7A should win it all and Cloquet has a fairly good shot in 7AA. Section 8's only chance is Roseau and it is slim at best.

Hey Slappy ... some people accused me of not supporting the Spuds this year ... well, I beg to differ.

In a nutshell ... here's what I've jotted down thus far ...

Ladies and Gentlemen .... Meet the Moorhead Spuds!!

How do you like these apples? Take Moorhead for example (and ole Scout ain't even covering them this year)

GAME # 1 Moorhead 8 – Buffalo 1 (1-0-0) Nov. 30, 2006

The Moorhead High School boys hockey team put on a special teams clinic Thursday – and Jordy Christian was the featured speaker. The Spuds senior let his stick do the talking, as he scored two power-play goals and
added a short-handed tally to lead Moorhead to an 8-1 victory over Buffalo at Moorhead Sports Center. Christian also assisted on two goals – one on the power play, and the other on a goal just after a penalty expired. Moorhead was 4-for-8 on the power play on the night, helping the fourth-ranked Spuds win their seventh straight season-opener. “It’s the same five guys out there on special teams as last year, so we should have some moxie,” Moorhead coach Dave Morinville said. “We were getting shots, and we were getting chances to score.” Christian’s first two goals put the Bison (0-3) away. Buffalo’s Ross Trousdale tied the score at 1-1 with just 1 minute, 57 seconds to go in the first period. Christian responded with his first goal just 25 seconds later, and then added another a mere 1:15 into the second stanza. Both were power-play goals. “Those were big,” Christian said. “They had a little momentum going, and those two changed that. It took the wind out of their sails a little bit.” The rest of the wind was removed over the next 16-plus minutes, as Moorhead tacked on three more goals in that span. “We knew we had to put them away when we had the chance,” Christian said. “We didn’t want them hanging around.” Christian scored the final goal of the second – with just 16 seconds before the break. It came after Christian dogged a Buffalo skater until the puck squirted away at the Bison blue line. The Spuds then broke into the zone and hung the Buffalo goaltender out to dry with some sharp stick-handling before sliding it home. “That one was the one I really liked because it was a Jordy-type of goal,” Morinville said. “He just kept pestering him and pestering him because he knew he could make a play. That’s a good player.” Pat Deitz had two goals and an assist for the Spuds, while Nick Thielen had a goal and three assists. Moorhead’s next action comes Saturday when the Spuds host White Bear Lake. The puck drops at 6 p.m., as the start time was moved up to accommodate White Bear Lake’s travel home.

GAME #2 Moorhead 5 – White Bear Lake 2 (2-0-0) Dec. 2, 2006

High school kids aren’t usually patient when it comes to, well, anything. Either nobody has told that to the Moorhead High boys hockey team, or they just aren’t buying that notion. The calm, cool and collected Spuds patiently worked their way to a 5-2 victory over White Bear Lake on Saturday at a jam-packed Moorhead Sports Center. “We were moving the puck pretty well all night – we were really tic-tacking it pretty good,” Spuds coach Dave Morinville said. “We had some pretty goals, and they came from working it around.” Again, Moorhead was sharp on the power play. Nick Thielen scored a pair of power-play goals on the night, and the second proved to be the game-winner. Clinging to a 2-1 lead late in the second period, Thielen knocked in a pass from Jordy Christian for the two-goal edge. “We moved the puck around and knew what we had to do,” Thielen said. “We’ve pretty much got everybody back from last year’s team, so we have a lot of confidence in each other.” But White Bear Lake didn’t fold, drawing back to 3-2 with just 1 minute, 7 seconds to go in the second. The goal came on the power play, as Jake Hansen took a shot from the point that clipped a defender before deflecting into the net. The Bears had the momentum, but the Spuds’ savvy came into play in the third. After killing off three penalties at the start of the third, Moorhead’s Mike Weiss scored a goal that started at the back with Jeff Foss. Four perfect passes later it was 4-2. “That was a big goal after they had us 5-on-3 for about three minutes,” Thielen said. “That’s what good teams do. They answer to take that confidence away.” Moorhead, ranked fourth in the latest Class 2A poll, was 4-for-7 with the man advantage in Thursday’s 8-1 win over Buffalo. The Spuds were just 2-for-7 on Saturday, but they peppered ninth-ranked White Bear Lake’s zone with quality chances. “I thought, territorially, we kicked them pretty good,” Morinville said. “We looked good, but we didn’t get a finish.” Weiss’ goal may have been the prettiest of the night, but the Spuds’ opening tally definitely received some consideration. Christian fired a scintillating pass through two defenders to Pat Deitz, who calmly corralled it with his skate before banging it upstairs for a goal. Christian finished with a goal and three assists, while Foss also had a pair of helpers.

