Warroad beat Tech 6-3 with an empty netter.
Ben Dover brought up "bus legs"...which to me sounds like a pretty fat excuse for why Cathedral beat Warroad.
But what's worse?
Cathedral and Warroad faced off with both teams in their 4th game of the week and Warroad has "bus legs".
Or...
Tech in their fourth game of the week vs. Warroad's fifth.
Really, which is worse?
Granite City Classic

Let's not forget that Tech bases their entire season on the Granite City Classic since they don't expect to have any post-season success. I don't mean to belittle them for this, or say it as sarcasm, I say it based upon past history and experience in St. Cloud hockey.
When Tech finally adds SCH to it's schedule, then we'll know. (Remember that the ADs agreed to this a few years back, but the Tech coach refused to play Cathedral in any other format than the GCC.)
Almost every hockey program bases it's level of success on these things:
Conference Play.
Tournament Play during season.
Post-Season Section Play.
State Tournament Appearances.
Player Success post-high school. (D1, D3, Professional)
I have no desire to go into each item for all of these teams, but it's a solid way to measure the program success. And you will see that success can come in cycles for any school. (Apollo is a perfect example of that.)
Good luck to all the area teams!

No, we won't really know. Tech beat Cathedral in the Granite City Classic three out of the last four years I believe. It wouldn't matter a whit if they played another one game during the regular season and why should it? If we take those past games, if Tech beat them twice out of two games, do we then say Tech is the best team hands down? If they split, are they even? Again, one or two games means nothing. Now, seven games or 10 or 14 might.
And besides, really, who cares? Sure, the section may be down, but Tech competed and played Roseau very tough twice last year, and Roseau was a better team than almost any team CHS played all of last year. What's it prove? Other than Tech played really good in those games. To read more into games like that, whether against quality opponents or not attributes more than really might be there. We all know hard work and proper practice can beat talent. Maybe one team played harder than the other despite the skill level.
My point earlier was we read too much into all of this stuff. Bus legs, number of games, injuries, lucky bounces, -- whatever. The variables are too many to list and sometimes things just happen that defy all expectations (1980 Olympic team). It doesn't prove anything outside of THAT PARTICULAR game under those particular circumstances.
So let's all just enjoy the games, hope for success for St. Cloud teams (for those who live here) and be glad that we get to watch high school hockey. Won't mean diddley in 10 years anyway.

I wasn't trying to use "bus legs" as an excuse, I was stating that Warroad looked slow against Cathedral, compared to seeing them play in the past. After watching the Tech game, Warroad looked about the same.
Warroad is a very skilled, and hard-working team, Cathedral played their hearts out for the win. Congrats

When hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there too.

i hope no one is dilutional and thinks Tech beat Cathedral this year...they tied...just to be clear....When it comes down to it, with playing some of the same teams on both schedules, we will see that Cathedral is the better team...the person who wrote how Tech bases there pathetic season on the Granite City Classic hit the nail on the head....the section is down this year..i would love to see another st. cloud team int he state tourney, especially the AA tourney..but i dont think tech has it in them. cathedral has truly assembled the most respectable team and program in st. cloud over the years. a classy and successful program...they have churned out plenty players to play after highschool too.

I dont think Tech bases its season on the gcc. Although they have won it the past 2 years it is obvious its simply a fluke. I mean Cathedral is by and large the better team so they should have won the tournament. If cathedral is so holy why do they have soo much trouble with Tech? If they could prove it with a win over Tech it would settle people down. Too bad its been a fluke game the last 2 years.
Bow down to Nate Shmidt and 30 hail marrys and it will all be ok.

If you are looking for stats on the GCC or any of the area hockey teams, this website has the scoresheets from rinkside on their website. They also do up to date scoring on most games being played.
http://www.rinkwriter.com/08-09Games.htm
It also has the recent history of the GCC. And Tech has won the last two, Cathedral the one previous to those two. They also have the JV results on there as well.
Here are the breakdowns for the GCC 2006-present.....
