Second info from a buddy who was at the Hopkins-Tonka game. Here are a few details:
very poorly refereed game as there were 16 penalites which according to my math means the fans watched someone's powerplay for 60% of the game. accordng to score sheet 7 slashing, 4 hooking and 2 high stick.... ugllllyyy... Tonka got called for 9 of them (7 for Hopkins) and were in the box for half the second period. Tonka couldn't get even strength enough to get momentum rolling and their powerplay line was unsuccessful whereas both the Hopkins goals were on their powerplaying first line. When Tonka was even strength they dominated due to their depth but with a weak Tonka powerplay (very few shots) and 9 penalties against Tonka, Hopkins unknowlingly figured out how to crack the Tonka powerhouse. My buddy did not believe Hopkins would win an even strength contest against Tonka even with the FONS. The Hopkins goaltender was awesome (FONS) again. The ususally reserved Tonka coach was very pissed by the end of the second period with frustration for the ref calls as Tonka spent 8 minutes in box short handed. Both Hopkins goals were PP goals from Hopkin's first line with the gamewinner being in OT. Tonka started OT shorthanded as the ref called a penalty on them in the last second of regulation. Fans were frustrated because the refs appeared quite inexperienced and lost control of game early by calling many questionable fouls on both sides and disrupted the game which appeared to help Hopkins slip by Tonka. The game never got going and ended ugly with bad penalty calles flowing nonstop. Minnetonka was again shorthanded in all but 90 seconds of overtime which really frustrated Tonka coaches and fans and kids. FONS played a very strong game and the Hopkins defense played well tonight. All of the Hopkins offense was their first line which due to the penalty situation played most of the game. The disruption and some smart timeouts called by the Hopkins coach gave the first line the rest they needed to stay on the ice more than half game. It appears that until Tonka fixes their powerplay (one of the worst in the state according to PS) it looks like a high penalty game is a way to beat the very strong and deep Tonka team...

Was at Hopkins/Tonka game. Agree that officiating was a bit shaky, but Hopkins was the better team and had the better scoring chances. Tonka goalie and Fons both played awesome. Good back and forth scoring chances all game. First time I've seen Hopkins out-play a top team. Should be a great section tournament.

School dance tonight.bananastick wrote:Edina was simply too much for Wayzata. The Trojans pulled Simcoe after the first period, no idea why. Nothing went right for Wayzata, too many missed passes, power play was ineffective and several kids have been battling the flu all week. Edina looked very good.karl(east) wrote:Some important games this afternoon with finals from followthepuck.com:
Edina 7

Nice little bounceback for the Hornets. Any details on this one?
Also...
Hopkins 2
Minnetonka 1 (OT)
A surprise here. Details?
Oddly enough the Edina student section was almost empty.
