I believe there are timing concerns as well - wasn't this at the same time as the championships this year? Another issue as well obviously...<br><br>Re: D3 East coaches... So, if they show up on their own, we can't ask them to evaluate without paying them? Let me guess... another fine NCAA rule! <p></p><i></i>

If an East Coast Coach comes to Minnesota to recruit, it is a conflict of interest to have them involved in the tryout process. We don't want them conversing with the players, it reflects badly on the Minnesota tryout process. It is difficult for them to evaluate and/or recruit both age groups and we have tried to have coaches stick with the same group all weekend to evaluate. There is a lot to think about when this tryout process takes place and sometimes I don't think everyone understands all the ins and outs of what needs to happen at a tryout. Minnesota wants it to be as bias free as possible and have succeeded at this event. Minnesota Hockey is happy to take any ideas that individuals have to make this the best possible event for the players, but there are some things that just can't be done because of all the rules in place by other institutions. <p></p><i></i>

This rationale is what the NCAA cites as well. Understandable, but just too bad that we can't have the most knowledgable people as far as talent assessment goes involved in the process. "Volunteers are hard to come by in this day and age. Minnesota struggles each year to find enough people who want to give up another weekend for hockey."<br><br><br>That's too bad to hear! Didn't realize there was such a volunteer prob in the state of hockey. I for one would volunteer for at least one event a year if I knew about these op's. Is there a clearinghouse for where hockey volunteers are listed? Maybe the process for soliciting volunteers could be tweaked? <p></p><i></i>

I think the thing we often fight is that those that wish to volunteer have some percieved conflict of interest. This makes for trouble - even when those volunteers have nothing to do with the selection process, just the organizational aspect of things.<br><br>Technically, if I'm understanding our NCAA rules correctly, D1 &/or D3 coaches could bench coach in this too, D1 just not evaluate/adminstrate at all. But, then, likely that they'd prefer to simply watch/evaluate from the stands vs. behind the bench. <p></p><i></i>

College coaches could participate in other ways at the tryout, but as GHS said, they would probably prefer to come to this event and evaluate players and do their recruiting. If they aren't involved, they can speak with the players of the appropriate grade and age.<br><br>If anyone is interested in volunteering throughout the year with Minnesota Hockey, contact your local program and let them know. I know there are some rules about conversing with potential recruits prior to the end of an event (entire tourney, etc.).
