Grand Rapids Coaching Opening
Moderators: Mitch Hawker, east hockey, karl(east)
That was not the same goalie that they had all the way up. They were talking about getting a move in who ended up being their starter. He actually had a good season if you look at the games that he played in. I think the issue there was the fact that they were playing 3 goalies until into January so I am not sure if the kid who finished it off for them was ever able to really settle into the roll.hadenuf wrote:It was too bad for last year's seniors that Rothstein didn't pull up a bantam goalie. Either one was better than the upper classmen. That could have been what alot of parents were unhappy about. Rapids had plenty of experience on the blueline and capable forwards. Plenty of freshman play varsity hockey. The net tender was always the weak link for this group.
I went to some of their games through out the year and have to admit that I thought that the issues were more with scoring than D or in the net. Scary to watch them make one last pass down the ice and lose it rather than take a shot on net.
I think they can make it to StP but Klatt is going to have to get that team playing consistently and is going to have to figure out the scoring issues that they had. I watched the last game of the year in Duluth and was amazed at how many open nets they missed in the last period of the last game with their top kids on the ice.
Who says the freshman goalie(s) would even want to leave their buddies in Bantams and play HS a year early?hadenuf wrote:It was too bad for last year's seniors that Rothstein didn't pull up a bantam goalie. DJ, thanks for the link. That interview has me stoked to see the Greenway/Rapids rivalry renewed. Until you have attended that game in person, you cannot understand how intense that rivalry is. It is easily a top five rivalry in the state. As Coach Clafton stated, the rivalry between the two communities goes beyond hockey and it is occurring 365 days a year. I was also impressed that Coach Clafton gave credit to Bird Lawson and also Pat Guyer for the resurgence of Raider hockey. That showed a lot of class.
