I don't know what MSHSL's policy on this is, but if it were me I would contact the school(s) you are interested in and ask them directly. I suspect they will tell you that your kid needs to be enrolled at their school for the current school year in order to be eligible to play for one of their athletic teams. Of course some private schools host 7th and 8th grades while others also have elementary grades 1-6. Each would have their own policy on this, but I believe you will find that no matter what their minimum grade is your kid would actually have to be enrolled at the school in question.

Girls going to Private Schools

Post by bghockey »

Girls are eligible for MSHSL activities/athletics once they enter 7th grade. They are eligible for as many years as they have remaining in school, ( ex. 6 for 7th graders, 4 years for freshmen ). Schools can have their own policies regarding what grade levels can try out and play for their school. Also, youth associations may want input on U12 and U14 aged girls not being rushed up to the high school program. They must go to school in the district they live in or attend. The exception is for girls who transfer from school A to school B after 9th grade. They can either play JV for one year or continue to play at school A for a year.

What about my kid goes to private catholic Jr High in Lakeville with no private catholic High School. Could my kid play at say Holy Angels, Holy Family (no Jr High) in 8th grade while still living in Lakeville or would we have to move to Richfield or Victoria to be eligible?

Again, all assuming we are enrolled at the High School for 9th grade and they allow.

From the MSHSL Handbook:
BYLAW 105.00 GRADE LEVEL ELIGIBILITY
Cross Reference: Bylaw 302 (Cities of the First Class), Bylaw 109 (Seasons of Participation) and Bylaw 303.4 (Junior High School Bylaws)

Participation in League-sponsored programs is limited to students in grades 7 through 12. Students in grade 7, 8, and 9 may participate only if they are enrolled in a continuation school for that high school.

Elementary students in grades K-6 are not eligible to participate in any League activities.

Definitions:
1. A Continuation School is one that is under the same administrative head and governing board.
2. A student in grades 7, 8, or 9, who attends a school under a separate administrative head and governing board; which does not have a continuation high school; and where no other opportunity for participation on a high school team exists; is eligible to participate for a public high school team provided the public high school and the non-continuation school have established a joint agreement for participation in League Activities. The non-continuation school must be located in the public high school district as defined below.
3. Public high school district: The term “High School District" shall refer to the territory assigned to a specific high school by a Board of Education and shall not refer to a school system except in cases in which only one high school exists in a school system.

Based on the above bylaw and definitions, I would say no - she couldn't play for one of those private schools' high school teams - as it's my understanding that the private Jr High in Lakeville would not be considered a "continuation school" (i.e. separate administrative head and governing board) for one of the private high schools you've mentioned. I don't think it would make any difference even if she enrolled for 9th grade at one of those high schools sometime during the 8th grade year, and I don't think it matters where the student lives. However, based on definition #2, it appears that she could play for a high school team for the public high school where the private Jr High is located, assuming the schools have a "joint agreement" in place.

This is my interpretation anyway. You may want to check into it further with the schools in question and/or the MSHSL.

I see there is at least 1 kid or 2 on the Girls Holy Family Girls High School Rosters who are in 8th Grade. I wonder what there situation is?

Holy Family has a co-op with Waconia High School for Girls Hockey. I'm guessing these 8th graders probably attend Jr High/Middle School in Waconia.

I know the answer to this

#1. BSM has a jr high 7-8th and all 7-12 ths there can try out for any HS sport. In addition...if you go to a classified K-8 Feeder school, BSM has the list, and they are all private catholic K-8 schools...you are also eligible. Living in Bloomington (or St. Louis Park for that matter) and going to the local Jr High? you are not eligible, period. All private schools either have a specific feeder list (same as local public schools) or they don't. Check with each private school. It is the same rules at public school...jr high x feeds into HS Y...if the coach allows 7-8ths to try out for varsity, then they do...some do some don't.

I had one kid graduate from Chaska High School and one who attends BSM. Both played (Play) sports. I am certain about the rule here. Also, anyone can go anywhere they want Free agency first day of 9th grade (or first day fo fall practices preceeding 9th grade) if the school accepts them, regardless of where they live...after that, you have to move or sit out. So choose wisely!!!!

So are you saying that a Catholic K-8 feeder school is considered a "Continuation School" of a nearby (but separate) Catholic high school for the purposes of this rule?

I wouldn't be shocked if it's treated this way in practice by the MSHSL, but strictly reading the rule I wouldn't think that the Catholic K-8 school and the Catholic high school would usually have the "same administrative head and governing board" (which is supposed to be a requirement of a Continuation School).

I wonder what happens in a situation where a Catholic K-8 school feeds kids into multiple Catholic high schools. Could 7th & 8th graders in the K-8 school tryout/play for ANY of these Catholic high schools' sports teams (assuming the high school allows 7th & 8th graders to play) - as long as the K-8 school is "classified" as a feeder school by the high school where the kid is playing? That seems to give the private high schools a lot of control/flexibility to define their own "feeder school list" as they wish...but again I wouldn't be shocked if that's how it's currently treated by the MSHSL. Or perhaps the MSHSL doesn't really enforce this rule strictly anyway since we're just talking about 7th & 8th graders here....

I believe the rule was updated in the early 2000's (it may have even been updated the same year as the transfer rule), and most K-8 "feeder" schools were assigned a "Continuation School". These typically fall along city boundaries (i.e. AHA is in richfield, any 7-8 grade private school in the richfield city limits is a feeder school for AHA). Which means some "feeder" schools have no continuation school (ie SACS in Shakopee) the only option for those kids until 9th grade is to play for Shakopee HS or youth hockey. Prior to that any kid in a Catholic "feeder" school could tryout for a private HS, but the parents had to provide transportation.

Thanks for the info, allhoc. That's good to know....

Is a school such as Waconia a feeder into more then 1 high school such as: Holy Family and the Public High School?

Are you asking if the Waconia public school system feeds into both Waconia High School and Holy Family Catholic High School? (in the context of the "feeder school/Continuation School" discussion above)

Yes that's part of question-specifically Waconia? The follow up would be are other small private schools usually Catholic K-8 feeders into both private and public high schools? For example the catholic school in Richfield is a feeder into Holy Angels, I assume it's a feeder into Richfield HS?
