Slammer, nice post, rational, well thought out, realistic, even shows some humility. I would say your right on 3-2 either way. Or Elk River "Could easily win". the view East has now looking up is not one they have to take very often.Slammer wrote:If East can go all the way to Lakeville North and play the number one team in the state with bus legs and keep it a 1 goal game (1-0), they can keep it close against a less talented team like Elk River.
My head says ER wins 3-1.
My heart says east wins 4-2 en.
I'll say ER wins 3-2.

There hasn't been ER faithful in years. Am I right? Compared to what it once was. With a strong candidate for Mr. Hockey leading the way, and no one even shows up anymore? What gives? The defense isn't THAT bad, and has been improving in the latter half of the season. Come on. There must've been some great games for X-box or Playstation released this least season or something... And don't get me wrong, this isn't just happening in The River, attendance seems to be down severely everywhere. I was thinking the same thing though, can even a super rival Greyhound matchup bring the bodies & the noise in the building, or will DE bring more fan support than the home town?alcloseshaver wrote:I'm hoping the ER faithful show up and liven up the rink. It hasn't been to full yet this year, sometimes as many scouts as non-parent fans. East/ER still has a nice allure to it and The ER kids want to make statement I'm sure.

ha...Always love when someone brings that up. Love the team or hate them, that's as classic as it gets.alcloseshaver wrote:It will be interesting how many show up. Declining crowds since the days of the "Elkaholics". Back when they were known to steal Blaine's state championship trophy. They follow their football team pretty well and hopefully tonight. Don't expect many to travel to Amsoil though.
Good old Elkaholics...

Just finished digging through the record books...the all-time series is actually at 15-14 ER. The Elks and Hill are the only teams East has played more than ten times that they have a losing record against.alcloseshaver wrote:I think these two teams started playing in the Spehar era? The first two meetings were in 1994, so yes, Spehar's sophomore year. It's been a pretty streaky series. The Elks won the first 3, East won the next 5, the Elks won 10 of 12 from 99-08, and East has won 7 of 9 since 09.
As for tonight, I'll be venturing up to Elkland for a visit. East's only prayer is to keep it tight early. They can't come back from a deficit. Play tight, clog things up, and keep it interesting. If they can get the Elks a little frustrated, that's when they'll open things up and go for the kill. Basically, the exact formula they used in the section final last year. We'll see if they have the players to pull it off. I'm looking forward to seeing Jaremko in person, and how this team stacks up against some of the state's other top teams...don't think I've seen them since December.

Wishful thinking but puck hit the pipe, ref was right there. East blocked a ton of shots and took Lutz away. Jaremko was all over the place. Not sure where this East team has been all year, ER had all hands on deck and the game was dead even, only 1 PP in the game and the Elks scored on it. Very entertaining.

System was implemented, Their physical play was a big factor, several big clean bone rattling hits.Slammer wrote:Well, that just shows how good the players are then.alcloseshaver wrote:He is so good he doesn't even need to be there.Slammer wrote:Everyone always makes fun of me for my Randolph comments... But he is the molder of the team.
Howg stopped both JJ and Zerban on breakaways early on. DE picked up the D zone coverage after that. Shots were 8-2 at that point in favor of the Elks. Hounds outworked Elks for stretches of the game. How in the world did the hounds lose to Anoka??? Must not have played even close to the game they played against the Elks. Sections games should be hotly contested an a lot of fun to watch!

That game was well worth the trip out to Elk River. It was a very, very even game. East was the deeper squad, though Jaremko basically took over the game every time he touched the ice, basically skating laps through the offensive zone. He's a phenomenal talent, but East did enough to keep him from finding the back of the net, and the Elks didn't show much in the way of secondary scoring threats in this one.
The keys for East: An adjustment to the system that had them making it very tough for anyone not named Jaremko to get trough the neutral zone. They were also as physical as I can ever remember a team being since the new rules went into place, with a full highlight reel of demolition hits--all clean. Lastly, their shot blocking was superb. I was also pleased to see them do all of this without Randolph in the building. The last time I saw them in one of these games, something was clearly missing. Tonight, not so much; they had all the hallmarks of a Randolph team playing at its best. Great work by Brooks, Mills, and crew.
Alex Spencer was East's best player on the ice tonight, playing lockdown D--he was usually on the ice with the young third line, and covered for them brilliantly. Nick Altmann had some great chances near the end, too. I couldn't see the near-goal near the end--it didn't make any sound, but an East dad who was near that end told Al and I that he didn't think it went in. (Nice to meet ya, Al.
) Brooks was also livid about a non-call when Bunten was hauled down on a breakaway near the end of regulation; by the book they probably would've called it, but they were letting the teams play all night, calling just the one (justified) penalty. They weren't going to call that one.
7AA is wide open, that's for sure. Anyone who gets hot could win it. On to Cloquet on Monday, which is going to be a war.
