Lourdes joined the MSHSL scene along with many other privates in 1974, but did nothing of significance until the two-class system began. They made their first Class A state tournament in 2000 and followed this with eight more appearances in the next fourteen years. Their best finish was in 2001 when they lost in the title game to Benilde-St. Margaret’s. They are one of four Rochester teams in the Top 75. In Class A, they are 9-3 in section finals, 12-4 in section semifinals.

#59: Mounds View

Mounds View dominated Section 2 in the late 70’s, going to the state tournament in three consecutive years, topped by a fourth place finish in 1978. Their best team, however, was probably in 1975-76 when, led by Rob McClanahan, they were undefeated heading into the state tournament after beating Duluth East 3-1 in the section final. They have failed to make it to their section finals since the 1978 state appearance. In the past 50 seasons, they are 5-2 in section finals, 7-9 in section semifinals.

#58: St. Paul Murray

Murray was at the Show six times between 1949-63, their highest finish being fourth place in 1949 and 1963. They fell on tough times following the 1963-64 season, failing to get to their section final until their school closed after the 1978-79 season. Murray finshed 11th in points during the 1950's.

#57: Duluth Marshall

Marshall's success in the old Private School tourney is well documented including five consecutive state titles from 1965-69. (Note that private school tournament results are not included in this study). Since joining the MSHSL, Marshall struggled for over two decades before reaching the State Tournament in 2001. Since then, they have gone to state seven times; while they haven't won a championship, they did finish 2nd three times in 2006-08. In Class A, the Hilltoppers are 7-3 in section finals, 10-4 in section semifinals. They have reached at least their section semifinals in the past eleven seasons.

#56: Totino-Grace

Other than their Class A state title in 2002, the closest Totino-Grace has come to winning a title was in 2005, when they lost in the title game to Warroad in two overtimes, and in 1995 when International Falls beat them in the championship. They are always in the mix in their section, having failed to get at least to the section semifinals only twice since the two class system started in 1993-94.

After making it to State in 1954, the Trojans had to wait 50 years before they found their way back; they have 4th place finishes in 2004 and 2013. Since 1975, they are 3-5 in section finals, 8-18 in section semifinals.

#54: Minneapolis Patrick Henry

Patrick Henry made three appearances at State from 1959-64, capturing third-place hardware twice during that span. 1971 marked their final trip to the section finals. Henry finished 8th in points during the 1960's.

Tech made it to the state tournament in seven of the tournament’s first eight years, finishing as high as third place (1948). They have made a few section finals and many section semifinals since then but haven’t returned to the state tournament since then.

#52: Minneapolis Roosevelt

Eight appearances, no championships. Just four teams have been to more tournaments without bringing home the title, but give Roosevelt credit. They’ve been there eight times, more than most schools. Their best decade was the 60’s, when they went to State four times. Seven additional times they reached their section finals. Roosevelt dropped down to Class A in 1993 where they played in their final four seasons. They were 12th in points during the 1950's, 16th in the 1960's.

#51: Lakeville North

North has surged 18 places since the 2011 study, due to two state tournament appearances including a 2nd place finish in 2014. They have had five state tournament appearances in the nine years since Lakeville split into North and South.

The Polars went to the state tournament four times between 1961-81, finishing fourth place twice and capturing a consolation title. They haven’t made it past their section semifinals since 1983 and have lost in their section quarterfinals in the last nine seasons, but are on the list due to the strength of their state tournament berths.

#49: Rochester Mayo

Mayo was strong in the 80’s and 90’s (they are 20th in points in that decade), getting to state six times but only winning one quarterfinal game. Their finest season was 1994-95 when they were edged in the Class AA semifinals in triple overtime by state runner-up Moorhead. Since 2000, they have not advanced past their section semifinals.

#48: Red Wing

One of the more successful teams in Class A, the Wingers went to state five straight times from 1995-99, winning it all in 1997. They also had a runner-up and third place finish during that run. Following another Class A runner-up in 2002, they have made it to their section finals five times but haven’t returned to state. In Class A, they are 6-6 in section finals, 12-4 in section semifinals.

Irondale had the tenth highest point total in this study in the 1980’s, due to their consolation championship in 1980 and a second-place finish in 1981. Irondale has had little recent success and have not made it past their section quarterfinals since 2000, and has had only one winning season since then.

Along with three trips to State in the single-class system, East Grand Forks has six State appearances in Class A, culminating in their first championship in 2014. They also have one runner-up in 1999, and three consolation titles. Since 1997, they are 6-2 in Section 8A finals, and 8-7 in section semifinals.

Eagan is a relative newcomer to the hockey scene in Minnesota, their team created in 1990. Their four state appearances have resulted in two third-place and two sixth-place finishes. They have had winning seasons in ten of the last eleven seasons.

The Cougars have been to State three times, but it was their 2004 championship season most remember, featuring three shutout victories, a unique accomplishment in tournament history. They have gone two-and-out in the last two seasons. Since 1997 they have gone 3-4 in section finals, 7-7 in section semifinals.

#43: Henry Sibley

Henry Sibley had a strong program in the 70’s (16th in points) and 80’s (13th in points), making three state tournament appearances over that time and failing to make their section semifinals only three times. Their finest season was in 1983 when they brought home the third-place trophy. This success has fallen off dramatically as of late with their last winning season being in 1998-99.

#42: St. Paul Harding

Harding made the Top 10 list in the 1950’s (#9) and was the fourth best program in the Twin Cities in that decade. Their finest season was in 1957-58 when they captured second place at State. They also had consecutive trips to State from 1972-74. 1979 marked their final appearance in the state tournament. Their program folded at the end of the 2002-03 season.

#41: Alexander Ramsey

This team was very similar to Washburn with six state appearances and one 2nd place finish. Ramsey ranked #12 in the 60's, and #11 in the 70’s when they had three trips to state including making it to the championship game in 1973. Ramsey and Kellogg combined to form Roseville following the 1985-86 season.

#40: Minneapolis Washburn

Washburn was fairly strong from 1945-62, making five trips to state, but only one appearance followed over the next 44 seasons. A runner-up finish in 1959 was the closest this team got to the state championship. They became part of the Minneapolis West co-op in 2006.
