best team in high school hockey in front of him. However, he had to make the saves. In the tournament he was unflappable. The grit that he showed will take him far in hockey if he maintains focus on his hockey aspirations.

Is a goalie important to a very good team? Ask Edina. Running two lines and shaky goal tending cost them in the end.

Flip had a lot to prove his senior year and especially on the big stage of the tournament. He came through when not many gave him a chance. So no matter how well the team played in front of him, he still played the 3 games of his career. Edina played very well in the championssip (if you've watched it as much as I did this summer, you'd know that) and it took a goalie on his head, a team willing to sacrifice and skate hard to backcheck and Ryan Furne being a sniper 3 games in a row for it all to come together. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Flip in a D1 jersey in the next 2 years...

After seeing Flip play in the state tourney, I would think a USHL team would give him a shot. I realize the consistency was not there all year but the way he stepped up during the biggest games of his life is something every coach dreams of in a goalie.
Everyone hates private schools (and Edina)!!

Give him a solid season in the NAHL. I think he just needs to "prove it" over a full season.

i dont think his size will be an issue as long as he can maintain the quality of play that he had throughout the state tournament. he reminds me a lot of lerg when he plays that quick and that solid like he did for those three games, it was fun to watch. if he keeps getting better i wouldnt be surprised to see him in a division one uniform in the next few years.

I heard a bizarre rumor the other day that Joe had received a scholorship offer from North Dakota. Can anyone confirm?

Looks like Phillipi is primarily the backup to a 20 year old kid, but has done well. In 9 games: 4-1-1 2.59 GAA .932 SV%

It actually looks like a lot of MN guys are doing well up there:

coulda sworn I saw him in a USHL game this year. Can't remember what team but can't miss the giant on skates with the name sova, pretty sure he isn't in alaska.

joe like all hill goalies that go nowhere, spend years in practice with about 6 games that mean something each year. HS goalies need games, real ones. USHL is heavy on the AAA teams from around the country they play 70 games a year.

He let some soft ones go in right under his feet too often for scouts to care. If he played for a lesser team those soft one would have numbered 2-4/game not 1-2, big difference, and yeah he had a great tourney this past year, but still had some great d in front. he just didn't let the soft ones go in that he is known for. needs to keep the stick on the ice.

A year or two in NAHL will tell all, either you are a top goalie in that league and move up to ushl or even d1 or you start thinking about d3.
