You already have your mind made up. Sure, Breck is very solid up front, but so is Tonka, but what puts Tonka above everyone else is arguably one of the best defensive units we have ever soon. Move up to AA, or schedule these big AA schools if you want to make a case for being the best team in the state.
why is everyone on the tonka bandwagon? they have alot of talent and having three D1 players on their defense is impressive to say the least. but to be honest, HM was the better team. they were lucky to win that one in OT. i think it's a myth to say that just because these schools are class A they would be "killed" by the Tonka's or Edina's of the world. that's just completely false. I just don't think it's impossible to consider that some years there will be A schools that have the talent to be the best in the state. AA backers automatically assume that can not be possible.
Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. For the vast majority of the season, Minnetonka has been the best team in the state. Last night they added luck to the arsenal.
They did what they had to do to win. Yes, Krueger made some nice stops but last time I checked your goalies play is part of your teams play. HM had a good plan to slow tonkas forwards and offensive d down and it worked, almost. Why were they so lucky? Because a goalie who has a 93 or 94 percent save percentage made some really nice saves? I didn't see any homer calls by the officials in tonkas favor or any crazy bounces off the end boards to a wide open player. It wasn't like HM had a shooting gallery on Krueger for 6 periods of play.
Why are people on tonkas bandwagon? It might have something to do with one loss all season to the team that happen to face in today. They were undefeated 21 games into the season while beating some teams like East, Edina, STA, Moorhead, Holy Angels, and others by 3 or 4 goals on a regular basis. Tonka is in the toughest section bar none and they handled everyone they faced. They're conference is small but the toughest in the state, they finished 2nd and Edina 3rd out of five teams. Individually, They have the most D1 guys committed so far. Two Mr Hockey finalists. Holl and Gardiner could go in the first 3 rounds which would give them 3 players taken in the first 3 rounds of the NHL draft.
Just a hunch why some people like them.

Yet. . . . HM looked like the better team. It's the best "team", not the team with the most D1 commits .
And it's the team that scores 2 not the team that scores 1 that moves on.
i thought your breck team beat SSM? Now I see they lost 4-1. Well Holy Angels played them a lot closer, 5-4, and they struggled against quite a few AA teams this yr. BSM was not that great and played them 4-2 and you're basing your argument on a 4-1 meaningless, non-conference, non-mshsl loss?
Well i don't know much about Breck but if they have people from all over the metro playing for them and have an enrollment of 400 and say that's there argument for staying A what about Roseau? They have a similar enrollment, but people just from one city, and they compete with the big boys. Now after just watching them get a lucky victory over Hermantown they did not look all that great. Hill, Edina, Tonka, Blaine, EP, Wayzata, Holy Angels, Roseau, possibly Duluth East, could all beat the Breck team I saw today. With Hill, Edina, and Tonka winning easily. The only reason why Breck's speed and skill looks so much better is that A tends to be a game with a little less speed and depth. AA powerhouses have three to 4 lines that could skate with all of Breck's line with the exception of the first line, but the depth of AA schools is what makes AA usually have the better teams. I would like to see Breck start to schedule the bigger powerhouse AA teams continuously and then when they have a team like this years they will have an argument if they are the best team in the state
Ah no, what game did you watch today. Hermantown out played them. Breck won on a garbage goal. That's hockey. Don't get me wrong, Breck played a good game, but Hermantown was the better team. Privates, Find your own tourney or go to AA.
Take the finally four from each tournament and anyone of those teams could win the State Tournament if it was combined..
You AA lovers i bet never even watched a game for the single A tournament. Could Breck beat Edina or Tonka, we will never know!! They would be hard fought tight games!! Comparing scores is for people that have no clue how else to evaluate a team.
Bring back the one class system. Make it 16 teams and give the smaller schools a shot at making it too the dance. Seriously does it really matter if Breck or Edina beats New Ulm 11-1. No difference.

