 :) :)

That said, this whole "member in good standing" business is VERY vague indeed, but reading in the considerable space between the lines here, it sounds like this association wanted to get rid of this family and waive them out (which they undoubtedly wanted too), but the DD wouldn't go for it, so they're SOL. Except that there's clearly a case (seemingly) to be made for a grievance, if no one will let this poor girl play hockey anywhere and there is no disciplinary reason why. (IE she/family is not SUSPENDED, they are NOT IN GOOD STANDING, with no definition in the bylaws of what this status actually is nor how to reverse it. This is a terrible loophole that any lawyer would drive a truck through... and drive back out again with a boatload of money.
Another words, now that I realize you are not speaking of my association, disregard me chasing your bus down along with the pack of other board members nipping at the back tire. With some having 18 plus years experience as a board member, we would not condone this type of behavior and stand by the almighty fight against the laws instituted.... who's bringing donuts to the next monthly meeting?

Youth Hockey is a kids game...it's pretty simple...let them play.

Agree.

It sounds like it's in the hands of the regional director and the state.
They can wrap this up quickly and get her evaluated this weekend with a couple injured kids. All's well that ends well.

I hope we've all learned a lesson or two about trusting your pal, Inigo. It's not surprising to hear a story or two from parents that take their young ones to E Bush Lake or to various summer programs. It is hurtful that some of you considered me a crackpot crazy conspiracy theorist, and still would have if MH middle management wouldn't have stepped in to prove my case. I slept well knowing in my heart that Ugottobekiddingme, and those like him, have done a wonderful job providing hockey experiences in their communities, and that hocmom, and those like her, have ruined hockey for an entire generation in their geographical locations.

With all due respect, how does someone remain on the association board for 18+ years? My local requires that you have a child in the association to serve. I think that's a pretty good policy and keeps the perspective fresh and with the times.

HD41: Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't you said your local association is horrible and run by a bunch of idiots and you will never have your kids play in that association?

Yet you like the idea of a revolving door board? To be fresh and up to date on the latest trends?

I don't know hocmom's board position. Fundraising? Concessions? Hockey Operations Director? But a board having a good mix of short and long time members can be very good. Same as having a mix "hockey minds" and "worker bees".

Back to the story of the waiver girl? It all seemed to unfold in a matter of hours. Does Inigo have more inside info to share?

In my 20 years on the board I had many jobs. I am more of an organizer than a hockey person. I ran tournaments, did fundraising, I was the pres for a bit, ran the meetings. Flipped lots of pancakes, that type of thing. The power trip is huge.

I agree that it is good to have a mix of vetrans and new people on the board. If it were not for the new people who would pick up the pizza?

I assume if you invest in a business you would choose one that changes the entire board every 3 or 4 years?

Requiring your board to have kids playing currently in the association seems to me a way to GUARANTEE that there will be a disgruntled minority convinced that there is a conspiracy against their own families. (There will always be that disgruntled minority anyway, I know.) But having a few impartial non-parents on the board seems to me a nice balance -- ideally maybe someone who has HAD kids through the system, no longer does, but wants to provide the same positive experience to those who follow. Maybe someone with -- gasp! -- experience and continuity and institutional memory, and yet no "dogs in the fight."

A strange baseline assumption some folks around here seem to have is that volunteering is somehow always selfish and self-promoting, and I find that depressing -- and simply wrong, in my own experience.
