section 4
Fergus, as I said before has some power that will surprise, or make or break them. That line, the sophomores last year actually led the varsity into their best streak last year, they started the season like 5-1 or something and the kids that kept getting it done were them, not the seniors, though they werer decent, but had never won anything before and I feel they were not coached that good throughout their career. It will be an interesting season this year with a new coach, Mike Donoghue who teaches Vo tech classes at the high school and has been assistant since he came to Fergus. He has been well liked as a coach and some new young blood at the position should be a good thing, maybe he will give Fergus a little bit of what Bergstrom was able to. Also, Fergus will have a rookie goalie as they played all last season with two seniors and that should be something to watch, untested in varsity games, but pretty decent if I remember right. The JV the last couple of years has won a lot of games, and Donoghue was their coach, this is another prop to him. Another thing that will be different this year is the schedule, they play DL 4 times believe it or not, weakened their schedule with two games against Fargo Shanley(a new program) and only play two section games(LF and Wadena). They also go up to the iron range for a weekend roadtrip against Greenway and Eveleth, as well as some regular games in the conference including a home and away with Crookston. They don't have Moorhead this year wich could be good or bad, I have a feeling Moorhead dropped Fergus not the other way around.
As well as these Juniors there are several players, who, with the right coaching can be good. Remember that Donoghue coached them before and seems to know how to make them win. There might be a little style change to the Fergus game, Donoghue is from Bemidji, but it shouldn't look like a completely new game.

Re: 4A predictions
Lfhockeyfan99, are you saying that Jared is just as good as his older brother? Because I have actually played with both Steve and Lickteig a couple of times, and they were both very good players and pretty even in every area of the game, both very quick players and work extremely well together, but however they do lack size. I have never seen Jared play but if he is as good as you say, then wow Little Falls has a great future ahead, and how old is jared?

Moorhead Schedule
Moorhead dropped Fergus and replaced them with Bloomington Jefferson. Not a bad trade I would think.

Sorry about someone must have gone on my account but licteig is a senior and lil festler is a freshman you can't compare them lictieg is more expeirenced just had to correct that. Jared is good though crap load of talent. But my predictions are that its gunna come down to LF vs FF for the final rematch and LF will take it and go represent 4a at the xcel.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Well, I would rather see Little Falls go than Wadena, they are due, but if it is going to be another embarrasment like last year.............Fergus must go. Not to rock the boat, but shell shocking and awestruckism is something else, Fergus has played a lot of the teams or their caliper their entire careers and know what to expect, that's all. but if they may do it, I'd' rather see LF than anyone else for all of the anguish they have suffered.
I think Moorhead had a good trade off too, but man, that's tradition right down the tubes. Oh well, at least they get some of class a's top programs, and mix it up a bit, Fergus also plays Rochester Lourdes at home........

If little falls want to make it state, this year is the year. Alexandria is dropping down to the 4a section next year, which I think is uncalled for.

section 4
Skrew Alexandria, what have they ever done???? The last time a Section 8aa and Central Lakes Conference team moved down to Section 4a, Willmar has never won a thing, they made it to the championship their first year, but got smoked.

Re: section 4
old school ild agree with alex coming to 4a, bring them on, it will make things at least look respectble, littlefalls looks sharp to player4 or 5, saw them today, their top line moves but thinking that this is there last chance this year, post before yours, not! we will see little falls dominate alex if they move to 4 a. in about 4 years and if anyone can beat that team in class a includeing the private schools ill be surprized.Willmer did not look like a contender for section champs but wadena didnt either, Lines are still being juggled for both those teams it looked like. I know your pulling for the home town kids but falls looks tops to me right now. wadenas playing viginia and eleveth next weekend. 2 senior defensemen out for the games and one jr def out. Could be a tough weekend ill let you know