GAME #3 Moorhead 12 – Bemidji 0 (3-0-0) Dec. 7, 2006

Dave Morinville thought a quick start by his Moorhead boys hockey team would intimidate Bemidji on Thursday. He wasn’t kidding. Eight different players scored goals and the defense kept Bemidji’s offense at bay as the Spuds rolled to a 12-0 victory at Moorhead Sports Center. Moorhead held the Lumberjacks to just 12 shots on goal. “If we got on them right off the bat, I thought we could intimidate them a bit and we did that,” Morinville said. “We moved the puck well, and it was everybody.” The second-ranked Spuds pounced quickly, as Sean Ambrosie’s first goal of the season started the scoring just 2:04 into the game. The defense was sharp from the start as well, as Bemidji didn’t get a shot on goal until 12:12 into the stanza. “We have a good group of defensemen, so we feel like we should shut teams down,” said Spuds defenseman Jeff Foss, who also had two goals and two assists. “We definitely have some good chemistry going in this locker room.” The Spuds were 4-for-5 on the power play, and a pair of shorthanded goals made them 2-for-6 on Bemidji’s power play. The win was a tuneup for Tuesday’s game at top-ranked Roseau. “We wanted to get on a roll going into Tuesday,” Foss said. “That’s a big game, so we wanted everybody to keep things going.” Jordy Christian had a six-point night for the Spuds, notching two goals and four assists. Pat Deitz and Michael Weiss also had two goals apiece.

GAME #4 Moorhead 4 – Roseau 1 (4-0-0) Dec. 12, 2006

Sooner or later, teams are going to learn. Committing penalties against Moorhead’s boys hockey team can be risky business. Even going against the Spuds’ penalty kill is tough. Second-ranked Moorhead used two power-play goals and a short-handed tally to dump top-ranked Roseau 4-1 at a packed Roseau Memorial Arena on Tuesday. “We’ve been working together a long time, and we know where to put the puck,” said Moorhead’s Pat Deitz, who scored one of the power-play goals and assisted on the other. “We feel good out there, and we just keep working and working the puck.” Deitz’s goal came 6 minutes, 6 seconds in. Jeff Foss took a shot from the point, and Deitz deflected it into the lower left corner of the net. “That was huge getting the first goal, because they are a good first-period team, and they’re at home,” Deitz said. After the Spuds’ special teams did their thing, the defense and goaltender Joe Duncan did the rest. Roseau managed to get 24 shots on goal in the game, but the Rams mustered just three quality chances on the night. The rest of the shots came from long range. “We did a real good job of playing team defense, and when they did have a breakout, Joe Duncan came through,” Moorhead coach Dave Morinville said. “This was easily the most (Duncan) has been tested, and he really came through with a nice game.” The Rams had a chance to get back into the game midway through the third when Deitz was whistled for a tripping penalty. But Moorhead’s Ben Ammerman struck on the penalty kill, putting in a rebound of a Michael Weiss shot just 33 seconds into the Rams’ man advantage. “That ended up being a very important goal for us, especially when it was short-handed,” Morinville said. “They ended up scoring, so it made it two goals instead of one, and that was huge.” Roseau made it 3-1 when Ryan Larsen finally beat Duncan with a rebound with just more than three minutes to play in the game. Jordy Christian sealed things with an empty-netter 2:39 later, which was also assisted by Deitz. The win was a big road victory for the Spuds, but Moorhead has two more tough games up this weekend. The Spuds host Grand Rapids on Friday and Duluth East on Saturday. “We’ll enjoy this one, for sure, but we have some tough ones coming up,” Morinville said. “This is only one game, and we’ll see them again. But it was a good win.”

