Any predictions for tonight's games? Are any key players back from injuries, illnesses or suspensions?

Are all three Rochester teams really playing at Graham Arena tonight? If so, cool. I'll just be moving from rink to rink like we do at the holiday tournaments. I assume one game will be on Graham 4.

I got to watch the tail end of the Mayo v Blake game last night. Blake had way more depth but Mayo's top players were able to skate with them. The Blake players are all fast and have very good size. Can you imagine being able to put together a team like that if they all grew up in your local association?

The game was 1-1 and appeared to be headed to OT but then there was a scramble around the Mayo net and the Blake forward clearly kicked it in. I had a great view and assumed that it would be waived off. The ref was right there and called it a goal. Wow! I'll have to look up the H/S rule but in USA Hockey that is no goal. While I was looking for my kid after the game I overheard one of the Mayo girls talking about it. She had asked the ref why it was a goal and allegedly he said that since the kicked puck deflected off the goalie that cancelled the kick and it is a goal. Gotta find me a rule book.

Anyway Mayo girls, nice skate. My daughter always enjoys watching the H/S girls and I hope whe learns something.

A puck that is deflected off a stationary or forward moving skate belonging to the offensive team is a goal. Any movement of a skate to purposely redirect the puck disallows the goal and any kicking motion to propel the puck into the net also disallows the goal. The goaltenders actions have no bearing in this as do any of the defenders.

Maybe this is just rumor, but I heard you can now (as of this year) intentionally direct it in with your skate as long as you don't make a kicking motion. Once the kicking motion is made, it'll get called off.

What about the Mayo and Austin game coming up here next week? That one's always a close game. Both teams have lost some talent but also, the younger players have stepped up on both teams. I think it'll be Mayo over Austin by maybe one or two goals.

The last Blake goal was, unfortunately, kicked in. A bunch of Blake dads were behind the Mayo goal, all saw it and were surprised it wasn't called off. The ref was right there - not sure how he missed it...or maybe he just didn't want OT. That said, the game was surprisingly even, given what the rankings might have predicted. Only 2 or 3 penalties - both teams had clean play. This is a good annual pair-up. I hope it continues.

I think Mankato West just beat Austin at home 6-1 or something like that...
IMHO Mayo is better than West, for whatever that is worth :D

It was kicked in and NOT off the goalie's skate, (according to Mayo's center who was right there.) I think you are right about the ref not wanting OT, or something. Still, Blake played well enough to win anyway. With a better bounce, it could have been a tie or even a Mayo upset. It is a nice annual meeting, very good for both teams. Blake's coach is a class guy, too.

Mayo seems to have a problem clearing around their own net and staying focused at the end of the games. Lucky for them Murphy is a good goalie and covers their mistakes. Yes, Blake kicked the puck in but why was that girl uncovered? After the JM game last night we drove over and saw the last period of Mayo's game versus Austin. The game ended 9-3 for Mayo but the puck was in Mayo's end for a lot of the third period and the first and second lines were definitely still playing a regular shift. The breakout fails a lot and a big cause is some of the wings not being able to handle passes unless they are perfect. #'s 10,3,4,9,22 apparently need engraved invitiations before they will(can?) catch a breakout pass. The puck goes to them and then bounces back toward their own end. They need to get their nose pointed up ice, start deeper and have momentum up ice and then get their stick perpendicular to the pass. They all seem to do fine once somebody starts the momentum toward their opponents net. Do the H/S girls do open hockey when school is cancelled or on holidays? RinkRat hockey is where you learn all of those skills.

Blake must've had a REALLY bad night to let Mayo get that close.

Farmington vs Lakeville N

Post by Jethrotull »

Lakeville North out-played Farmington the 1st and 2nd periods and was up 3-1. Then Lakeville took to many penalties in the 3rd and let Farmington back into the game. Farmington kicked in one of their goals in the 3rd to tie it up. Kicking in goals seems to be a trend this year. To bad the refs are lazy at times and do not take their jobs seriously. I've seen some very well reffed games this year but it is sad to say that I've witnessed just as many poorly done games. Ultimately it's the player’s fault for not playing a clean game but you would hope the refs would be able to handle it. The score ended up 3-3 in regulation OT. It went to a shoot-out and after 5 each, none had scored. Then it went to a sudden death shoot-out and Farmington scored first to take 3rd place. To bad for them that the official score goes down as a 3-3 tie in OT. Shoot-outs do not count in high school hockey scores or standings. On Friday Lakeville North gave Hastings all they could handle and actually led the game 2-1 for awhile. Hats off to LNHS. They are getting better every game and will be a top seed in 1AA sections.

So I feel bad but I didn't see much girls H/S hockey this holiday break. How did all the 1AA teams fare? I know that JM had some trouble, Century had situation normal and Mayo was 1W-2L with one goal games. Do all the teams feel that the better competition will help them crank it up for the second half of the season?

How was the Mayo v Faribault game? I saw the score but I don't know the shot count. Faribault has a young goalie and Mayo has some good shooters so the score probably is no indicator of how the game really went.

Any predictions for Saturday's games?
Mayo v Mankato West
JM v Austin
Lakeville North v Rosemount
Lakeville South v Apple Valley
Owatonna v Dodge County

Good Luck Mayo girls. I was planning to go and watch but the schedule change messed up my plans.

Mayo 3 Mankato West 0

Good win for the Spartans in Mankato!
This Mayo squad has the ability to skate with anybody, when they have their minds in the game. Look at the games against good AA (Duluth, Centennial & Anoka) teams and top ranked Blake in A, all these games were one goal games. Some nice wins against good 1A teams in Big Nine & Siver Bay.
Yes, it would have been nice to win a couple of those AA games, but I will say from all the talk throughout the summer on this thread, the common thought was that last years senior class graduating would really hurt this squad. Mayo has continued to win the games they should. They need to win more of the games against Twin Cities squads, although close, they are not winning those games.
I will say its hard to prepare your game and stay focused when playing in games where the score is 6-0 or 7-3 and your outshooting the other team, 50 - 8.
This is the home strech, and Mayo must eye the prize of state(is it 3 in a row?) , and that will have to go through Lakeville North, who plays very good competition every night in the Lake Conference.
Okay, I've ranted enough...

Go Spartans :D
