I have, but honestly I can't remember all the details. I think AHA & Stillwater did well @ AHA, but didn't hear anything about Richfield or others. I can't remember any details from SSP, Andover was in that one I think? Maybe Hopkins??? I think that info. was posted above.

By the way - anyone that was at the Festival in IGH @ Vets, let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements. This was the 2nd year, but first on this scale, and I thought it went pretty well. We debated at length about having paid refs vs. coaches and also was some discussion about duration of event & actual individual scrimmages themselves, but the fedback I've received so far has been pretty positive.

At Wakota it was Anoka, Hopkins, Andover and SSP. Hopins beat Anoka in the first game 4-1. Anoka's goaltending looks very good. They are big and can skate. Hopkins really spread the ice and moved the puck and had Anoka chasing them most of the scrimmage. Didn't see the rest of games - well run, good pace and refs called it like it needs to be called this year.

Did Blaine beat EP??

Post by Thunderbird77 »

There is a rumor circulating that Blaine beat EP in a scrimmage this weekend. Is this true? Anyone have details on what happened?

I believe it! Every team is beatable and especially during a scrimmage (scrimmages don't mean anything!)
Plus, if you just crawled out from a rock... let me inform you about something... Ashley Nixon is the best goalie in the state. I'm sure she had something to do about it.
One last thing... It's a scrimmage... Not sure it means much... Good for Blaine... They have one of the best coaching staffs in the state.

Scrimmages mean absolutely nothing. I agree. Many teams aren't playing these depth wise like they may a regular game. Many are trying to get a feel for their team, see who steps up (or back), etc. Some teams come in playing 20 players to another team's two lines, etc.

This all being said, all these scrimmages mean is coaches get a feel for who can play on their team and the players get the experience.

I will say this though. Nixon is one of the best female HS goalies I've ever seen. And, as we all know, that can make or break a close game if some ofense can be generated.

I've also heard it said that it doesn't make a difference how you start. Instead, it's about how you finish.

Often 2nd/3rd string G's play, line combos & D pairings, etc. are far from developed as is any in-season synergy, etc.

Blaine beat EP

Blaine beat EP 2-1, Elk River 4-0, Shakopee 6 or 7 -0...Nixon looked great!, They have 2 young/fast lines that can put the puck away & 2-3 strong D. As mentioned, these are just scrimmages....But Blaine sure played well!, only 1 goal against in 3 scrimmages says alot...

Was at the Richfield scrimmages .... AHA was very impressive - lots of big physical players with skill. However, if there were actual ref's there calling things according to the new rules, the AHA penalty box would have been plum full the entire afternoon. Blake is smaller but looks very skilled as well - the younger Komarek keeps getting bettter. Stillwater is smaller as well, but very very fast. Polanski, a senior D, looked very good - could be a sleeper for some college. Richfield was the weakest, as they were probably the youngest.

Richfield

I too was at the Richfield arena watching the scrimmages. I think AHA was outplayed by Stillwater, but AHA scored more. Richfield beat AHA, but I am pretty sure that AHA sat most of the varsity players. I did not see the Blake AHA game. Blake/Richfield was pretty even. Richfield has a good goalie who will keep them in most games. AHA is physical, but by the time the games really start they will have the discipline to keep out of the bos. My guess is they will be on the side of playing more power plays since other teams will be trying to stop them and hooking more.....

Stillwater played a 4 line rotation and 6 defense in all 3 scrimmages. They look to be very deep and fast. Was impressed with the balance Stillwater has. AHA looked good but I think they will have to change their style against a team like Stillwater or they will get alot of penalties. It will be interesting to see how the new rules affect the games. AHA and Stillwater meet in the first round of the kaposia classic this year. AHA has a very good team with a couple of real standouts. I dont think Stillwater has the standouts like AHA but I think they are deeper with 3 lines that can really go.

Benilde won easily over Coon Rapids this afternoon, winning 6-0. The unofficial shot stats were 36-8. Coon Rapids was apparently missing two of their better players, and they split goaltending duties, but it was pretty one-sided and the difference between the two teams was pretty evident, at least at this early stage of the season.
