Let put it this way. In the 20 seasons Lucia has had teams with all his recruits, meaning after the first 3-4 seasons of building teams his way, he has not won a single game at the Frozen Four in those 20 seasons. That includes a decade now of having his guys at the U. Ok, Fairbanks was bottom feeder. CC was the most dominant team in college hockey his first three years (ie not his recruits, but he still led them to wins which I am not taking away from). It’s very clear cut that his best years are generally the 3-4 year after taking over a program and by national championship standards, his teams are irrelevant after that.
Only Denver with 4 games won at the frozen four and BC who is in a class by itself have won more games when it counts than Eaves recruits the last 8-10 seasons.
Speaking of BC, look at Jerry Yorks record. Many people don’t know it but he was at at Bowling Green and they even won a ncaa title during his 5th season. BC was garbage his first 3 years and since then the most dominant team possibly the history of college hockey. What is stopping the gophers from being in the same class as BC? Please don’t say Yale’s goalie stood on his head, North Dakota cheats, or Garth Snow and the NHL have a conspiracy to pull talent from the gophers. Remember, he has had to build that program and convince kids to come to boston and not play for the traditional powerhouse (BU), not get the best education (Harvard), and probably be lower on the depth chart (Northeastern).
“Arguably just as good recruiting classes.” It sounds like you’re knocking Don’s recruiting ability. when you lose a players like Ryan McDonagh it’s no wonder your team is .500 that season and UW is playing for a national title. It’s also pretty clear that his teams are constantly unprepared coming into Friday night series openers. Many times player production decreases under him. So Don, who has so many advantages over the rest of league and NCAA can’t recruit as well, has trouble motivating and getting increased production out of players. He better be thankful for Minnesota nice and the ‘next year is our year’ attitude that defines Gopher athletics. Wow, a good winning percentage! You basically host every Christmas tourney, league playoff tourney, often have a regional or NCAA at home advantage and have the easiest travel of any team in the league. Put that with getting the most talented players and 9 times out of 10 having bigger, faster players than your opponent and Miley Cyrus could have a .600 winning percentage behind the bench.
Yep he is the worst coach ever...but!! He still has the most hardware out of any coach in the former wcha in the last 12-13 years. Correct?
So why hasn't hakstol been fired!? What has he done there?
Those so much parity in college hockey which makes the sport amazing. It's not like NCAA football or basketball where it's the same 5-8 teams winning it every year.
You want to make fun of the gophers for losing to Yale. The gophers played Yale the toughest in the tournament.
Also what I love are the people that are gopher fans and abc university fans too. Seriously people!? Route for one team!!
I think don has the hardest job in the country because we are a hockey crazed state and people think they know so much better. I am not a fan of always getting the high end recruits that are going to leave in 1-2 years. Take nick leddy for example or Jordan scheoeder. I am a HUGE fan of nick leddy. If the gophers don't get those two then everyone will complain about don that he can't get the big recruit. When he does get them then everyone complains about how his players leave early. Finally Wisconsin went through a period of that.
I have always said worst coaching job would be at the u of m...because of the fan base criticizing every move. And also for the fact that you are the main rival of every team in the conference.
Why would people in the cities care about hakstol being fired? We are discussing dons ability to recruit/build a national powerhouse. He has 20 seasons under his belt without a single frozen four game won. His cc and gopher teams were unreal his first 3-4 years so maybe he can manage a team but can't put one together that people in this state expect.
Parity? Bs. The gophers are the anti parity. He can basically build a team with whatever mix of size, skill, grit, and so on that he wants. He can grab the best mn hs players, Ann Arbor players, ushl, shattuck, etc. if you want to talk parity compare how umd has to recruit vs und or Scsu, or even Mankato. The u has every advantage in college hockey to bc or better. You always bring up Jordan Schroeder but why don't players like that get results at the u like Nathan gerbe or Brian gionta? What is wrong with bringing in nick leddy? Eaves just kept Justin Schultz for 4 years as the best defenseman in the ncaa. He kept Brendan smith on d for 4 years as maybe the best college d as well. McDonagh, Gardiner, and mcbain all stayed 3 years and were nhl ready d when they left. What's the problem?
