From what I saw at Junior Fest, I thought there were a number of players that were better overall players, not just scorers, than some of the names you have listed and who we have heard about the last three or four years. I believe once your name gets out there as a top player it stays whether you continue to improve or not. I only saw one or two that totally stood out and the rest were pretty equal.

Is there an award for the top defensive player? It seems like there really should be some way to honor the top HS defensive player.

Not that I'm aware of, and I tend to agree regarding there should be a recognition for a D player specifically.

There have been so many D that would have been excellent picks as Ms. Hockey and were extremely deserving. It's obvious they're at a disadvantage against an always strong group of forwards. I don't think 2010 will be any different in that respect. I won't mention a player by name, but there is at least one D that should get very serious consideration in 2010...in my opinion. Even among what is a strong class at forward.

It does seem without that specific award, many fine defenders will lose out, or not get the recognition they deserve. Not to imply that any former Ms. Hockey was not completely deserving...but I think it's time for a defender specific recognition.

Great idea on a D Award.....your points are true although I think Brodt the first and Wendell both won as D though may have also led big time in scoring. They would fit the mold of what coaches now call Hybrid player someone who is in the D position but is up ice in the attack a lot.

Rose Alleva is probably this classes best example of that but will have to compete with a very strong forward class. Past finalists for Ms. Hockey at D Kelsay Romatowski in '09 or Kelly Wild '08 are good examples of great players who did not win the Ms. Hockey Award. I guess with a D award the question might then shift to are they the best D or the best attacking/scoring D....

Nice to see people recognizing and supporting the idea of a D award and I agree would be great.

I would think that Rose would need to play more higher caliber teams to be nominated, I think she would be hurt by the fact that her team plays some weak teams could be detramental . but she is a good 2 way player because she gets lots of chances.

You might be right.....How does it go if I were a betting man.....I think she will and the teams Red Wing plays might be similar to Romatoski at AHA this past season though at year end AHA is AA and RW only A....Alleva doesn't get the Metro limelight but also is a bit legendary playing out state as some haven't seen her play.

She had to impress anyone watching the state tournament...probably many of whom had not seen her play before that. If she failed to impress during those games...people obviously weren't paying attention.

The Minnesota Girl's High School Coaches Association has a slightly different perspective. They picked the following Juniors as "All-State" selections:

Class A
Brook Story Warroad F
Rose Alleva Red Wing D
Amanda Monkman Roseau D

Class AA
Bethany Brausen Roseville F
Kayla Capistrant Roseville F
Cara Johnson Hopkins F
Allie Duellmann Roseville D
Chelsea Witwicke Roseville D
Kallie Billadeau Hopkins G

From the above, it appears that Roseville may be the team to beat next season and has the lead on Ms. Hockey for next season.

The following Juniors were picked as Honorable Mention.

Class A
Michelle Anez Alexandria F
Andrea Foss Blake D
Lexy Wangen Crookston D

Class AA
Corinne Buie Edina F
Dana Gallop GRG F
Julia Gilbert PHM F
Gina McDonald Irondale F
Ashley Stenerson Moorhead F
Katie Erickson Elk River D
Ellie Gleason Edina D
Christina LaCombe Eden Prairie D

Note that only one goalie from the Junior class was named as either All-State or All-State Honorable Mention.

I like the coach's association list.

Except for Gina McDonald as only an Honorable Mention? How does that happen ? She belongs on the top list IMHO

Agree.......as I posted a few weeks ago, I believe that the teams to beat are Roseville and Edina. There are other strong teams, of course, but these two stick out in my mind.

Agree on these two but I think EP could be a dark horse.

Stillwater will be a factor again as they return last years very strong junior class. I also think they have a couple players that were not put your list that are top 10 caliber.

Joe,

I think you forgot one D unless you were only doing Jr. Whitcaps or Ice Cats.

Good add wasn't on the list I pulled and there are probably others. The list showed the girls committed to D1 so far - I missed Miller becuase she was a late commitment compared to the list many who were committed last spring or summer and signed National Letters of Intent in November. Of the list the two girls from Roseau plus Miller don't play for the two summer teams (there are other Ice Cats and White Caps not yet committed).
