I should clarified "everyone". I'd catch a game or two of my nephew's in a smaller northern town when I'd get that direction - but for sure a few games every year. Coaches and fans knew that if any (age) group of kids could succeed it was this class. They read eachother well and were successful.

You are right about that

W900, You cerainly have that observation right on about Grand Rapids teams of late. Hopefully the 'lone ranger' stuff is in their past now that a few have moved on because of graduation.

Slinger: We were discussing chemistry and you asked who the group was that I felt had chemistry (clicked).

It was a group of kids from a smaller town in northern Minnesota. Anyway, looking forward to a great hockey season.

Hey Rapids lost 2-1 in OT to East in the final a couple years back. That's pretty close. You also have a severe perception problem. Ofcourse you need solid role players on the other lines. All I'm saying is the Elite players sure help! Get your head out of your butt!!!

Look what happened to the Vikes after trading Moss!! Chemistry is good when you're winning, it sucks when you're losing, bottom line.

Re: Moss and chemistry???

Post by puckhead89 »

Nope, not so much. Vikings/Moss are currently NEVER good examples for ANY sport to model themselves by....even in the "chemistry" department.

Well, people have their different opinions on Moss, mine is, if we have him this season the Vikings are not 2-5.

The thing I'm getting at is to be successful you have to have dynamic scorers on the team. The type of guy that can take a team on his back and get it done. Will score a goal at a key moment. Duluth East had it with Rob Johnson, CEC had it with Mitch Ryan. Does that mean "team" and "chemistry" are not important? No. East was a good team and probably had good chemistry, but w/o RJ, I don't believe they get it done in that final. Just my opinion.

GR19, so what you are saying is that chemistry is important but within that chemistry must be a goal scoring horse? I disagree. Look at So. St. Paul with Alex Stalock (sp) in net? They didn't have any big time goal scorers, (well that I recall anyway) but this team "defended" themselves all the way to the State Tournament. No, they didn't win the big dance, but they went to the tournament none the less.

Maybe what you are trying to say is that chemistry is great, but unless there is an athlete or two, no matter what position they play, who is or are willing to step up to the plate and come through, dig deep to find a way to win...then that is chemistry.

I'd say that is part of it. After contemplating, I must say there are many factors that make a team successful and have good chemistry. Sure your example is nice, any others? Mine would be difficult to number. From watching HS hockey and talking to others with a greater knowledge than that of myself (hard to believe, I know) goaltending is key to winning. I look at the two teams in the 7AA final last seaon. One person told me before the year they had the best goalies. That is also a common thread to all state tournament teams. Some like lunch pal and hard hat, I like lunch pal and hard hate WITH a horse.

slinger-you got it.

Post by W900 »

Ok Slinger you got it. Lets have some math for all:
25 Games Per year.
Just for the numbers say 45 shots Per game.
.85 save ratio=6.75 Goals
.90 save ratio=4.50 Goals
.95 save ratio=2.25 Goals
Graphs/charts and all could follow but we all know what it is about. There was an old goalie from GR back in the the mid 70's that was pretty good, from what I here- he was in the mid 90's from the rumor mill (BP). They won the state, had 6-7 players go on to play college hockey. Bottom line...I'll through it out for responce.

GR-I just came back from the MSP area and had a chance to watch a couple games for the Elite league in Blaine. I think it was the playoffs. I can say- with a high degree of certainty- that these are not the top of the line athletes whether it be hockey/football/soccer or what ever. Sorry.

You are so stupid! When was I talking about goalies being athletic? I said having a good goalie is an important factor in having a winning team. It doesn't matter what I say, you twist, and add to what I'm saying to cut me down and I'm tired of it. I think it was gunslinger that said only a fool argues with a fool. We'll I've made a fool of myself enough already with the conversation I've had with you.

gunslinger. Team Wisc. played tough and beat the MN Red Team at their own game! Wisc. outshot Red in the 1st period 18-4! Wisc. knew that after the 1st period they could play and eventually defeat Red...and they did handily.
