I remember precious few years ago when people on here were bad-mouting Blake Wheeler and TJ Oshie ("overrated"); I wonder where those two are now?
I'm not saying this kid is Blake Wheeler. What I am saying is that scouts and coaches at SCSU have significantly more hockey knowledge and scouting acumen than anyone sitting and spouting off on an anonymous message board. If they didn't think he was "DI material", like all you experts ponder, then I wonder why they would recruit him? Obviously they see something in him, eh?
Not every D1 recruit turns out how they wanted him to.
I think no one, including myself, can make a fair or accurate prediction about this kid until he logs some time in the juniors. St. Francis' schedule is a joke.
But enough of the bleakness, congrats kid. Regardless of the outcome it's still a big accomplishment.

Well that wasn't me. Blake Wheeler was the best Class A player I've ever seen and T.J. Oshie was not far behind. They obviously see something in him, it's just going to be strange seeing a kid from St. Francis playing D1 hockey.
Andy Benik is a solid goaltender and that could be a possibility but Belisle is...I'm sorry...awful. He looked like a B2 bantam when I saw him against Spring Lake Park...Benik just sets the kid up but he is definantly not D1
They fair pretty well in conference, I agree though their non conference schedule is cake. Belisle is already getting looks and people were expecting Andy Benik to get offered before Joey.
Congrats to Joey. Ive only seen him play a couple of times and he has some scoring touch in that league, but that doesnt mean scsu is expecting hiim to score. They might expect a different role from him and that is why they recruited him. Not every great goal scorer is a scorer in college.
The kid will get his chance to sink or swim against higher competition. Pretty tough to laud him at this stage when he hasn't really proven much against good competition. But he'll get his chance.
Congrates to the man but i don't think he will do a thing in D1 hockey. just watch him play. And Andy and belise have no chance playing D1 once Joey leaves Belise will do nada. And i have seen joey play and im not from St. Francis... in fact i hate them but when we beat St. Francis all we had to do was put a guy on him and ride him around the rink... so he has no help but still not D1 caliber
Actually i don't think Motzko is taking that big of a leap by taking him.Do you? he doesn't have to play him. and if joey is as good as some think, i think he should go to a school with a better reputaion.
no, you're right. he doesn't have to play him. i think the only thing joey has to do is prove himself against better competition. i guess time will tell

yeah the lost to cambridge because they had one guy shadow him the whole night and he didnt do anything, theres no way this kid will do anything in the wcha
If you shadow Benik you will shut him down and thus shut St. Francis down. All he does is chill around in the neutral zone and wait for the puck to be thrown out of the zone to him.
Anyone that thinks this team is going to make a run in the playoffs is nuts.
Motzko probably doesn't even know where St. francis is located. I think this thread will have to be re-discussed in a few years after he plays juniors and freshman year at St. Cloud. I am never going to rip a kid on here, but I am just not sold on him. I think there are other players out there just as good, or even better, that wont get the same opportunity.
Do you think that he's been promised anything real as far as a scholarship goes? It's easy to commit early as nothing is in writing until the LOI's are signed. He may be a "recruited walk-on"? It's the players that are getting the 75% and higher schollies that are going to recruited heavier. Even they don't always plan out such as the kid from Stillwater (Keifer) that was going to be such a big player for SCSU but bombed in the USHL and went up to the WHL.
Congrats to you Joey, you all got to remember these are just kids playing a high school sport, it is just a game. a if the kid was dedicated enough he got what was his. more power to him, maybe he will do good ,maybe not. but he got there.
This is a stretch for Motzko... I mean, St. Francis barely got by Proctor last year when I watched them and I dont think Benik had a point... so unless he's gotten twice as good as last year, I still dont think it was a good move on Motzko's part. But congrats anyways, D-1 is a big accomplishment.
Regardless of schedule it takes a lot of skill to put up totals like he has. Obviously he wouldn't have as many points with a tougher schedule, but still impresive. Good luck to him in future.
I was able to see Joey play for the first time yesterday and was pretty disappointed. I was expecting him to actually control the play, carry the puck, go in the corners, take the body on someone, and go below the top of the circles in his own zone. I was suprised on how average his skating was. I figured going into it that he would dominate aginst Irondale and that was not the case. Irondale could have won by 7 or 8 goals. Not trying to hack on the kid, but don't know how SCSU can offer this kid something before he plays in the USHL. Don't get me wrong, that is a ton of points, but just don't see it. Anyone know how much of an offer he got? Was it 80% or 30%? That would make a big difference. Congrats to him, hopefully he just didn't play well. If I didn't have a program, I wouldn't have known he he was. Life in the WCHA will be a little different.
I know joey has commited to SCSU, but it is never official until you sign the piece of paper. We will see how he does in jrs. I honestly think he will be back for his sr year unless he hooks on with an nahl team. I wish him the best.
