Running up the score is part of the game. It might be an ugly part, but a part none the less. Teams in this state don't get respect unless they bury inferior opponents. There is no stat line for respect or class. The goals, assists and Wins are all that matter when the powers that be make the rankings. I had the displeasure of playing for a doormate high school team, we took our share of whippings, but everyone of us was happy to be playing hockey. We won some, we lost a bunch. Some teams are just not that good. Join the boy scouts if you want everything to be giggles and sunshine.

classy teams come from classy coaches
i disagree with this statementRunning up the score is part of the game. It might be an ugly part, but a part none the less. Teams in this state don't get respect unless they bury inferior opponents.
i think teams that run up the score get less respect from coaches, players, fans, media, etc...
in the end, high school hockey is a game played by kids and it shows alot more respect to the game and your opponent to skate the 3rd & 4th line or make the extra pass (or 2 or 3)
24-0 is not anymore a W than 8-0
IMO

I agree to an extent, the 3rd and 4th lines should absolutely get an opportunity to log more minutes in those games. Anything that makes a team better in the long run is smart. Creating bad habits by forcing bad passes and not taking open shots is not helping anyone. Things may have changed since I played, but then JV players could play 2 periods JV and 2 Varsity in one night. Against teams that you know you are going to bury, let them get experience. I think it is disrespectful to the game in general to not play at 100%.
I was coaching a baseball team once and we were ahead about 25-0 in the third. We had just cleared the bases and there was only one out and this team couldnt throw a strike nor make a play in the field.
I told my next hitters to lay down a sacrifice bunt so we could get the inning over with, enough is enough. They muffed the first one but did manage to get the next 2 and the inning was over.
Before we could take the field, the other coach trotted over and said he appreciated the gesture but thats not baseball and we might as well end the game. I agreed and that was that.
The point is that we always look to the coach who is ahead to do something "classy" to remedy the situation.
You cant win if you are the one who is 'running up the score'. If you keep playing hard with everybody, you will tick some peole off. If you tell the players not to shoot, you will tick off somebody else. If its so painful, let the guy who is behind end it.

Like I stated before I watched two teams that could of destroyed a less talented team then them and beat them into a new zip code but didn't because they have too much class for that. I know Ashland coach and he wouldn't want those other teams to lay down for them...he would want them to play hard so his team can learn from it and get better and hopefully this young Ashland squad will. Only time will tell, but my hat is off to these two organizations they truly showed they are a class act in state that takes thier hockey very seriously.
