To be more encouraged by what the bats are doing than Silva's struggles with Nick Swisher is a good point. Batista, Hunter, Morneau all were big, that collection of players did not do what they did tonight for this club last year. The Twins have two starters (Radke, Silva) that rely on experience, movement, location, and matchups. Some nights their movement is better than others. The point is, they will get hit hard and do not have the stuff to dominate like a Santana, but if they get some help offensively they have the moxy to gut out wins.

Well Irish, I thought for years that LeCroy had pictures of Carl Pohlad doing something really bad because I couldnt explain his presence on the roster any other way.

I agree that Radke has been an asset to the team and a gutty competitor. I dont realy care that he is overpaid, they all are.

But they seemed to have fallen in love with him when over the last couple of years, 9 milion would have bought a hitter or 2 that might have done more for the club.

I hope the pitching comes around.

7-2 Twins

Post by Blue Breeze »

Lohse gives the team its first quality start of the season, good to see him have a good outing after the disaster in Cleveland. Liriano has come on and dominated with 5 K's in 2 innings of work.

Hunter hits another homer, hopefully this power is a sign of things to come. White continues to be horrid, he has to be come around one of these days. On the verge of a sweep against a very good team, with another very good one in the Yankees coming to town.

Kevin Garnett's the most overpaid player in any sport in this town; is Radke overpaid though? Look at what Lohse (4 million/yr)got in arbitration for pete's sake. I guess if you can throw the ball to home plate on the fly there's a market for you. Besides Radke eats up innings which is a big plus even if he does give up 4 runs in the 7 he pitches, it's better than half the guys in the American League.

He's not a true #1 or #2 guy, but anybody in the majors would take him and his durability for 9 million a year. In Radke's salary range, I'd take only Maddox over him.

Mike Mussina has similar numbers to Radke and gets 19 million/yr. Kerry Wood gets 12 million/yr and has gone over 200 innings just twice in 7 years, plus spends more time on the DL than anyone for the money he's paid.

I agree, they're all over paid.

8-2 Twins in the bottom of the 8th. White (.086) and Morneau (.20 continue their assault on Ted Williams' .400 season with a combined 0-7.

Zero - number of Twins' errors in the series

Four - walks allowed by Twins pitching in the series

Three - number of games the Twins' covered in the series

For those of us who toughed out watching those Twins games last August and September, this three game set was a breath of fresh air. Do you realize that Nick Punto and Lew Ford were the 2, 3 batters for most of that awful stretch, no wonder they weren't scoring. The Dome has to be considered the A's House of Horrors. Since '01, the Twins' record vs. the A's (especially in the Dome) has been outstanding. I recall a crucial four game sweep of the A's coming out of the '04 All-Star break that kick started a great second half charge.

goldy, I agre with most of your last post but would not classify Musina's and Radke's career numbers as similar.

Mussina's numbers put him on a differeent level above Radke.

I dont care what The Boss pays Mussina and comparing him to Radke in that way doesnt really get us anywhere. Ryan has a budget. He needs to spend wisely. I dont think spending the 9 million on Radke the last couple of years was wise.

They should have traded him for prospects and bought a couple of hitters.

Re: Mussina v. Radke

Actually, comparing Radke and Mussina does make sense. The Twins need a veteran pitcher to balance out the young talent and journeymen, otherwise they might end up with the same problems that they had last year when they didn't have any good veteran professional hitters to balance the batting order.

If King George shells out $19 million for a pitcher like Mussina it drives up the salaries for all the other pitchers in the same category and whatever Mussina did in the '90s, the fact is his numbers have been very comparable to Radke's in the past few years. If you can come up with a good veteran pitcher that the Twins could've had for less than $9 million, I'll stand corrected.

Enough Radke talk from me, how about Liriano? He's striking out almost two guys an inning right now!

