Not to be redundant (I've made this comment multiple times but not gotten a solution of any sort), but the issue is the system in which the refs are rated. I don't know any specifics, but in general, the officials of a sport are rated by the coaches. Coaches have control over who will ref their games, and also over a coaches overall rating.Potatohead9 wrote:Excellent point. The Coach can only control his team. But it is the Ref who ultimately controls the game. There is a need for more consistancy from both the Refs and Coaches.HShockeywatcher wrote:You are right. But that is not what anyone is saying. All I, and most on here, am saying is to call the rules as they are written, instead of letting things slide. We are in an imperfect reffing rating system, I believe, which I doubt will change anytime soon.mnhockeynemn wrote:If they ever change to Girls Hockey Rules, it would ruin the sport completely!! So, if you have a coach (or many) that wants a game to be called a certain way, and a ref is calling it by the rules, the coach can give him a low rating because "he didn't like it". I've heard officials complaining about this first hand before. Do you call it right and get badly rated or let things slide and get to officiate better games/more?
The pros don't have this issue because they have a huge organization that monitors the officials. Short of spending millions of dollars to have "ref officials" at every game rating every official, what is a possible solution? Because I agree that there are people that are rude, bad, what have you, that coaches should be able to not want at their games.
I do not care about this in the area of affecting the outcome of games (as the "better" team usually wins regardless) but in the area of protecting the safety of the children out on the ice:
The one game that still rings in my head was two years ago, Wayzata @ East, a player was checked from behind into the boards head first and ended up being taken off in an ambulance. Luckily, he was walking around the next day. I am be wrong, but I believe there was no call initially, and it might've been changed to a minor penalty after everything happened. But it definitely wasn't the appropriate call.
This is one extreme example, but the reason these things happen is because the illegal actions are continually allowed. Period.
