I then check the box score and see he had 2 assists in the 3rd period including one with 15 seconds to go in the game up 18-0. Did the South coach really have him on the ice in this situation?
Please tell me this is a mistake. Was anyone at the game to see this?
One day a coach is going to cost a great player his career by leaving him in a meaningless situation like this.... Hooray for the player with this much talent, BOO for the coach who should be given the "coaching idiot of the year" award leaving him in!!! Don't blame the player!!!!!!
Lakeville South vs Winona? Please tell me this is false...

Kloos was not playing a regular shift in the 2nd and 3rd. I don't believe you should completely bench a player for 2 periods because the other team sucks. He has carried LS most of the year and he deserved to go out there every so often and set his teammates up, which he did. He wasn't going end to end and scoring or overly exerting himself, when he got the puck he effortlessly made one or 2 moves and found someone wide open.. Jesus people, no one likes when the score gets up this high but it happens so deal with it and move on
Probably for the same reason the Harlem Globetrotters don't stick around to cheer on their teammates in the 4th quarter against the Washington Generals. It looks bad. Who gets excited at a football game when a team is winning 42-0 in the fourth quarter and they kick a field goal to go up 45-0? At that point, I think everybody (players, coaches, announcers, trainers, water boys - from BOTH TEAMS) just want it to be over.mulefarm wrote:Why won't he be on the bench encouraging his teammates? I don't blame the kid when it happens though... I blame the coach.

On to thin ice, in my opinion.RickyTicky wrote:Pretty sure your onto something there Jimbo

Problem with LS is that we've seen this happen before. And nobody has looked at the stat sheets for those other games to see if the first line was playing late in the third. Maybe that's what you're doing right now?
Here, I'll help you. Eagan 12, Rsmt 0. Score was 10-0 after 2 periods. Last two goals scored in running time by the fourth line...one was the kid's 2nd varsity goal ever, while the other kid scored his first ever varsity goal. First and second lines sat last 10 minutes of game, alongside the top 3 d-men (4th was injured and did not dress). See a problem there?

Just like everyone's said; we have a system where these games have to happen. Everyone makes the playoffs. It's a catch 22; you want everyone to make the playoffs so no one gets hurt, but then when a bad team is paired with a good one, it's a wasted game.RickyTicky wrote:Kloos was not playing a regular shift in the 2nd and 3rd. From the sounds of it, the score could've easily been double what it was had Lakeville wanted it to me. Maybe it was classless for the Winona coach to continue; he should've just forfeited.
Never heard of a HS coach sending a player to the shower with the game going on? Do you think that would have made Winona feel better?Neuuman wrote:Probably for the same reason the Harlem Globetrotters don't stick around to cheer on their teammates in the 4th quarter against the Washington Generals. Neal, Aaron Broten and Butsy Erickson were sent to the showers plenty of times to watch from the stands in blow out games.mulefarm wrote:Neuuman wrote:Probably for the same reason the Harlem Globetrotters don't stick around to cheer on their teammates in the 4th quarter against the Washington Generals. I guess I didn't have a problem with Kloos being out on D every so often. The kid wants to play and deserves to play and shouldn't be benched for 2 periods in his last home game just because the other team is beyond god awful. The game was in hand after the 1st so putting him at D so he can get some ice and set up teammates made sense. You can only do so much to cater to the other team to make them feel good, you shouldn't have to punish your player by benching them for 2 periods in their last home game. Thats my opinion, I'm sure other peoples will differ but either way this needs to be dropped and move on.. This comes up every year
I know for a fact they weren't, so please don't make things up!Sats81 wrote:Neal, Aaron Broten and Butsy Erickson were sent to the showers plenty of times to watch from the stands in blow out games.mulefarm wrote:Neuuman wrote: Probably for the same reason the Harlem Globetrotters don't stick around to cheer on their teammates in the 4th quarter against the Washington Generals. I think that must be what they want, or we'd be talking about the teams I mentioned above or let's see, Eagan? Edina? Let's throw those coaches out too.mulefarm wrote:Bottom line is Kloos should have been in the USHL so the score could have been 15-0.
Winona got beat by Century and JM by 10 and 11 goals this year. What did anyone think was going to happen tonight? It was simply the most uneven matchup of the night, but not by much.

i graduated from winona and i have to side with the south supporters here. I played in the game last year against south and as much as it sucks to be losing by a lot i enjoyed skating against kloos at the end of the game last year because every shift i went out with the intention of trying to stop him. sometimes i succeeded sometimes i didnt. I knew it was going to be tough. what is kloos supposed to do say coach i wanna take my stuff off im done. my coach offered to let me take my gear off for the third of a blowout last year but i turned it down because i wanted to play. why should he have to miss 1 or 2 periods just because he cant be stopped? he shouldnt be punished by not being able to play the game he loves in an already short season just because he has talent. hats off to justin for playing a hard game because thats what every player should do when they step on the ice no matter what game it is.

You are right! Having Kloos or any of the South’s top players on the ice at a time where the game was pretty much over just shows a total lack of thought. Running the score up is one thing, but using your best players to do so, is classless! There is an old saying...What goes around, comes around. The South coach should look at the EP/Armstrong box score from last night; it could happen to any team. Nice job coach!Sats81 wrote:My thoughts exactly. Nothing good comes from this scenario.gopherpuck516 wrote:WHY would the coach put arguably the best player in the state on the ice at defense in a game that's already basically decided??? What good can possibly come from that scenario? There's a lot more that can go wrong than that can go right. Not saying the odds are good that he would get hurt or anything like that, but in a game that's already out of reach that just seems dumb to put your best player out there at all and especially at a position other than his normal position.longdistancespectator8 wrote:Kloos was playing defense in the third period when he got those points. But yeah overall this is brutal. Kloos shouldn't have played a minute after the 9 goal first period.

Can someone please tell me what the big deal is? The kid was moved back to D half way through the game so that he could at least play in his final game at home. I'm sure the coach, as many coaches do, put out a group of seniors for the last minute of their last home game and they wound up scoring a lousy 19th goal against one of the worst teams I have seen take the ice in a long time. Before you start judging and calling this classless know the facts. I believe LS coach did try to "stop the bleeding" but he didn't want to punish the kid that has got them this far by sitting him for 2 whole periods in his last home game just because the other team was awful. MOVE ON!

It's not "punishment" to sit a star player at the end of a lopsided game. It's "sportsmanship," and if that star player whines about not being on the ice then it is also a "teachable moment." Coaches are supposed to be teaching players good sportsmanship, right?RickyTicky wrote:Can someone please tell me what the big deal is? And stop with the straw man argument...did anyone here suggest that "the kid" shouldn't have played more than 1 period last night? It's the fact that he was still in the game with only a few minutes to go that caught people's attention.
I think this was classless and a bad decision by the coach. The kid has bad plenty of opportunities for home fans to see him.
In close games, I'm sure the 1st and 2nd lines play a lot more than 3 and 4 never gets on the ice. In blow outs keep 1 and 2 off, especially in the third period or it will appear as though you are running up the score.
Look at the CDH football team. In a blowout (and they have many) their starters play a few minute into the second half, then are out for the remainder of the game.
Allowing your stars to pad their stats in a blowout is a bad lesson to teach kids. If I had a son on either team I'd be complaining to the administration.