No question. I came from Illinois that had one of the best basketball tourneys, But that doesn't hold a stitch to what we have here in the great state of Minnesota. Lets' make it the best High School Tournament in the nation again and go to a single class, then there's no question who's the best team in High School Hockey Nationally.
bronco, moose, you both are correct - Breck needs to play with the big schools, they have awesome talent and great leadership among the players- That team showed in some cases coaching does not matter - Hermantown was the better team
I'm old school Section 8, so I do think winning the section tourney should be priority #1.
All 8 section winners in State Tourney seeded 1-8.
All the section runner-ups host a 1 game play-in. ALL the rest of the teams that didn't make the section finals get ranked... the top 8 and section does not matter, you could have more than 1 team or no team from each section go and play 1 game to get in the State Tourney.
I don't know much about other sections but section 8 and section 7 from up North would have great section championships, great 1 game play-in games and very competitive teams sent down to State!!
Small school, large school, private school = 1 Champ

Hey big talker, they did play each other last year in Moorhead .....It was a scrimmage and Breck beat the mighty Skippers 4-2. Don't you think if they were so much better they would have blown them away. The class they play in has nothing to do with how good a team is.
Breck has and can skate with any team in the state this year.

Hermantown may have played a better game, but I's stop short of saying they are a better team. Hats off to the Hawks.

Breck tried to get out of playing their Tri Metro conference opponents twice only to be voted down by all the other schools in the conference. Then they went out and filled their two open dates with Shattuck and Cathedral..Hardly pushovers.. It's hard for teams like Breck to get the big boys to play them as their schedules are already pretty full with conference games and to be honest, there isn't a lot of upside for them to play strong single A schools like Breck and STA as they have more to lose than gain.
The answer here is simple and its been said here repeatedly......GO BACK TO A SINGLE CLASS SYSTEM AND MAKE IT 16 TEAMS.
woodley wrote:Not even a question for consideration. . . many of the other powerhouse private schools have chosen to play AA. To have the benefits of choosing who you (cough, cough) enroll, and then playing A and debating if the school has the best team is ridiculous. .
Breck is smart in staying in class A. They have an enrollment of 400 kids. Benilde, Holy Angels, these schools are over twice the size of Breck. Breck's gonna have good years, average and down years in hockey . It would be stupid to move to AA just because they are having an incredible 2 year run at the moment. That is why an argument can be made for this current team as being the best in the state. Sometimes a team comes along that is full of seniors and very talented. That is what this team is. It's not ridiculous to debate whether they could be the best.
I am NOT a fan of the private schools at all, but I agree with those two statements. Just because a high school team is having a good run doesnt mean they should move up. Its high school, and good players/ teams come and go. It isnt a simple process to change classes, and in years to come when Breck isnt nearly as good, they would really be screwed if they were playing AA. I dont know exact numbers of the AA schools, but other than roseau, what other schools have less than 500 kids and consistently put out a good team year after year?

Exactly. I played for a certain private school and I know we always tried to get those teams on our schedule. Usually a scrimmage was the best they would give us. We used to trek up to Warroad and Roseau pre season just to get some good games and I know that there have been scrimmages against good AA teams lately. No one wanted to put on one that counted.
Breck should not have to play AA. They simply could not sustain a good AA team every year so they should not be forced to play there. Breck has a little over 400 kids and despite what everybody thinks their admissions process is primarily based on academics not hockey skill. The probable fact is, is that Breck will never be quite this good again, they were remarkable this year and would probably give the AA schools a game. But to say that they have to move to AA is riduclous. They are a class A powerhouse and there in my opinion there is nothing wrong with that.

Class A is a JV tournament
Go work on your hair buddy!! The Final Four teams in the A tournament were as a good as the final four in the AA tournament.
you obviously have no hockey integrity whatsoever, edina would beat breck 5 to 0. i know cuz i personally have played against multiple players from both teams, edina jv would be more suitable for breck to play. it's just fact if you watch the games it is obvious which class is better

okay first off that was a scrimage so who knows tonka could have put their jv team out on the ice to get some ice. also tonka probably wasnt playing as hard as breck was (in scrimages the team that is obviously the underdog usually plays much harder than the favorite). lastly i would like to point out that that WAS LAST YEAR AND WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS YEAR IDIOT!!!! last i checked tonka wasn't even in the state tourney last year. if breck was so good they would move to aa but they know they arent so they are not gonna. no matter what people say this breck team was recruited from all around the metro area, maybe we should put the minnesota wild in the class a tournament because they only have about 40 players to pick their nhl roster from (ahl and nhl team)..... there you go 'big talker'