GAME #5 Moorhead 5 – Grand Rapids 3 (5-0-0) Dec. 15, 2006

Put a pair of blindfolds on Moorhead’s Jordy Christian and Nick Thielen and send them onto the ice together. Odds are they are still going to find each other for a couple of goals. The two hooked up for two goals Friday – one 22 seconds into the game and the other with 2:51 to play. The latter sealed a 5-3 victory over No. 10 Grand Rapids at the Moorhead Sports Center. “Nick and Jordy just have a way of scoring big goals for us,” Moorhead coach Dave Morinville said. “They’re smart and unselfish and make plays for each other.” Thielen had a goal and three assists, and Christian had two goals and an assist. Christian and Thielen are top-ranked Moorhead’s top two scorers this season with nine and seven goals, respectively. Christian has assisted on every Thielen goal, and Thielen has assisted on five of Christian’s goals. The duo’s first hookup on Friday was typical. Thielen stole the puck at center ice and made a great move to get some space. He passed to a breaking Christian, who torched the goalie on the one-on-one break. “He’s an all-star,” Thielen said of Christian. “I just wanted to give him a chance to shoot. When he’s one-on-one like that, it’s about 99 percent he’s going to score.” The goal was the only score of the first period, as Grand Rapids’ backcheck was causing the Spuds problems. Morinville then switched Pat Deitz to the second line and brought Sean Ambrosie to the first line. Grand Rapids tied the game early in the second, but Morinville’s change paid off just 1 minute, 24 seconds later as Ambrosie scored on a long pinpoint pass from Thielen. “We wanted Pat’s speed on the second line to put (Devin) on the wing for a little more muscle out there,” Morinville said. “We put some rugged guys on the wall, and it ended up working out for us.” The Spuds were up 4-2 entering the third. Midway through the final stanza, Grand Rapids’ Zach Morse scored a great goal to cut into the lead. Standing next to the left pipe of the Moorhead goal, Morse flipped the puck into the top netting, just over the goaltender’s shoulder. “That was a great hockey goal, and it was good to see us with that fire to come back,” Grand Rapids coach Bruce LaRoque said. “Moorhead’s a good team. They weren’t giving anything away.” Thielen put the game away 4:39 after Morse’s goal, finishing a 2-on-1 break by knocking in a great pass from Christian. “It feels good to get a goal like that in a big game like this,” Thielen said. “I’m just glad I have the teammates to make plays like that.”

GAME #6 Moorhead 2 – Duluth East 0 (6-0-0) Dec. 16, 2006

Joe Duncan felt like he owed the Moorhead boys hockey team a favor. He didn’t wait long to deliver. After giving up a couple of shaky goals against Grand Rapids on Friday, Duncan was the best layer on the ice Saturday. The senior netminder carried the top-ranked Spuds to a 2-0 victory with 26 saves against No. 5 Duluth East at Moorhead Sports Center. “I didn’t have my best night (Friday), and the guys helped me out,” Duncan said. “I stuck with it. It was my turn to step up.” Duncan’s most important play came in the closing minutes with the Spuds clinging to a 1-0 lead. Skating with an extra attacker, the Greyhounds put the pressure on. After saving one shot, a breakdown behind the net left the puck sitting right next to the crease, waiting for anybody to pounce. Duncan got there first, bounding on it just before a pair of Duluth East skaters got there. “It was unfortunate because the puck had eyes (on Friday), but tonight he came up big,” said Spuds coach Dave Morinville. “That save at the end was a nice save – a very big save.” The only goal Moorhead (6-0) needed came early, and from a familiar source as Jordy Christian lit the lamp at the 4-minute, 22-second mark of the first period. After that it was a battle between Duncan and Greyhounds goalie Ben Leis – who stopped 35 shots in the loss. It was Moorhead’s third game in the last five days. Morinville said he thought the Spuds lacked the pop they had in previous wins against Roseau and Grand Rapids. That, combined with a hot Duluth East goalie, made things tight. “Their goalie is very good, and he made saves look easy,” Morinville said. “But it seemed like we weren’t completely in it. We weren’t that good, but we found a way to win.” Pat Deitz clinched the win by scoring an empty-netter with just 41 seconds left in the game. The win gave the Spuds three victories in the last five days over teams ranked in the top 10. Next for Moorhead is North Dakota rival Fargo South, which beat the Spuds 5-4 last year. The Bruins have a solid goaltender in Sean Deichert, and Duncan said he expects another tight game – even if he wants something else. “It will probably be close again, but I hope we blow them out,” Duncan said. “We still have a bad taste in our mouths from last year.”

