They tried that in basketball in the 70s for a few years. They played it on Monday night. It bombed miserably. Of course that was a different time and a different sport, Back then, basketball was outdrawing hockey, or at least drawing about the same.b-rad wrote:I doubt the 1 class 16 team will ever get a chance, although id like to see it tried. How about the A champ playing the AA champ? I wonder if the MSHSL has thought about trying that?

They're closing Central, adding on to Denfeld, and moving East to a new location (the Ordean MS site, if you're familiar with Duluth schools). The plan has been very controversial, but everything seems to be moving forward as planned, and they expect to be in the 2 new schools by 2011-12. They still haven't really decided if they're keeping the names of the existing schools, but I think that's looking rather likely, since Denfeld will throw a fit if they don't, and East will want equal treatment. It would also be a bit cheaper, since they wouldn't have to bother with new uniforms, etc.b-rad wrote:Hey Karl whats up with the Duluth school consolidation?
I also quickly searched "Red Plan" (the name of the school project) on here and found someone who posted that they had confirmation that Denfeld and Central will be co-oping for hockey as soon as next year. I cannot confirm this, though.
The bottom line for hockey is that Duluth will have two AA schools, as both East and Denfeld will be forced over the enrollment bar. They're splitting the Central students up more or less evenly, and with the state of Central hockey, I don't think much will change otherwise. They'll both probably add a little depth, but that's it.
didn't they do a sweet 16 single class basketball tournement in the 1990's too that was pretty successful?? I don't think there would be a heckuva lot of backlash if they changed over the hockey tournement.hockeydad wrote:They tried that in basketball in the 70s for a few years. If class A teams and their fans want them to compete with Class AA teams at state they should have to run the AA section gauntlet. Getting a free pass to state against A competition is not a good idea when a team like Edina or Jefferson is at home.b-rad wrote:Thanks for the info Karl. I remember the sweet sixteen b-ball tournament, i liked it alot. How about a sweet sixteen tournament with 8 A and 8 AA teams, you wouldnt have to completely overhaul the sections then.