Young vs. Old

Post by boblee »

Tonight is a battle of youth vs. Vetran. Scott Baker vs. Mike Mussina. Baker didn't have a good start in Cleveland earlier this year, but tonight will be different. Baker will be fine. Mussina USED to own the Twins, but not as of late. The Twins stay hot at the dome tonight. Twins 5, Yankees 4.
Grand Rapids-2006 State Runner Up

Is Baker this good? OR, Was Baker this good? These questions sound the same, but they will produce two different theories on what unfolded tonight on the big green carpet?

Is this the beginning of a great career for a Twin Cities stud, or is this a "career start" for another Kyle Lohse. If Baker's effort tonight becomes routine and Liriano becomes the same, this could become a devastating rotation with Santana. I foresee Brad Radke's agent pleading with the Twins to return his client for '08 season @ 1.5 million/year plus incentives to be the number 5.

Re: Twins Pitching

Post by ChrisK »

I went to the game last night, good to see the Yanks lose and the Twins get some nice pitching from Baker. I was up in the cheap seats and it seemed like Baker was pitching up in the zone a lot but he got the outs when he needed them. He seems to be mentally tougher than Lohse, Lohse has the stuff to be a very good pitcher but gets unfocused when things don't go well. Liriano threw two innings on Thursday so I wasn't expecting to see him, but he's already got 12 K's in 6.2 innings that's very impressive.

The Yankee fans who sat behind us for the first few innings astutely noted that the bullpen is a major problem for them. Torre left Mussina in for over 110 pitches which is a bit unusual this early in the season but the reason became clear when the bullpen gave up another two runs.

Twins fans were really riding Rondell White and for good reason: he's hitting .079 right now. It might be time to move him down lower in the lineup and maybe move Batista into the four-hole.

Twinkies WIN! Twinkies WIN!

Anybody goto or see that Yankee / Twins game this evening? Seeing Rivera blow the save and lose was AWESOME! I thought it was over...

Post by ChrisK »

I was listening to it off and on via the radio and came back just to hear them win it. Wow! I see that Rivera pitched 1.1 innings, Torre must have brought him in early another sign that the Yankees pen is hurting. A really nice win for the Twins, these were the kind of games they'd lose last year.

I got my ticket from a friend last night and only noticed today that it was priced higher than a normal game. Apparently for some of the popular games this year, like the Yankees and Red Sox the 'cheap' seats are $9 instead of $6 and the other seats are also priced higher.

The higher prices on certain games are what franchises are now calling "premium tickets". Some team (most likely the Mets or White Sox) came up with the scheme a few years back when interleague play began. Sox and Met management knew fans would fill their empty parks when their crosstown rivals blew in. Thus, knowing they had leverage, jacked up the prices on those games. Not only did they raise the price, but in order to get Yankee or Cub tix you had to buy tickets for other games as well. Now all franchises have followed suit, including the Twins. The Cubs, notorious for hiking prices after last place finishes and selling their own tickets to ticket brokers (legalized scalpers) are the worst offenders out there. Any night game, interleague game, weekend game, rival opponent game, NY team, or West Coast team is considered premium.

Dome Power

Post by boblee »

Twins are 5-0 at the DOME this year! The crowds have been good, as has the baseball. The Twins are only 1-5 on the road, so doing good at home is...well...good.
Grand Rapids-2006 State Runner Up

Think about what made the '87 and '91 post-seasons special.....home cooking. For the Twins to emerge as a factor in the AL this year they have to re-establish their home dominance. For the fan and as far as asthetics go, the Dome is a dreadful park, we all know that. However, the Twins must get that home field advantage back. Even thought the Twins were back to back to back division winners, their Dome field advantage was not evident in those post seasons.

Who has bigger ones? Gardy for continuing to bat White 4th, or White for continuing to play without a kevlar jersey? Doesn't matter, once Sierra is activated Tuesday, White will be a high priced reserve.

Radke with a rough outing today, it's gonna be hard to come back from a 5-0 deficit against the Yanks. Still gotta be considered a success taking 2 of 3 from the Yanks and 5 of 6 to start the season at home.
