(1)New Ulm vs. (3)Luverne
Moderators: Mitch Hawker, east hockey, karl(east)
Actually a lot of people care about this game. The 3a topic was one of the most viewed and most posted on this season. I don't think anyone who posted here or read here expects 3a to do any better than 0-2 in St Paul either. That however doesn't mean any cares thoughts . When New Ulm or Luverne makes state it nice we have an advocate like Setterholm to remind us that class isn't supposed to be for the rich metro/ Rochester, Duluth private schools.
Come Wednesday 90% of the crowd will route for 3A. People do care.

Judging by the views and responses a lot of people care about this game. Whomever wins we either get coach Setterholms brutally honest remarks or Luverne gets to go to St Paul, neither is a bad thing. The Mew Ulm paper isn't. Afraid to pull inches an call out the MSHSHL unlike the metro dailies. If Luverne makes it then a whole new dynamic gets added to the tournament.
Believe me no one on 3A expects to bring home hardware, they do expect to shape the future of A hockey though.

I'd much rather watch a 3A school build some tradition and get to the point of being competitive than watch sandbagging AA schools like STA and TG trophy chase just to suck more money out of their alumni.rbkhockey97 wrote:no actually 3A will always be the armpit of Minnesota hockey. It will never shape class A hockey. They should put St Thomas or Totino Grace in this section just to make the tournament better.

Good post Goldy.
The teams that are a joke in Class A are the trophy chasers like STA & Breck. Once you win more then one State Title as a private school man up and go AA. Every year this happens we hit section final time and two private schools most likely (Blake & TG) whine about 3A. We dont need an all private Class A tourny.
Will 3A get crushed YES! However, when Class A was created it was to help grow the game in smaller towns like a Luverne or New Ulm. Breck and STA make the tournament much more fun to watch BRAVO! but dont complain about the teams that Class A was truly meant for.
Everyone in the State knows that STA and Breck Trophy Chase and to me that is the JOKE!
Go 3A it is what Class A Hockey is suppose to be about!

While I don't agree with the negative bashing you are making, I do agree with the positive comments about the section. From seeing the closeness of this section as well as similar conferences/sections around the state/country to many sports, it is an awesome experience. It is one you just can't get in metro communities. Even if you are not from these communities and show up to a game, it is a great experience.Section 3A HockeyScout wrote:Good post Goldy.

Isn't everyone who hasn't lost in the playoffs yet chasing a trophy? I believe both New Ulm and Luverne are currently chasing one as well.
I think it's funny when the private school part is added to that phrase. If you believe in a tier system, whether the public or your parents are paying your teachers' salaries shouldn't matter.
So, you don't think having 25+ more programs in the state for students to play at opens up more roster spots at public schools? That's exactly what it does do.

I know your an STA guy and I honestly respect what STA does year in and year out. I just get fired up when STA and Breck and TG people get beat out and they start bashing Section 3A.HShockeywatcher wrote:While I don't agree with the negative bashing you are making, I do agree with the positive comments about the section. All parts of the state deserve to get a shot at state. Look at Southwest MN compared to the Metro. Southwest MN should get crushed their programs are so young compared to the metro and northern MN.
People used to complain about 1A but Red Wing, Mankato, Albert Lea all were able to build programs because they gave southern MN a shot. People always complained about 4A when it was Mid-West MN but Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Wadena, Little Falls were all able to grow programs because of it.
The state high school should not change this section if they care about growing the game of hockey. It has given teams like New Ulm, Hutch and LDC a chance to grow and maybe some day a SW Conference team will get that chance.
You have 8 sections or regions in the state SW (3A), SE (1A), Metro West (2A), Metro East (4A), Mid state West (6A), Mid State East (5A), Northwest (8A), Northeast (7A).. That is why it is a STATE tourny not Metro Tourny...
It just gets upsetting when the privates come here and bash us first. So I responded accordingly...
I wish your cadets the best of luck and I am sure they hope to draw 3A in the first round so they can crush us again.

3A hockey scout picked against luverne again. I guess that means they will win.Section 3A HockeyScout wrote:Well we are down to just two teams. One that everyone expected and the other that I think most are still in shock over. We will get our 3A representative after Friday night. Should be interesting to see what happens.
#1 New Ulm Area Eagles (16-11-0) vs. #3 Luverne Cardinals (21-3-2)
This is truly a david vs. goliath match-up. New Ulm Area has an AA size enrollment while Luverne is the smallest in Section 3A one of the smallest in the State.
New Ulm has been to 6 straight Section Finals and 2 straight State Tournaments. Luverne is making there first ever Section Final.
New Ulm has had legitimate high school hockey since the 70’s while Luverne’s first season of High School was 1999. Thus we have the backdrop of what I think sets-up as an entertaining side story.
I just don’t see Luverne making this much of a game. These games are won by Seniors New Ulm has a very strong senior class. Luverne is a really young team they only play about 3 seniors on a regular shift.
Inexperience in the big game with a young team against a team that has been there done that I think this one wont be close.
New Ulm Area 6 Luverne 2
New Ulm Area heads back to state for the 3rd straight time. Luverne earned respect this year no one would have thought they get this far. However the fairy tale of the little engine that could (Luverne) comes to crashing halt Friday night.

Eagles will win
The tournament is set up in a fashion that gives the Eagles a great advantage. Three reasons why they will win Friday.
1. They are AA playing in A tournament
2. They are a private school team
3. They have been on ESPN
