Otherwise, I believe I saw that they'll be showing the OT/shootout in primetime on NBC tonight, and NBCSN has some time slots for replays in the evening, too.
Oshie was born in Washington. He has family in the Warroad area. He is somehow related to Henry Boucha and one of my all-time favorite North Star Gary Sargent.

It wasn't just the media who had him as a bubble player. He was on the bubble for the team USA management. There was a very thorough article written for ESPN that pretty much said the biggest reason he was chosen for the team was Oshie was the one player that Dan Bylsma asked for to be on the team. He comes out of his looking brilliant.
Very classy individual. When asked how it felt to be a hero, Oshie replied "The real heroes wear camo. I'm not one of them." Oshie is a great representative of the USA and keeps everything in perspective.
So this guy gets rented by Warroad for three years, comes to the state to win a class A title, then leaves for a bitter state rival in UND and we claim him as our own and brag about it? Probably the exact same people that complain endlessly about private schools stealing the best players away from their associations lol. Either this behavior is acceptable or it's not. TJ is as far from a Minnesota product as you can get. Sorry

The coaching he got in Warroad brought him a long ways, but what he got was more than that. He learned about his relatives, his heritage, and what it meant to be part of a community and family.
UND a bitter rivalry. Lots of people around here feel a stronger connection to UND than UofM.
Go back to the discount store you came from.
We are proud of TJ Oshie, his family members, his high school and the northland.
And the USA.

I think if you listen to him when he talks about Warroad you get the sense that he considers himself from there. After the shootout he was interviewed and was asked about Warroad, he responded with how it was Hockeytown USA and talked about the support from the town. To me it seemed like he had a strong connection with Warroad.

What does it matter where he played in college? You don't have to renounce citizenship to attend college in another state. UND is the hometown school for players in section 8 and a great hockey school. Last I checked no one is claiming Kessel or Vanek as natives, but McDonagh, Parise, & Stepan are all Minnesotans. Just ask them.
Oshie, or anyone else's hometown is wherever they feel is "home." For TJ, it seems to be Warroad, MN.

No doubt some questions would be raised under today's rules based on the story (but back then it was not uncommon ... Edina did it too). But back then it was all OK.
"Booster" brings Oshie family back to Warroad, let's the family live with the booster until they find a house and dad lands a job (also assisted). It sounds like the family left Warroad not long after Oshie headed to G.F.
Kids (now adults) skating for EGF and TRF in 2005 time frame may feel differently based on the story ,,, salt in the wound or time heals - your call not mine.
Agree that Northern counties associate well with the Sioux. It is closer to most communities and does a nice job recruiting those kids.
My point with what college he went to is this: he was in this state for three years. Not 7, not 10. From almost all accounts he came for hockey. That's fine. Have pride in the connection. But don't claim he's a Minnesota guy. You might as well claim Sidney Crosby as one of our own then too.

Trying to figure out the "back" part; who came back ? Not him obviously, so maybe his dad ?
The relative instrumental in bringing TJ and the family back was none other than the great Warroad boy - Henry Boucha... yes an Oshie relative!
Henry was just on KFAN with Barrierro... Oshie family were Warroad people for a long time. Dad Tim left for Everett WA and Henry was big part of bringing family "home"!

You all can name call and babble on as much as you want about family history in Warroad. Doesn't change the fact that he was imported for hockey. End of story. Yes, Warroad imported someone that barely made varsity when he first arrived. Fact is, I he would have stayed in Washington, he probably wouldn't have become the hockey player he is now and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The story then should be about a kid who could barely make an average team's 4th line but moved to where hockey is king, and made good. But instead the story is "Olympic hero from tiny MN hockey hotbed Warroad". It's cheap journalism. I find the former to be a more compelling storyline. But everyone went with the latter. To each their own

I think the only cheap journalism taking place here is the narrative you are spreading that Warroad heavily recruited/imported some young hockey star from from a far away state. The facts don't support that story at all.
