Thank you for the clarification, HShockeywatcher. STA could have probably given Delbarton a better game than Breck back in Jan. 2008, when the New Jersey boys last came out. That season, STA finished 26-5 and won the Class A title. Their losses that season were to twice to Hill-Murray (4-2 and 4-3), to Minnetonka (5-2), to Duluth Marshall (8-2) and to Breck (6-5). Breck finished 16-11-1 that year, losing to arch-nemesis Blake in the section final.

Little confused about some of the dates people are giving. I don't know the ages/players/etc but Breck was really good, well good enough to win the title with the best team not at state, the last two years coming away with 5 losses in those two years; x2 to STA, x1 to SSM, x1 to Mahtomedi and x1 to Wayzata. St Thomas beat Breck 7-2 and 4-3 in those years. Breck lost to Shattuck last year 1-4.

Delbarton, though, played Breck THREE years ago in a year they didn't go to state. They lost to Delbarton that year 2-5 and beat St Thomas 6-5 that year.

All this is really hard to compare. Delbarton beat Breck 5-2 when Breck beat St Thomas 6-5 and the Cadets won state. When Breck was "best" they lost to St Thomas and Shattuck. Now both MSHSL teams are down and they play again.

Will prob be good hockey but I suspect Breck will lose, Shattuck will win all their games and the game tonight will be competitive.

Hockeywatch: They do it football, baseball, probly softball, basketball, wrestling, ...what the heck??? give it a go,... all I see as a problem is: The best competition is right here in the back yard.

I'm not at all saying I wouldn't love it.

Most (I know, not all) of those games are on ESPN. It would be great if someone organized a national hockey championship like they do in basketball.

If that's not the reason, why doesn't it happen?

Really not all that impressed with Delbarton for being the "best team in NJ." They are good, rolling with St Thomas, outshooting the Cadets, but nothing that amazing.

I believe STA chose to take the penalty vs the penalty shot. A miss would have given Delbarton a 6 on 4 for 40 more seconds.

STA did enough to win, but did not score in second or third period.

I stand humbled. I overestimated Delbarton and underestimated our private school boys (although SSM is really more of a magnet hockey school). Now watch, I'll end up 0 for 3 in my prognostication, as a "reloading" Breck team sweeps them in a game at High Noon tomorrow (Jan. 17). I guess those Jersey Boys can sing and throw a few punches, but can't match up to our best Class A teams.

Well the "best team in NJ" just lost to probably the 10th or 15th best team in Minnesota. I think we sound elitist because, well, we have the most elite hockey in this state.

Sta is not a 15th ranked team in the state. They have greatly improved and are a different team then they were. They will most likely win the class A state tournament and im guessing they will beat the pioneers once.

The 2 loses to minnetonka were due to goaltending mishaps. Now the sophomore David zevnick is stepping up and playing well. Duluth East is a very good team that run their systems almost to perfection.

Yes there were some goal tending mishaps, but there where also a couple costly give aways in thier defensive zone and mistakes made at the blue lines that resulted in goals in both the Mtka games & Duluth East game. Take away those costly give aways/mistake and even with the goal tending mishaps, they win all three.

Zevnick is playing well, but more importantly, fewer mistakes/turnovers by the supporting cast.

Wow,this whole forum shows the utter ignorance of minnesota hockey fans and i laugh as i read some of the comments about delbarton being a prep school allstar team.Delbarton is a private catholic school drawing from nearby towns local in New Jersey and the school isnt even a boarding school.If you cocky minnesota fand want to face the east's best, try a prep school which has students boarding and living at the school.These schools would absoluetely steamroll any Minnesota high school and the games would not be close at all.These schools are like shattuck st mary's in that they recruit except that there are over 60 of them located in New England. To put it into perspective. Delbarton lost to eventual PUBLIC MASSACHUSETTS state champ Malden Catholic 0-3....The best players on MC would be 3rd or 4th line players on a New England Prep boarding school team and if they played a prep team head on they would lose by at least 5 goals and be physically dominated (New England Prep School hockey has even been called "too" physical).Delbarton would lose to a New England team probably a comparable score against Shattuck like an 8-2 or 9-3. So before you talk crap about eastern hockey, you have to know that there is a whole other level above delbarton's falsely named "all star" team which again, would be destroyed by a REAL prep school team. And New Jersey hockey is not a hockey hotbed so to compare that to minny is just retarded.A better comparison would be Massachusetts or Connecticut (Connecticut has the best of the best prep schools known as the founders league which has churned out innumerable NHLer's from famous prep hockey factories like Avon Old Farms). Oh and nice classless comments towards guidos which falsely represent the state and don't even live in Jersey...always great class from our clueless brethren in the midwest who think they are the only ones to play hockey in the US.

WOW......at least we know how you feel. No doubt there is great hockey being played out east, just like Michigan and Minnesota you have a system that works for your players as well as our systems works for us. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water though, not all of us in the midwest think this is the only place the game is played. Try one less cup of coffee and understand it was just one guys opinion.