FIRST PERIOD: 1, M, Christian (Ambrosie, Thielen), 4:22.

GAME #7 Moorhead 5 – Fargo South 3 (7-0-0) Dec. 21, 2006

Moorhead’s boys hockey team would’ve been a good game-show contestant Thursday. The Spuds were quick with answers all night. Every time Moorhead gave up a goal to Fargo South, the Spuds came up with a rapid response to set the tone for a 5-3 victory at a stuffed John E. Carlson Coliseum. The announced attendance was 3,334. “You don’t want them getting any momentum going because the fans get crazy in here,” said Moorhead’s Jordy Christian, who scored a pair of goals. “That’s what good teams do … find a way to answer and change the momentum.” Moorhead scored four of its five goals almost immediately after a South tally. South’s power-play goal by Ian Powers at the 7-minute, 13-second mark of the first gave the Bruins(5-1) a 1-0 lead – marking the first time all season the Spuds (7-0) trailed. It didn’t last long, though. Just 1:46 later, Jeff Foss snapped a wrist shot into the upper right hand corner of the net from the blue line to tie it up. Only 39 seconds after Foss scored, Christian scored on a breakaway to give Moorhead, the top-ranked team in Minnesota’s Class 2A, a 2-1 lead. “That was a big key for them, and it was because we didn’t keep the pressure on after we scored,” said South’s Logan Doeden, who had a goal and an assist. “That was a little frustrating, but we have to keep on them.” The same thing happened in the second period. After Doeden tied it up 45 seconds into the stanza, Pat Deitz scored for Moorhead just 37 seconds later. “We had a couple of key breakdowns, and we wanted to keep it tight and see how Moorhead responded,” South coach Dean Wilson said. “We’d score and they’d come right back. That’s the way it goes.” The lead went to 4-2 on Christian’s second goal – a sizzling wrister from the slot through heavy traffic – going into the third. South cut it to 4-3 on a Jake McDougall goal in the third, but Nick Thielen responded for Moorhead just nine seconds later. “It was good to see us (answering), and the biggest one was in the third,” Spuds coach Dave Morinville said. “Nick got after it and got to the net.” Moorhead goaltender Joe Duncan was the difference in the third period, stopping 13 shots. The Spuds had just six shots against South netminder Sean Deichert. “In the third period, it was just a matter of getting it behind Duncan, and we didn’t do it,” Wilson said. “We put it on the dotted line three or four times, but couldn’t score. “I know we’ll get better,” he added. “I wish we played them again.” The win was a bit of redemption for the Spuds, who lost to South 5-4 last season.

GAME #8 Moorhead 3 – Centennial 4 (7-1-0) Tue. Dec. 26, 2006

Moorhead boys hockey coach Dave Morinville eluded to his team’s first-period play for the answer to why his team lost its first game of the season Tuesday against Centennial. Despite scoring first, he said that his team came out flat, something that it was never able to break out of. “We were not very good in the first period,” Morinville said. “We have had a lot better first periods than we played tonight, and I think it caught up with us.” Although they had an early lead, the No. 1-ranked Spuds, were unable to maintain it and lost 4-3 to the Cougars (5-3) in the quarterfinals of the Schwan Cup at the Xcel Energy Center. Centennial’s Jordan Singer had a hat trick, including the game-winning goal with 9:57 remaining in the third period. “He played pretty good,” Morinville said. “We had a lot of chances, but we just couldn’t finish.” The Spuds (7-1) outshot Centennial 35-27. Centennial is unranked in the Minnesota Class 2A poll. “They are a good team,” Morinville said. “I have been telling people all year that I didn’t think we were worthy of the No. 1 ranking everyone was giving us.” Moorhead will play at 3 p.m. today against Bloomington Jefferson, which lost to White Bear Lake 7-3 on Tuesday. Bloomington Jefferson defeated the Spuds 6-1 last season. “It’s not the end of the season, hopefully we can grow up and learn from it,” Morinville said. “It will be interesting to see how we play tomorrow.”

