Just observing the scores and the Region Tournament pairings and realizing how sad it is that the South Region will actually place 2 teams in the State tournament at the Pee Wee A level. Districts 1, 4 and 5 are playing in the South Region and you will have teams like Edina, Chaska, B'ville, Eden Prairie, Woodbury, Roseville, White Bear, Eagan that will not make it...I could go on and on with teams that should be at the State before any of the teams in that Region. It is really sad to see that the top teams will not be represented. Those 3 districts should not be playing in the same Region together, they should all be spread out amongst the other Region tournaments. My guess is that they would be 0 - ?

District 5 playoff summary:
The D5 #1 seed goes to Buffalo (won regular season championship)
The D5 #2 seed goes to the winner of single elimination, 4-team, tourney played the end of this week. The four teams and pairings for the first round games are Litchfield versus Crow River and Sartell versus St. Michael/Albertville.
The D5 #3 seed goes to the winner of single elimination, 4-team, tourney played the end of this week. The four teams and pairings for the first round games MAML versus Mound Westonka and Willmar versus Hutchinson.
That sets up a South Regional that would look like this:
Red Division: Mpls Park or Highland, Owatonna, D5 #2 (Crow River favored), and D5 #3 (MAML favored)
Blue Division: Mankato, Mpls Park or Highland, Buffalo, winner of play-in game between New Prague and Irondale or Richfield-Washburn.

I guess that's why it's called The State Tournament and not the All Metro Tournament. I'm sure that one of the D6 teams already had that tournament this year

Was a duster and paying for it?????
There playing good but be careful in 2008 they did not even get to State. EP and Edina represented D6. Until they prove they can win the big game I still question them big time. They have not been to the PWA state tournament since the 2005 season. Until they beat the EP's and the Edina's in a one game show down who cares when they get hot! it's about winning the BIG ONE!

District 2 scores from Monday
Forest Lake-5
White Bear Lake-4
Second loss to the Lakers in the past three weeks. The Bears are going fishing.
Roseville-3
Tartan-2
Won in double overtime. Bottom team in the league almost knocks out the top team, but that's D2 at playoff time. Tartan exits the field with grace.
Note on the Chaska/Edina game tonight. The Hawks had Edina really on the ropes in the third period and came close to running time. The Hornets benefited from two Chaska penalties in the last three minutes to add two goals on a power plays (6 on 3 and 6 on 4) with a sixth man (pulled the goalie) to close the score from 6-1 to 6-3.

Chaska's night tonight.
Edina got blasted. Fred gets his way.
We'll see if it is just a ploy. Since these kids love hockey so much they probably just did it to get a few extra games.

Its never an all metro tournament, there are always 2 teams from the North Region that make it to the State Tourney and this is great. These teams typically fair well too. Look at the teams in the South Region does one of those teams really deserve to make it to the State Tourney? If your answer is yes then yes you are the Cidiot. If anyone of those teams/districts was to be put into any of the other Regions they would not stand a chance of advancing to the State, they would not win a game. Would you agree with me on that, if not, you havent watched much hockey. That is sad.

North Regional is not a guarantee that two teams from the North every year will make the State tourney. In fact, if you consider Little Falls “north enough”, there were four teams from the North in the state last year (Little Falls, East Grand Forks, Grand Rapids and Cloquet).
Minnesota Hockey has a four rotation that moves the 12 districts among the four regional tourneys. The rotation every four years means that the following districts will play in the following regions in those four years with total number of seeds for the four year period in ().
D1: South 3 times, East once (11)
D2: East 3 times, North once (11)
D3: West twice, East once, and South once (11)
D4: South 4 times (9)
D5: West twice, South twice (11)
D6: West once, South once, East twice (11)
D8: South once, East three times (11)
D10: East once, North once and West twice (11)
D11: East once and North 3 times (11)
D12: North 4 times (11)
D15: North once and West 3 times (11)
D16: North twice and West twice (11)
The rotation will roll over at the end of the 2010 tourney and revert to the 2007 tourney. This rotation applies to Peewee A and B levels as well as Bantam A and B levels. The number of district seeds given to a district is looked at every fourth year (should be after the 2010 tourney?)
This year the probability of more them two “north teams” is down because the West Regional looks to be a battle between D10 teams and D3 in Park Rapids. Next year, the probability will be up with the North Region consisting of D11, D2 and D12 with D12 hosting and the West Region consisting of D15, D16 and D10 with D16 hosting.
My point is simple. In the four year cycle, the North is guaranteed two teams every other year and has the advantage to send up to four teams every other year. On the other hand, D4 with a total of nine seeds every 4 years (and averaging 10 peewee A teams each year) has only one year in the four year cycle (this year) to send a team to the state. It is unfair for me to equate a nebulous “north” region to a single district (D4), but if you throw out D16 and its 8 teams this year, D4 skates as many peewee A kids as D11 and D12 and half of D15 and gets 9 seeds to a regional tourney in the four year cycle to these districts getting 33 seeds to regional tourneys.

If I remember correct, the last two years Chaska has lost in the region finals.Yakunin wrote:There playing good but be careful in 2008 they did not even get to State. EP and Edina represented D6. Yes, they have lost to the eventual State Champion in the Region Finals the last two years, to Wayzata and Edina (OT).
As for this year, with Chaska beating both EP and Edina already, one of those teams WILL NOT make it out of Districts. So it looks like one of the SHOWDOWNS is over.....

Interesting. Evolution of the State of Hockey continues. My observation this year is that hockey in the north is way down. If the teams aren't from Duluth, Grand Rapids, Moorhead, Roseau, and a couple of other larger towns, they seems to be shrinking in terms of total numbers and quality. I suppose it's been happening over the last few years but it jumped out at me this year.
People have taken shots at the Mpls-Park PWA team but they went north and the cumulative score, vs. northern competition in 4 games, was 51-0. Ouch, not what they expected. A couple of these towns have 15 total PeeWees and are skating A. They can't merge as they're 50 miles from one another where as Osseo-Maple Grove merges and fields 10 PeeWee teams. (Wayzata 10, Edina 9, Lakeville and Woodbury eight)
What does that mean? Frankly I don't know but I think Frederick points out that things change. Rosemount and Farmington among the top Squirt teams is very interesting as these are growing suburbs and finally have the numbers to compete. Farmington has 5 Squirt teams and Rosemount 6. It's a bubble of youth coming up as they only have 3 and 4 PeeWee teams respectively. Both have 8 Mite teams so they're growing
I believe the whole state needs to be redistricted but the other obvious move needs to be two tiers, Tier II Associations with under 500 skaters and Tier I for those with over 500 skaters (or whatever the number is) so they can find appropriate competition with like sized Associations.
Very interesting discussion and the economy will have a likely effect in terms of attracting new mites. Large metro associations sign up as many as 100 new mites a year. Rural and northern ones 8-10-12 new mites per year.
