7A Next Year??? Denfeld Trojans??

The way I understand it Karl, is that East and Denfeld will stay once everything is done. Next year whoever it will still be the Denfeld Trojans/ Central Hunters.

Okay, that makes sense.

While I wasn't religiously attached to the current name and feel for the Central kids a bit, coming back and rooting for "Duluth Ordean" or something like that probably just wouldn't have felt the same.

I just couldn't (and neither could the Duluth School Board) come envision a plan which would satisfy everybody. They could have dropped all three nicknames and irritated the vast majority of Duluthians, or done what they actually did.

I feel for Central, their grads, and their plight, especially considering Central was the first high school in Duluth. But what they're going through isn't unique. Check out what has happened in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Worse there.

Yeah, from what I heard/observed, as soon as new names became a serious option, the reaction at Denfeld and East was pretty swift and negative. While I think it was overkill to some degree, it also would've been overkill for those wanting a new name to stand up and make a big deal out of it.

Tradition is a funny thing. But the best thing for everyone to do is move on and focus on the more pressing issues with this transition. A few years from now the kids who would have gone to Central won't care about any of this and will be completely loyal to their new schools. Life moves on.

Thank God it stayed the same, like someone else said, it only removes one schools mascot not three.

Right now there are currently 3071 high school students in the Duluth School District. If they divided them evenly, there would be about 1600 per school. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that there are many students who come from very far away, who are much closer to Proctor, Two harbors and other close schools. So, if the powers that be are smart, they would decrease the Duluth School District zone. So anything is possible.

That is the case, yes--the school board voted on it the other night. And the district will likely lose a few students to other places, yes.

Also, for athletics purposes, there's also a free/reduced lunch adjustment, so the enrollment used for section classification will be lower than the real number.

I would've supported the single school option...just think of that hockey team.
