I guess I'm a little surprised Centennial only edged up 2 spots despite 2 Tourney berths since the last running, though it's hard to argue that their credentials are any better than the teams ahead of them.

A lot of the defunct teams, meanwhile, have taken noticeable tumbles. It'll be interesting to see where the highest of those land.

The two-and-out tournaments didn't help. Had they won just one consolation semifinal, they'd be #40. Those teams in the #38-44 slots are tightly bunched.

#54: Minneapolis Patrick Henry

Hirsch 2nd round pick by North Stars out of high school.I'm had a bunny who said 80-81 Henry was good helped by death of MPLS North HS Hockey kids went to Henry including Ron Bouley,

Patrick Henry made three appearances at State from 1959-64, capturing third-place hardware twice during that span. 1971 marked their final trip to the section finals. Henry finished 8th in points during the 1960's.

#39: Cloquet

Cloquet’s finest season was arguably in 1991-92 when they took state champs Bloomington Jefferson to overtime in the Tier I state semifinals before losing. They also took home the consolation title in 1982 (without Corey Millen) and 1993 (when they entered the state tournament with a 24-1 record). Cloquet also has 15 section finals (5-10) to their credit and has made at least the 7AA semifinals in twelve of the past fifteen seasons. They were ranked 16th in points in the 1990's.

The result of combining Alexander Ramsey and Kellogg in 1986, Roseville made the state tournament in their first season. Two more appearances at State followed, highlighted by a third-place finish in 2002 and a second-place finish the following year. The Raiders have finished under .500 only five times in their 28 year history, and also have eleven section finals (3-8 ) and 25 section semifinals (11-14) to their credit.

#37: Duluth Denfeld

The Hunters make the list on the strength of what they did in the 1980's (8th in points that decade); three tournament appearances from 1986-89 when they captured third place twice and were consolation champs once. They moved to Class A in 1997 and have made it to their section finals only three times since, losing each time.

Bemidji’s finest decade was the 70’s when they ranked #10 in the state in total points as a result of four state tournament appearances, topped by a 2nd place finish in 1974. They added two more appearances in St. Paul in the mid-80s but have not made an appearance at State since 1986, despite making their section final five times.

#35: Cretin-Derham Hall

Cretin won the state Class AA title in 2006 and finished fourth place three years later. Since joining the MSHSL in 1974, the Raiders have appeared in twelve section finals (3-9) and is 12-10 in section semifinal games. They are 15th in points since 2000.

Richfield ranked #11 in the 60’s in this survey, appearing in three straight state tournaments (1962-64), coming away with a consolation title and a fourth place finish. They also had some success in the 1970's (12th in points) just shy of a state title in 1976. The Spartans were upset by Duluth East in the 1991 quarterfinals when they had possibly their best team ever. They moved to Class A in 1995 and have struggled since, only appearing in three section semifinals since then.

#33: Hermantown

I'm going to leave the "bridesmaid" reference alone here; the fact is that the Hawks have been very successful in Class A, with one championship (capping an undefeated 2006-07 season) and sixth runner-up finishes, including the last five seasons. The move of St. Thomas Academy to Class AA seemingly opened the door for Hermantown. East Grand Forks slammed that door shut in 2014, but Hermantown has a bright future. They are 12th in points since 2000.

#32: Hastings

With a second-place and third-place finish at State, the Raiders were 14th in points in the 1990's. In addition to the before-mentioned finishes, Hastings also has a 4th place and two consolation titles to their credit, and are 9-6 overall at State. 1999 was their best shot, getting to the Class AA title game before being blanked by Roseau. They have only played in one section final since 2001.

#31: Minnetonka

The 2009-10 season was the Skippers finest, finishing runner-up to Edina at State. Their program has grown stronger through the years since their first state tournament appearance in 1985 (remember that marathon Thursday night quarterfinal game against Jefferson?). Since the two-class system began, Minnetonka has been in nine section finals (3-6) and seventeen semifinals (9-8 ). This team should move up the Top 75 in coming years and would move up significantly with a state title or two.

#30: St. Thomas Academy

The most successful program in Class A history, here is a little known fact about the Cadets; they were in Class AA for two seasons (1993-95), losing their section quarterfinal game both years. Obviously they fared far better in Class A, making it to state eight times starting with their first appearance in 1999. After winning State five times in an eight-year span, the Cadets finally opted up to Class AA in 2013. St. Thomas Academy ranks 9th in points since 2000.

Breck is another very successful Class A team, similar to St. Thomas Academy with ten State tournament trips and four championships. In addition, they have capture third place three times and taken home the consolation title twice. In their Class A section games, the Mustangs are 10-5 in finals, 15-4 in semifinals and has lost their section quarterfinal game only twice. Breck is 11th in points since 2000.

