I don't agree with your comments about Edina kids that happen to attend private school. In the case of Anders Lee he may have gone to St. Thomas because of their hockey program, but Benilde? C'mon. For generations the Catholic school path in that area has been Our Lady of Grace for elementary school and Benilde later on. Naturally these private school kids play their youth hockey in the Edina system.

Ankeny has a brother, no? Maybe the plan all along was to go to Benilde and when they wound up being good at sports it made sense to transfer to the public school so he could play with his youth teammates.

The fact is that some kids go to private school. I don't see how Ankeny's loyalty to anyone can be in question here.

Sticks, I believe what I was told. Anders Lee went to St. Thomas so he could play Varsity as an 8th grader instead of playing Bantams. Correct away.

Anders Lee left because he still wanted to speed skate and play hockey, now obviously, that hasn't worked out but from what I understand, Anders got into with a youth coach about both and St. Thomas said we'd be glad to have you. Now obviously playing varsity in 8th grade doesn't hurt either.

Ankeny does have an older brother at Benilde, but I'm not sure how that means he is loyal to Edina or Benilde?

GOVS this is completely off topic but I have to bring it up...

I must say, I'm a little disappointed that you haven't started a thread about Johnson Hockey's bright future. Tony Villneauve aka Mr. Outlaw is enrolled at Johnson and is eligible to play due to the transfer exceptions with "divorced parents". As I understand, a player is allowed one move if their parents are divorced. Looks like Johnson is well on their way to a state title!

I still believe the transfer rule is totally wrong. Kids should be able to go to school where they want and do so for whatever reason they want. This is America. Some yahoos came up with this unfair rule to "protect" their programs and the weaker athletes and now we all have to suffer for it.

I believe Ankeny couldn't get a waiver last year as a transfer in from Benilde (I could be wrong about this) and was denied a year of Varsity as a result. Lee was just savvy enough to know about the March 30 deadline for the waiver - so he got to play. Two stories - same town - two different outcomes. Really dumb rule - both these boys grew up in Edina and should've been allowed to play - just like Webb. If you have enough money you can move anyway and get around the rule (these three guys just happened to grow up in Edina and live in Edina I believe). How about everyone else? Dumb rule.

It doesn't matter whether or not you think the rule is "dumb" - it IS the rule! When it was being debated there was plenty of opportunity for people to provide input, and they hashed it out until they reached a consensus.

If what's being said here is true, it's just a matter of one player beating the deadline, the other didn't - very simple. Once the rule's in place, you have no other choice but to enforce it.
