East

The kid is probably a very good player but 12 points is a long way from "tearing it up". Pretty sure Randolph would expect more too. :o

Rankings

Post by nipe 6 »

Hasn't been talk about this section for a while. Usually its a pretty hot topic. I'll take a crack at the rankings now with a few games played.

1. Duluth East- easily number one. However, only a 6-3 game against Princeton??? hmm...Would be a different story in the playoffs though.

2. Elk River- Has not played tough competition yet. But a win over andover puts them here. We will get a better idea of how good they really are after this week playing Eden Prairie, Edina, and Grand Rapids.

3. Andover- I could see them fall anywhere between 1 thru 5. I'll put them here for now to be safe and wait to see how good this senior class really is. Strength of scedule doesn't pick up until conference play does in about another month.

4. Forest Lake- Win over Grand Rapids and a nice win over Roseville earns them this spot. I'm hoping they will match up with Andover in their christmas tourney later in the month.

5. Grand Rapids- Commanding win over Cloquet. Along with Elk River, they too will play against Eden Prairie and Edina this week and then cap off the 3 consecutive game weekend against Elk River. Will get a better idea after this week.

6. St. Francis- Face it, like him or not, Benik is good. His brother is very underrated as well in goal. Could MAYBE pull off an upset in playoffs with those 2 leading the team.

7. Princeton- I am giving the slightest edge over Cloquet. As you can see I think st francis ahead of Cloquet so for these 2 teams playing in a tie i give the nod to Princeton. Also, only a 6-3 loss to East. When East and Cloquet throw down this week I think it will be much more lopsided then that.

8. Cloquet- Just to much to prove this year going from winning the section one year to being brutal the next. Match up with East and Cambridge this week which could make or break them in this section.

9. Cambridge- Actually a fairly strong lost place team comopared to other sections. Very good goalie and a couple of players that can play. Have Cloquet this week, then play Andover to start off the Christmas tourney, then could eventually match up with Forest Lake that same weekend.

Keep your eye on Forest Lake. Nobody told all those sophs that F.L. was a wrestling town. They work hard. Great senior leadership even though only 4 on team.

I don't know if I would say Duluth easily. East beat Anoka 5-2. Elk River beat Anoka 8-1. East squeezed by Maple Grove, who is down this year, beat Princeton 6-3 a bottom 7AA team.

Elk River scrimmaged East in Duluth. ER 2 DE 0. I think East is down this year and Elk River is going to quietly move into the elite teams this year. Lot of scoring up front and on the Blueline. Returning goalie. This weekend in Edina will show what kind of team the Elks are this year.

My early pick for section 7AA:

1. Elk River
2. Andover
3. East
4. Forest Lake
5. Grand Rapids
6. Cloquet
7. Cambridge
8. St. Francis
9. Princeton

While I do agree that ER is #1 in the section at this point, I'd caution against assuming East is that far down. They're not scoring at the rate of other top teams, but they very nearly beat Wayzata and also handled WBL pretty well. They're also very thin at the moment; 3 defensemen are out right now, and the backup goalie started the Princeton game. It's a very inexperienced team, but there's an awful lot of talent out there.

First of all, Karl you do fantastic job of the rankings for not seeing any games. I enjoy reading your takes on the teams. Thank you.

I never said they were down that far, if you think third is far. One advantage I have, is that I've seen East four times this year and Andover twice. I just think Andover is better, they have 16 seniors and Cal Decowski.

I don't have the records for anything further back in history, but East has never been lower that a 2 seed over the past 10 years. So I guess it would be pretty far down by our standards. :D

I definitely trust your judgment when you say Andover is good, but I guess I just haven't bought into all the hype yet. Probably because this Andover class has been getting a fair amount of it, but they have yet to manage a win of any serious significance. The first game against ER didn't do much to help their cause in my eyes, unless ER really is that good (which is possible, I suppose).

I'm interested to see how they do against Osseo next week. Unfortunately they don't play a very hard schedule so it'll be tough to measure them for a while.

I suppose now that I think about it, East is not easily the favorite. I still give them the benefit of the doubt and give them the number one seed as of now. Someone has to knock them off the top seed , which I dont think has happened yet. They only have one loss to a decent Wayzata team, and with Elk Rivers schedule not being to challenging yet I have them at number 2. Don't get me wrong Elk River may be better, but they have to prove it rather then being judged by potentional. The season is still young though and it will all unfold during the season.

The East schedule becomes considerably more difficult between now and the end of the year. Results in the next three weeks will surely demonstrate what kind of team the Greyhounds really are this year.

Starts with Centennial tonight.

Cambridge- 3
Cloquet- 1

Puts Cloquet to dead last in the section in my book. Wasn't Cloquet suppose to be a little better this year?