GAME #11 Moorhead 7 – St. Cloud Apollo 1 (10-1-0) Sat. Jan. 6, 2007

Moorhead’s boys hockey team wasn’t on the power play for all 51 minutes of its game against St. Cloud Apollo on Saturday – it just looked like it. The Spuds unleashed an offensive barrage on the Eagles, earning a 7-1 victory at Moorhead Sports Center. Moorhead outshot Apollo 60-11 in the victory. “We definitely wanted a lot of shots,” said Pat Deitz, who scored two goals in the win. “We stressed working the puck and passing all week. We did that and got a lot of pressure.”
It took a little while for the Spuds to break through, but Jordy Christian broke the tie with a goal 11 minutes, 27 seconds into the game. That opened the floodgates for Moorhead, as Deitz scored his pair of goals within the next 4:33. “Pat has been hot lately,” Moorhead coach Dave Morinville said. “We got pressure on them, and looked for seams. We had some pretty goals.” Christian also had two goals in the win. Christian and Deitz are tied for the team lead with 15 goals apiece. Moorhead led 4-0 after two periods, but held a 40-6 advantage in shots through the first 34 minutes. “We were moving the puck,” Deitz said. “That’s great when that happens, because that’s what you’re looking for.” John Lee added a power-play goal in the second, while Patrick Beaudry and Jeff Foss scored along with Christian in the third. It was Beaudry’s first goal of the season. A scary moment came with 2:41 to go in the game. Apollo forward Seth Baughman was hammered by a blistering, legal check from Moorhead’s Matt Penner just inside the right circle in the Eagles zone. Baughman went down to all fours before laying face down on the ice. There was a 26-minute delay while he was on the ice, and he was taken from the ice on a stretcher. “I think he got caught with his head down, and they told me it was slight whiplash,” Apollo head coach Craig Larson said. “But he’s a big kid (6-foot-2, 230 pounds), and he’s going to be all right.”

GAME #15 Moorhead 5 – Warroad 1 (13-1-1) Sat. Jan. 20, 2007 @ Moorhead

Nick Thielen had recently complained to his coaches that he thought he was struggling offensively. The flashing red lights behind the nets at the Moorhead Sports Center signaled the end of that mini-slump. After not scoring a point in his previous four games, Thielen notched two spectacular goals to lead Moorhead to a 5-1 win over Warroad on Saturday. “He gets down that he wasn’t scoring and he’s the second-leading scorer on the team,” Spuds coach Dave Morinville said, laughing. “He says he’s having an off year. A few other guys wish they had an off year like that.” Thielen’s first goal was special, and it broke the game wide open for the Spuds (13-1-1). The weird thing was that it was set up by a hooking penalty from Tanner Lee. With the Spuds clinging to a 2-1 lead, Warroad (12-5-1) had its sights set on an equalizer with the man advantage. But Jordy Christian won the first faceoff after the penalty, and played it right to Thielen. After faking out one defender, the Moorhead junior carried the puck nearly the length of the ice with another defender draped all over him. The Warroad goaltender came out for a poke check, Thielen crossed the puck over and beat the netminder for the short-handed goal. “Jordy (Christian) made a great play on the faceoff and got the puck right to me,” Thielen said. “… That was a big goal because I think it took their confidence away and gave us confidence.” Morinville said he thought the short-handed goal was the turning point of the game. “That was a chance for them to turn it around, and we score,” Morinville said. “That really broke their backs.” The Spuds added two more goals in the third period, including Thielen’s second with 1:54 to play. Thielen took a pass from Pat Deitz at the blue line and skated in all alone. He lost control as he closed in on the crease, and didn’t even get a shot off. However, the momentum of the puck carried it through the crease – and right through the Warroad goalie’s legs as he slid across the front of the goal. “I lost control, and was lucky that he was sliding where he was,” Thielen said. “It was the middle of his stride. That was lucky.” Deitz, Devin Nitzkorski and Sean Ambrosie also scored for the Spuds. Thielen now has 12 goals and 20 assists on the season. Only Christian (17 goals, 23 assists) has more points for the Spuds. Fifth-ranked Roseau is up next for the Spuds, as the Rams come to the Moorhead Sports Center on Tuesday. The puck drops at 6 p.m.