Fergus Falls
The roster was posted on the internet, a little bit about this team: they have 20 players, only two sophomores this year and no freshman, goalies are senior Swendsen, and Mike Vennerstrom a junior who is solid.
The defense looks like a solid mix of quickness and rugedness: Isaac Vatnsdal should bring some quickness and good puck skills, Kyle Kronemen is a scrappy if not rugged player, Mike Schwarz, Andrew Fick, and Mic Johnson(probably the leader) should put some big, physical bodies in front of an untested goalie, and Sam Kalar who I know little about fills out this core. This should be a real decent defense core, nice skaters, physical play, and attitude.
Up front there is some nice speed and puck moving skills.
High lights in forwards will be Matt Waklawic, Shawn Goos, and Jed LaPlante(the super sophomores from last year). Luke Collins,Ryan Krog and Jake Sjolie will bring that "come on, mess with me" presence in the forwards, Josh Briese( a newcomer to Varsity), Lutzwick, and Riley Ripplinger will be looking for good seasons. Adam Tweet was decent last year, getting good time. The super sophomores this year are Cody Koskie and TJ Gaustad. If Gaustad is anything like his brother Mike (2000-2003), he strikes a strong resemblance in apearance, he will be one to watch, and Koskie has had some great years.
So there you have it, the player by player low-down on the 2004-05 Fergus Falls Otters according to oldschool, pretty accurate, though I have to admit that I would like to have a little more knowledge. I am going to do my best to get to more games this year and keep an accurate post of them. We'll see how it is when they pop their 2004 cherries on tuesday against Sauk Rapids and open their season in a very difficult stretch, the first 6 games will tell a lot. good luck....

And the award for best name in section 4A goes to:

Riley Ripplinger.

Don't know anything about the kid, but ya gotta love a name like that.

And Cody Koskie? One switch of a letter away from the Twins 3rd baseman? And Cory Koskie played hockey as a youth too. Meaningless trivia, I know, but interesting I guess.

Good luck this year Fergus. scheids (the elder one, myself) is back in town and will be at the arena as much as possible to cheer the Otters on.
Scheids
(A legend in his girlfriend's mind.)

Re:
how did the scrimmages at little falls go last weekend?

4a predictions
Little Falls beat wadena 4 - 2 i belive, and lost to Detroit lakes 0 - 1. wadena did not look very tough at all. Little falls played without lickteig in the second half and did not have their #1 goalie throughout the games

scrimmages
i agree with blades...wadena did not look very good at all...on the other hand, wilmar did look like they were playing pretty tough against DL so it should be interesting to see how they do....little falls looked pretty tough with festler and lickteig... paddy stoy did alright in the net for LF and if kluver is better than stoy they should be able ot do pretty well

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... werty16 at: 11/22/04 7:53 pm

???
not sure how you can say wadena looked bad but willmar looked good, i think they tied their scrimmage with wadena playing their backup goalie and being without a senior defenseman. little falls has a good first line, but fall off after that, and none of the teams there had any depth but dl. i think little falls beat wadena by a couple, wadena looked horrible the first half as a lot of players were running around and not playing physical at all. but the 2nd half it seemed like the teams were very even.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Re: Wadena
thats this coming weekend. on friday wadena plays a very good virginia team from what ive heard. kvamme will miss both games due to a mishap, and phil schmidt may also miss both games due to injury. those two make up one of the top lines of d, so it could be a rough weekend as some kids will have to be on the ice for a majority of the game, but i think the guys are in pretty good shape right now. they play eveleth on saturday, so im sure we will know after that. who does little falls and fergus play this weekend?

Fergus
Fergus Falls beat Sauk Rapids tonight in Sauk, they don't play until Dec. 3 in Fergus against East Grand Forks, I don't know about Little Falls. Mic Johnson scored, Isaac Vatnsdal Scored, and Shawn Goos scored on power plays,(at least we know that they can do that this year)......Matt Waklawic and Eric Lutzwick also scored even strength goals, I will try to get to the EGF game, but no promisses................sounded like a good solid start to the season.

