Scrimmages

Post by SEhockeyDAD »

Centennial, Wayzata, St. Francis and Rochester Mayo scrimmaged.
Only saw the Mayo scrimmages. They played Centennial close, but lost by a couple. Played Wayzata closer, I think it was 4-3 Wayzata. St. Francis was overmatched. Tough to tell too much, each team played everybody.

I got to Hibbing yesterday...I saw three teams play and here are my thoughts..

GRG Lightning-Allowed 2 goals in the 5 scrimmages, won all 5, looked very good this weekend, but need to learn to bury the puck

Bemidji-Looked ok, didn't score, but played some pretty good defense and osborn was tougher than a nail in goal.

WBL-Lacked team speed, but had fairly good overall talent, and again, good goaltending

Iron range scrimmage fest

Post by Wildwillwinthecup »

I thought WBL looked good. They played 4 lines and were moving girls aroung between JV and Varsity. They went 4-2 and remember it's called a srimmage fest for a reason. I thought all teams were very even in talent other than young Buffalo and Chisago.

I also felt the lightning played the best as a team numbers 10 and 13 were great and a very good goalie. Bemidji had one girl who was great blue and white socks and team was fast. Hibbing also looked very good (Big) one goalie much stronger than the other otherwise was would have won more.

Rumor has it that HA didn't show up for a scheduled scrimmage with CDH and the Novas. The CDH coaches apparently were not notified and were more than a little ticked off according to a couple of Nova players. HA sent their JV team to play.

Rumor is true we were there. Nova Varsity, CDH Varsity and AHA JV. Very disapointing for the Nova and CDH Varsity teams that were there on a Saturday morning - more than an hour of ice went unused.

AHA Varsity were in Richfield practicing.

Not sure what kind of misunderstanding happened but this has been on the AHA team calendar as a JV scrimmage since mid September. No mention of CDH on the calendar at all, just the Novas.

Correction: Lightning allowed 1 goal in the scrimmages...not sure which goalie let it in, but both goalies played outstanding.

Was up at Cloquet this weekend... Great level of play, every team looked good. I was particularly impressed with how Tech's defense and goaltending looked. Defense really played the body well, even with a few lapses. Kaasa looked flawless with the exception of maybe one goal. Tech should be a great contender in section 8AA this year, if they start to put the puck in the net a little more.

Winona/AL scrimmage was a pretty close affair. Can't remember the final score, but I think AL ended up on top by 1. Two pretty even teams.

AL/Cooper scrimmage ended up 3-1 in favor of Albert Lea. Very physical game, lots of penalties and there should have been more called, but they only had 2 HS kids officaiting. I thought Cooper was good defensively and their goalie is solid.

Intersting note from the AL/Cooper scrimmage is that both coaches were teammates on an Albert Lea HS team back in the early 80's. A top 10 team and probably one of the best teams AL's have ever put out on the ice. Unfortunately, they got hit real hard with injuries (broken jaw, couple broken collar bones, etc) late in the season and didn't advance too far.
