In my opinion, Smaagaard should have played a year of Jr. It would have made him a player more ready to compete at the college level.Gopher Blog wrote:Highly unlikely. Lucia had Garrett Smaagaard come directly from HS after an ACL injury during his senior year of football.bardown30 wrote:From what I have heard, Gopher coach Lucia was in contact with Budish shortly after the injury and informed him that he would have to play Juniors for a year now, instead of stepping in with the Gophers right away next year.
Same thing with Mike Hoeffel. He messed up his ACL playing hockey half way through his senior year in February of 2007 and he was on campus the next fall.
I doubt Lucia will treat Budish any differently.
Budish will work hard and be ready to compete for the Gophs next year. The kid has great upside.
bardown30 wrote:Now what I am hearing is that he was probably going to have to play Juniors anyway, and that the injury just affirmed this issue. He has never officially signed with the Gophers either, only a verbal commitment.
Your source(s) lack credibility, the kid is the leading scorer in the HS Elite League. He is one of the few that can go right in from high school and contribute.
Unless there are complications, he will be in Maroon and Gold next year.
Let's see, I live in Edina. I play hockey in Edina. My sources include those players on the football team, and multiple players on the hockey team. Can you get much more credible than that? Obviously I can't gaurantee you he will play Juniors, but for you to say that my source lacks credibility, when you don't even know my source is kind of crazy. Have you been talking to kids on both those teams too? Then don't try to say I am wrong. I never said he couldn't make the transition from high school to college, because he can. But that doesn't mean he is going to play college right away. Former Edina player Joe Gleason could have easily made the transition to college(UND) but he is playing in Juniors now, because there are other reasons for playing Juniors than if you are ready or not. I am simply passing on what I hear, from very knowledgeable sources.
Joe Gleason was not ready for D1 according to his coaches at UND. He should be a good player for UND after a year of Jr.bardown30 wrote:Let's see, I live in Edina. I play hockey in Edina. Unless you are talking to the Budish family or Don Lucia directly I stand by what I typed. Gopher Blog knows what is going on. Read what he posted.

Bardown is 100% accurate in his statements about the situation. Zach will be more than fine in the long run. I do suggest you make some calls before you assume your facts are straight.breakout wrote:Neutron 14 wrote:I know how hard that was for you to type....breakout wrote: Gopher Blog knows what is going on.

The gophers have 1 senior forward and four forward recruits for next year and it looks there is only forward who would leave and a few of the recruits are in the USHL right now, so Bardown's statements make sense, come on breakout, just look at the Gopher roster right now and you will see why things are shaping up the way they are and that they probably would have anyway.sticksuphigh wrote:Bardown is 100% accurate in his statements about the situation. I you haven't spoken directly to Lucia or Budish i vote that players on the Edina football team are not the best source on whether or not he will play Jrs.bardown30 wrote:Let's see, I live in Edina. It sounds like it was suggested to him. But I have my doubts it will end up that way when all is said and done. I think this is more of a case of not wanting to promise anything before rehab is complete. Not to mention, there are likely behind the scenes signals about pro departures that may or may not happen.
At this stage, the Gophers lose one to graduation (Bostrum). I think it is fairly safe to say that Stoa is likely to depart given his draft status, age, and strong start to this season.
My personal feeling is Budish and either Birkholz or Condon would step in for those two departing forwards. Early reports on Youso have been less than stellar so I think he is the least likely of the four to come in.
I still believe he is likely to be on campus next fall if the typical pro departures happen. Unless he is more willing to play juniors than I originally thought.

I said I doubted it would end up that way. I didn’t say there was no chance of it.bardown30 wrote:Well only time will tell I guess. But I suppose no one should talk about anyone unless they hear directly from the family. That goes for you and gopher blog. You would be hard pressed to find sources better than mine.

No player officially signs anything until mid-November of his senior year at the earliest.bardown30 wrote:Now what I am hearing is that he was probably going to have to play Juniors anyway, and that the injury just affirmed this issue. Which is why I said I have spoken to players on the hockey team too.Bash Brother wrote:I you haven't spoken directly to Lucia or Budish i vote that players on the Edina football team are not the best source on whether or not he will play Jrs.bardown30 wrote:Let's see, I live in Edina. You guys are being ridiculous. No, I haven't talked to Don Lucia. I am in no way saying that I am right, but my sources are a lot more accurate than all of yours, I can promise you that. Friends of Budish and fellow hockey players. Hockey news travels fast within Edina High School, you'd be surprised. I guess because no one has talked to Lucia we shouldn't talk about this situation. Is that what everyone is saying?Bash Brother wrote:Don Lucia playin hockey for Edina?bardown30 wrote:Which is why I said I have spoken to players on the hockey team too.Bash Brother wrote: I you haven't spoken directly to Lucia or Budish i vote that players on the Edina football team are not the best source on whether or not he will play Jrs.