4a predictions
I disagree with whoever said LF has no depth. in their first game last night their second line scored 3 goals, all from one player who is a FRESHMAN!, his first varsity game and he pulls of a hat trick is pretty impressive. LF is out 2 first and second line players due to injuries who should be returning soon.

Anyways, saw warroad's team playing amoungst each other sunday night, damn they are huge, i much have seen three players with no necks, they look fast too, i think they will take state.

warroadsalt
warroadsalt, do you know anything about the teams in section 4a besides your brothers play for wadena. Also, i dont think Warroad is in section 4a, they are in 8a so you can start a new topic about warroad and how good they are. I know they are good and i do expect them to do very well this year.

Re: warroadsalt
shutout i think he knows a little 4a, he played in it for a few years. Warroadsalt was on the first team to play bantam a's. in wadena. It was a big step up for the program to get to and they ended up about 500. A couple 12 nothing moorhead games but was a beginning for wadena hockey.I think in high school fergus had anderson at that time and was fun to watch the section play offs those years. Dont count wadena out yet this year alot of seniors missing but should be full strength in about 3 or 4 weeks.

wadena
I think old Wadsvill will have a good season this year. I am confident that they are the best team in their conference and should win it quit easily. But the section on the other hand will be much more difficult. I feel that LF is the best team in the section. Festler and Lickteig are both going to tear this section up and Jorgensen should be solid in net all season.
While Wadena on the other had will be to inexperienced on offense to really have more then one good line. I think lil Petit will have a great season for the wolvs though. Wadena will be solid on defense once Phil Schmidt gets healthy. Kvamme will also help Wadenas team ones he works off his weaks. I have no doubt that he'll start practicing with the top defensive pairs as soon as hes eligible. But the biggest concern for Wadsvill this season has to be gaol tending its week and its going to be ugly. But with all that said I still think wadsvill will still take it to fungus falls this season beacase the wolvs are proven otter killers and i dont even know who the otters best players is. Sjolie?

fergus
Aaron Jorgensen graduated last year so little falls has a sophmore goalie or patty stoy. i dont know who will start, never seen the sohpmore. Fergus started the season with a 5-2 win over Sauk Rapids. Looks like they have 3 lines that are working very well. Shawn Goos, Jed Laplante, and TJ Gausted. TJ's brother Mike was a good player and TJ will be better. Matt Waclawik, Jake Sjolie, and Cody Koskie (another sophmore) are another line. The third line is Adam Tweet, Ryan Krog, and Erik Lutzwick. This line works very hard to get what they deserve. The defence startes of with 2 very experenced big defence in Mike Swartz and Mic Johnson. This is there 3rd year of varsity and both have big shots. the 2nd set is Isaac Vatnsdal who scored the first goal for the otters and kyle Kronemann. Kyle also has some experence playing last year and Isaac is young but very talented. The goalies are Eric Swendsen and Mike Vennerstrom. Eric is the starter and played a great game from what the anouncers said. He was the MVP for the JV team last year and he will do very well between the pipes for the otters. After listening to the first game on the radio it seemed fergus was being very well coached by new coach Mike Donaghue. The team was very prepared to play. I would put Fergus Falls at the top right now but there is a lot season left and look for a great section tourny.

Re: fergus
little falls' goalie paDDy stoy had 30 shots against him in the morris/benson game last tuesday. Seeing that he saved 28 of them is pretty dang ole good. he did well but JUNIOR jake kluver is the #1 goalie right now who was also an MVP for the jv team last year...he should do very well in the nets as he is an extremely talented athlete. As for the rest of hte team festler and lickteig have enough firepower betweeen the two of them to bring little falls to state...their second line is very solid with steven's little brother jared, who is an outstanding freshmen, along with junior joey cotton who had much varsity experience last year, and another freshman beau hanowski who had 3 of the goals against morris/benson...the third line seemed to struggle a bit against morris but they hold there own and do not allow to many goals against their line....little falls looks solid and is my prediction for this year but like oldschool said, its early and we'll just have to see what happens...
