The Rise of the North in Coming Years?

Depth will be the biggest hurdle to overcome for northern teams. Many can assemble a great top line, or have an amazing goaltender. But an ability to have 4 lines playing at the level you can find in the metro is going to make it tough. Not saying it can't happen. Look at a Roseau, for example. They may produce a fantastic top line periodically, or even a couple of very good to great lines. But is that going to hold up in the Tourney when you go up against an Edina or Hill where they can roll 4 lines? Not sure. Moorhead and even Duluth are slightly different stories IMO. They are big enough communities to produce a team with good depth.

GR had no issues disposing of those cities teams with their top line in 2017

Little Greenway nearly rode their top line to a class A title recently.

Depth will always be the key in smaller communities but with TV timeouts during tourney time its a lot easier to rely on 1 or 2 lines to carry a team.

Those 2 teams were so much fun to watch!

Northern hockey looks good moving forward. They have to adapt with the changes. They are on the right track for sure.

Rock Ridge is a good example of rolling with the changes. All of those schools were hard pressed to be really solid every year on their own. Together they will be competitive most years. (And great now and then)

Hibbing/ Chisholm is big enough to be a force most years and is looking real good now and into the future.

Cloquet, Proctor, Hermantown, and the Duluth Schools are all more than capable of really good teams on their own.

Rapids and Greenway, along with Roseau and Warroad, could join forces someday if necessary. ( Hope I don’t receive any death threats for the last scenario)

Bottom line is I don’t see Northern hockey falling by the wayside anytime soon.

It would be nice if Hermantown was to opt up to AA, then Andover could play with the north suburbs, where they belong.

A few years I talked to Pat Guyer about consolidating Grand Rapids-Greenway and he said, "that'll never happen!" Lol!
FYI, Pat is Geno's dad. Geno led the Gophers to back to back NCAA championships '02-'03.
I think we all know the girls have been combined for years. Andover is also in their section like the boys.

Yes, and a few short years later they almost took home another title.
Unfortunately, it's hard times again, but this year's team was made up of mostly 9th graders and 3 sophomores. So....we'll see what happens.
Even so, we still travel up and support the boys ( and girls too)
Proud of Mercury Bischoff for winning Ms. Hockey award & the scoring title.
Now the GR boys & Grand Rapids-Greenway girls have to figure out a way to beat Andover.

All you have to do is look on Elite Prospects and you will see the evidence of where these players were from and which bantam team they played for that were on those Hermantown High School teams. You can’t call BS on facts
