Karl:
Some players who deserve consideration:
G: Dingman, (and probably Dugas if he plays well tonight)

D: Juergens, Stevens, Reno, Becker

F:Malmquist. Haller, Lavalle, H. Gorowsky (I thought he played well, but he likely has no chance since they went two and out)

I know there are more, but that's a good start in my eyes.

Also, I have an all-tourney team vote, and while I have some idea of who I'm going with, feel free to throw out names or your own ballot.

Top 2 lines,4 dmen and both goalies from STA.
That did actually cross my mind. But do the goalies really deserve it when they see 5 shots a game?
They don't deserve it.

My Class A All-Tournament team ballot:

Forwards: Hajicek (EGF), Colford (Breck), Perry (STA), Novak (STA), Koepke (H'town), Benson (H'town). Apologies to Gronseth, Lindstrom, and a whole bunch of Cadets.

Defensemen: Schmidt (STA), Dougherty (STA), Zeleznikar (H'town), Pionk (H'town). Not too tough there.

Goalies: Zevnik (STA), Smith (H'town). I toyed with Campion and Johnson, but it's hard to pick a player on a 2-and-out team, and Smith did just enough in the semifinal.

Housley's bladder is once again on the same schedule as mine. I also heard him saying "the wrong team won last night," in the hallway earlier. Hmm, I wonder which game he was referring to?

Also, for a place that is supposed to objective...there are an awful lot of smiles up here after two periods of STA-Hermantown.

If the tongue lashing Plante just gave to the ref is any indication, you better get your popcorn ready.

I'm on it. :)

Not sure if they got it on TV, but Bruce was following the refs all over the ice during STA's celebration. I think he may have a thing or two to say.

I don't. (Though I spend enough time creeping on other people's that I should probably just make a hockey-related one...if I do, I'll make sure I get a link on the forum.)

East-Wayzata notes.

Coach O'Leary was pretty blunt: "We were not good." He said they were "ready to play but didn't execute anything." He also talked about the lessons of his first tournament; he said he picked Randolph's brain at the banquet some, and Randolph gave him advice for working out the scheduling of the week, and told him to simply enjoy it. One of the biggest takeaways was the importance of keeping focus, and just how impossible that focus is. O'Leary also talked about Wayzata hockey's bright future, and his pride in seeing the support this team has generated over the past few weeks, and how this might inspire future Trojans. If I may editorialize for a moment, I've really liked what I've heard out of O'Leary these past few days--he seems to have both a winning personality and a clear focus on the big picture.

East's Randolph said the Hounds' effort today "speaks volumes for the type of character" this team has, and that "he didn't expect anything less." This team is "full of guys who have been here before," and he "couldn't be prouder." Unlike last night, the Hounds "continued the momentum" over from their strong start to the game. Phil Beaulieu said that his early goal was a major boost for his confidence and led him to step up all night long.

A reporter noted that this was, in his opinion, one of Randolph's best efforts; when pressed, Randolph said that he approached this team just like any other, but that this one became one of his favorites, and he appreciated the work that went into identifying roles for players, getting them to buy in, and finding new roles for the returners.

The last question was about Randolph reaching 500 wins this season; while Randolph agreed this was "awesome," he said he is most proud of East's 14-1 record in section finals during his time as head coach, noting how the Tourney can often be a crapshoot, whereas sections gives ample time for preparation for each opponent and makes it more difficult to simply get hot at the right time.

My Class AA All-Tournament Team ballot:

Forwards: Herdt (Moorhead), Toscano (DE), LaValle (HM), Slattery (HM), Malmquist (Edina), Hurley (Edina). First five were easy; Herdt is something of a shot in the dark but he had a strong run through the consolation bracket.

Defense: Nanne (Edina), Reno (Edina), Becker (HM), Beaulieu (DE). Apologies to Black (HM), Moore (DE)

Goalies: Dingmann (Wayz), Dugas (HM).

For some reason they have yet to collect my ballot, so I switched in Benjamin for Dugas. (Of course, I did this immediately before the second Hill goal.)

Maybe pull Dingmann?

His performance today was so so, was it not?

I might. That would leave me with zero Trojans, but I suppose it isn't too crazy for the 4th place team not to have anyone.

They played two good games, but left with a 1-2 record.

Dingmann was their MVP for the first two; however, that was washed away today. Just my opinion.

I'm out for the night...I have East alums to meet. But in the next 24-48 hours, expect some notes on the postgame press conference, a final set of rankings, and some sort of reflection essay like the one I wrote last year.

It's been a blast. Thanks for following along, everyone.

I don't mean to bash the kid as I'm sure he's a great player with an off game, I really feel Slattery had no business making the all tourney team. I watched him all throughout the third period make mistake after mistake. From simply not moving his feed to multiple turnovers, all at a time when his team needed to step up. Again, don't mean to criticize too much because maybe he was just worn out or something but I think they could have found someone else who deserved that spot.

Yeah, there's a bunch of picks on both teams that have me shaking my head.

Notes from the AA championship press conferences.

MSHSL rep enters with a herd of Edina players and announces: "The Edina players said they didn't need their coach, but he's on his way." A bubbly, out-of-character Giles rolls in a few moments later.

A reporter asked about this Edina team's identity. Giles replies by saying, "I'm not sure what the identity of these goofballs is...they're real characters, and work extremely hard." Anthony Walsh, he says, is "the character," and "the ultimate team player."

When asked about his goal, Walsh said he was considering going top shelf and then "thought, what the heck, I'll go five hole" and described himself as having "rock hands."

Giles joked that the five-hole comment was "the biggest lie. He didn't look anywhere," and added that Walsh "deserves something special."

When asked about the game plan for the entire Tourney, Giles said the Hornets "didn't think much about individual opponents," but instead "on getting to their game on the ice." He didn't think these Hornets were an overly physical team, but their goal was always to "outwork people" and "get them to start and stop as much as possible" when attempting to break out. They sure succeeded on that front. He cited a turning point in the season as the first Duluth East game, when they were "swatter around like we were Bantams" and realized their skill alone wouldn't carry them.

Giles on Tyler Nanne: "We were really confused by Tyler. He wanted to be a forward, he wanted to be a defenseman...I think he even snuck in goal one time this year." The purpose of moving him back to defense was to "get a better skating person back there."

On the Hill side, Coach Lechner related his postgame message to his team: "We always fight for that top spot. We have ice time on the schedule until March 9th. We aim for the very top, and it can seem like anything else is a failure. But you are not failures."

He added that the "leadership was there," and said that, by the end of the season, he simply "opened up the gate" for the team's leaders--namely, captains Zach LaValle and John Dugas. He added that "Curt Giles is a great friend," and said "our heads will be up, just not for a little while."

As for the game, Lechner noted Edina's aggression out of the gate, which was something Hill "hadn't seen lately." He also noted their struggles on special teams and the "momentum, but no results" in the second period. "It was just not meant to be tonight," he added, and this sort of game "starts to wear you down. It's challenging."

The players agreed, using words like "panicking" and "flustered" to describe their performance. They lauded Edina's effort and forecheck, and Willie Brown said it "felt like they had one hundred people on their bench. They were relentless."