GAME #16 Moorhead 6 – Roseau 1 (14-1-1) Tue. Jan. 23, 2007 @ Moorhead

It took Moorhead a little more than a period to get its pyrotechnics lined up on Tuesday. Once the Spuds’ fireworks display was organized, however, it was pretty impressive. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, second-ranked Moorhead exploded for five goals in the second to blast No. 5 Roseau 6-1 at Moorhead Sports Center. “It’s awesome when it’s going like that,” said Spuds defenseman Jeff Foss, who had two power-play goals on a pair of rockets from the point. “The whole team is going and going, the passing is going good, and shots are getting through, and the defense is shutting them down.” Moorhead was lackadaisical in the first period, right from the opening faceoff. Aaron Ness scored for the Rams (16-2) on a breakaway just 32 seconds into the game. “That’s a pretty tough spot to put your goaltender in – having to stop a breakaway 30 seconds into the game,” Spuds coach Dave Morinville said. “We were playing like we were hoping to win, instead of playing to win. There’s a big difference.” The difference showed in the second period. Jordy Christian got things rolling for the Spuds (14-1-1) in the second – all because of a Roseau mistake. Behind the Roseau net, a Rams defender inexplicably passed the puck straight to Christian right in front of the goal. The Spuds senior wasted little time banging it home to tie the game. “They gave an assist to (Nick Thielen), but our guy should’ve gotten an assist on that play,” Roseau coach Scott Oliver said. “He passed it right to him, and that’s the kind of mistake you can’t make against Moorhead.” That set off a scoring barrage for the Spuds. Foss and Devin Nitzkorski each scored shortly after Christian, making it 3-1 – giving Moorhead three goals in a span of 3 minutes, 9 seconds. “We got some momentum going, and I think it got them on their heels,” Morinville said. “We get a break, then bam, a power-play goal. And then we bang in another score. All of a sudden it’s 3-1.” Foss and Pat Deitz added goals 1:32 apart late in the second, making it 5-1 entering the final stanza. “We didn’t have any intensity at all in the first period, and you can’t do that,” Foss said. “In the second period, we showed that jump. “…This sends Roseau a good message that we are a tough team to beat.” Deitz added another goal in the third to end Roseau’s 11-game winning streak. Both Rams losses are to the Spuds.

Impressive. You are a true fan of the Spuds. I never doubted it myself but you have erased any doubt in anyone else's mind. Although why you felt the need I'm not sure. No matter. Section 8 AA & A state champs!

If so "Up for Grabs" will end with a thud
I have it on authority that comes straight from heaven

The term "up for grabs" was coined by a fool
Whose teams continuously fail on that frozen pool
If one wants to know where the champion lays
He must look no further than the pews on sundays
Because as we all know when it comes to victories
Nobody can compete with the dioceses

The catholics are good
no argument here
but the northern boys at the X
will skate without fear
they may wear black with orange or gold with blue
red, moroon, green or some other type hue
but one thing we know their game won't be bad
because they came from the northern sections that are all
up for grabs

A victory from the North many would cheer
No big huge suburb nor Catholic to fear
But many a a time , has been sung this tune
It aint gonna happen any time soon

The Stars are in heaven, they wont fall from grace
And if that should happen, another Catholic wins the race
The Northern teams' chances look pretty drab
Even if slappy insists that its all "Up for Grabs"

The only thing really "Up for Grabs" is why the "fall away" author of this thread has not been to visit the place shown on PBs last post (reply #752 )in the Wait Until Lent thread to repent for not supporting the Catholics.