#28: Apple Valley

Apple Valley’s first appearance at State was in 1981 when they brought a losing record (due to having to forfeit a number of games over a player eligibility issue) in and took home a 4th place finish. Their best season was in 1995-96 when they had a 27-1 record en route to winning the Class AA championship. It took them fourteen years to return to the state tournament when they took 4th place in 2010. Since 1981 they have appeared in seventeen section finals (5-12) and in twenty section semifinals (17-3). They also rank #7 in the 1990’s decade in points.

#27: Benilde-St. Margaret's

Benilde is the second team to jump eighteen places since the 2011 survey, due to their Class AA championship in 2012. They also had two Class A titles to their credit (1999 & 2001) prior to opting up to Class AA in 2005. Since then, they are 2-2 in section finals, 4-5 in section semifinals. They are 10th in points since 2000.

Elk River has had a team since the 1950’s, but made little noise until they finished fourth at the 1993 state Tier I tourney. From 1997-2005 they went to State five times, winning it all in 2001 with a 29-1-1 record. Since 1993, the Elks are 6-7 in section finals, 13-8 in section semifinals. Only once since 1992 have Elk River lost a section quarterfinal game. Elk River ranks 13th in the 1990's, 14th since 2000.

#25: White Bear Lake

The new point system hurts White Bear Lake's ranking somewhat, dropping them six places. Despite never having won a State Tournament quarterfinal game, they have at least seven more state tournament berths as anybody ranked lower, and only six teams ranked higher than the Bears have been to state more often. What is equally important is that (once they have lost that first game) White Bear Lake has responded fairly well, winning the consolation title five times. They have also made it to their section finals 37 times. White Bear Lake ranks 11th in the 1990's due to going to State five times.

#24: Anoka

Anoka’s five state tournament appearances have been spread out from 1985-2003; only once have they been to state in back-to-back seasons (1997-98 ), finishing as consolation champs in 1997 and then losing to Duluth East in the 1998 Class AA championship game. They avenged that loss to East in 2003 by beating them in the quarterfinals en route to their first and only state championship. Their best recent chance at getting to state since then was in 2008 when they were 21-7 and lost to Cloquet in the Section 7AA finals. The Tornadoes have struggled lately, losing four of their last six section quarterfinal games.

#23: Bloomington Kennedy

The Eagles had a very strong run from 1983-91, going to State five times and winning it all in 1987 when they were 25-1. They are ranked 5th in points in the 1980's. From 1969-97 they appeared in fifteen section title games (6-9), including ten straight finals from 1983-92, and 24 section semifinals (15-9). But from 1997-2013, Kennedy did not advance past the Class AA section quarterfinals. Starting in 2013, Kennedy plays in Class A.

#22: Eden Prairie

The rap on Eden Prairie until recently was that they couldn’t win the big one. From 1992-2008 they went to State four times but were only 1-4 in championship bracket games, 2-8 overall. Winning State in 2009 and following it up with another title in 2011 silenced those critics. Indeed, they rank #6 in points since 2000. In addition to their two state championships, the Eagles have two fourth place and one sixth place finish. Since 1990, Eden Prairie is 7-7 in section finals, 14-6 in section semifinals.

#21: Holy Angels

2011 was the first time the Stars were knocked out in their section quarterfinals since 1998. They were dominant from 2002-05, winning two Class AA titles, a third place, and a consolation championship, going 7-2 in championship bracket games and 10-2 overall. Their first appearance at state was in 1999 when they came in fourth place. Holy Angels’ success had been recent and strong, coming in at #5 in total points since 2000. The Stars have fallen on hard times since 2007-08, first being stopped three straight times in their section semifinals and then losing in their section quarterfinals the last four seasons.

how does the point system work? by just seeing the 2 stats of titles and appearance i was thinking STA would be a little higher. has been a fun thread to follow now that the 3a thread has died down

Basically, it works by winning games starting with your section semifinals. Each round won after that is worth more points.

Winning these games in Class A carries less weight than an equal accomplishment in Class AA.

Regular season records are not considered.

The initial topic created in 2011 has more information. Some retooling has been done since then, rewarding winning championship round games at State at a higher level.

#20: Blaine

Blaine did not get so far as their section finals until 1992, the same year of their first state tournament appearance when they finished in third place. They have made nine more trips to State since then, including their 2000 state championship when they defeated Duluth East 6-0 in the finals. They have finished third on three occasions and are 12-14 in all games (6-9 in championship bracket games). They went to state six straight years from 2006-11. Since 1984 they are 10-4 in section finals, 14-7 in semifinals. The Bengals rank #7 in overall points since 2000, 12th in the 1990's.
