Lex says every year that it's more of a relief to win the section than anything else. When parents, players, and fans all expect the team to contend for a state championship every year, the bar is set tremendously high. If you use this as a measuring stick, then yes, the season was a failure. When sections come around, all bets are off and the regular season successes mean nothing if it doesn't translate to postseason success.

I totally understand what you and BlueLineSpecial are saying. Full credit to the team and coaches - everyone who participated in the season should be proud to be a part of one of the greatest high school sporting events in the nation, but some schools set their standards higher than others. The best programs (HM, Edina, Roseau, etc...) expect to make the tournament. They are the first to put those expectations on themselves. It's not an insult to the other teams, it's just a belief in themselves and the kids skating next to them.

As a Hornet fan, I enter each season expecting to win the series against Eden Prairie, win 20 games, and make it to the state tournament. I get that it doesn't happen every year (maybe the Eden Prairie thing does), but wining programs keep winning by setting those expectations on themselves. Calling it a "colossal failure" might be a bit strong, but I definitely understand where you are coming from.

Sorry. I mentioned in another thread I was heading out for a couple days. Wife, anniversary, I promised no hockey obsessing


Woke up to about 15 'wow' or 'ha ha' texts and I knew what had happened. Obviously I'm upset, shocked, and somewhat speechless. This was a team that I had doubts about all year. I'm sure doubters can easily find them in my history throughout the year. With that said I didn't see this coming.

I didn't see the game of course, so I can't give any analysis. I was clearly wrong about my bravado (some of which is more for show; I like rustling feathers from time to time) and I was wrong about Stillwater. They are better than 'mediocre' as I called them. They earned it and I wish them luck, I really do. What a great memory the whole community now had. Congrats young men.

I know there is a lot of pain for the players, some blaming themselves and apologizing to their teammates. It just shows how much these kids love the game we all do and it hurts like hell when that thing ends. But this team can hold their heads high. My sage advise is to see this as an opportunity to grow. In time you look back at these moments as the greatest time of your lives. Good luck to the seniors in whatever they do next.

The tourney this year should be a lot of fun. I'll enjoy the games and hope for some more upsets, great games, and moments we get get talk about 20 years from now.

Good luck to Stillwater and Luverne at state! Someone needs a reality check towards "more name calling and over reacting" but at least TJ in Sochi made most of us proud. Hang in there HM and Lech as next year brings about new opportunities...some just don't know when to close their trap.

I guess the US didn't win gold because they didn't actually have a player from Warroad on the team. Shouldn't test fate. Sometimes it's best to close your trap in those scenarios

Let me understand what point you are making towards HM and the program because obviously the debate team excluded your participation. BLS is a admitted supporter of private schools which drain talent from local and any association offering player talent. Also admitted to talking to the players personally regarding a "colossal failure" although they ended 22-3. Must be a team booster or assistant coach but also leaving the failure on the head coach Bill Lechner with outstanding credentials, BLS is a typical HS program enhancement advocate. Bashing Minnesota for accepting TJ Oshie for representing the USA beating Russia in Sochi in competition because he lived in Washington and speaking out of both sides of his mouth on open enrolled players. I wouldn't expect any program to achieve any level of success with people like BLS but good luck to HM as he has claimed you. Deafening makes sense here.
