Re: Wild Card
Now the Twins have a easier win against the Padres with Johan on the mound without facing Peavy. However, San Diego will take tomorrow's game, and I still think that they will represent the NL in the World Series agianst the Twins.

The Twins need to capitalize on this stretch of games. This is the easiest part of their schedule coming up, and they need to take advantage of it.
-------------------

"75 percent of the world is covered by water. Re: Wild Card
Twins are +2 on where they were record wise last year, yet you'd think Gardy's job was in jeopardy listening to KFAN. With the peicemeal infield (Williams?) the Twins are over acheiving so far. If Radke, Nathan, Romero and Santana stay healthy the Twins will be fine.

The White Sox are off to the 8th best start ever in Major league history. It's way too early to worry about things beyond the Twins control. Besides the Wild Card team has won the past three World Series, Karma?

Stats
Here's some more stats to chew on. Saw in the latest ESPN The Magazine (Maria Sharapova on the cover <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":b"> ) that Gardy has the 2nd best winning percentage in extra inning games with a .638(behind Ken Macha of the A's at .684). Like I said before, I rarely see the Twins lose in extra frames and that will become very important near the end of the year and into the playoffs as the games seem to get closer and closer. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">

Re: Stats
And expect Gardy to over take Macha by the end of the year. I mean, look at the A's this year. The only thing going for them in not losing Macha's lead over Gardy is that they aren't good enough to force extras. Also in that same issue of ESPN the Magazine, in the MLB part at the back, Gammons mentions Jesse Crain has one of four future dominant closers (The other 3 are Gary Majewski of Washington, Mike Gonzalez of Pittsburgh, and Craig Hansen of the Univ. of St. Johns (NY)). What an amazing start he has had. And actually, if you look at it, so has Gonzalez- 75 K's through 59 innings through June 4th, according to Gammons.

Back to the A's, what has happened to Barry Zito? One of the most dominating pitchers a couple years ago, now he is just awful.
-------------------

"75 percent of the world is covered by water. Re: Stats
Personally, I think Zito needs a change of scenery. He's thinking too hard and putting too much pressure on himself. If he switches pitching coaches and surroundings, I think he will rebound and get back to being a solid 1 or 2 starter. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

That was a good article, with a lot of obscure stats. Anyone else "minorly" frustrated with the balls/strikes during yesterday's game? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/mad.gif ALT=">:">

And yes, here come the Indians. I thought they, not the White Sox, would challenge us this year but then they dropped back a lot and I forgot about them. Twins
I hope the Twins turn around as well. I see them starting it this week. I really hate to say it, but if things don't change, it sure doesn't look like the Twins will get their 4th straight division title in a row. The Wild Card however is very possible and I think the Twins are exrememly capable of getting it.

Re: Stats
Anyone read the Souhan column where he said the Twins should go and get Joe Randa? How would you feel about that? I personally think we need help at 3rd base (Cuddyer is way too streaky and is not the best defensive 3rd baseman). And Cuddyer said himself that he was better at 2nd. Just think of this lineup:

1. Shannon Stewart, LF
2. Lew Ford, DH
3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Torii Hunter, CF
5. Jacque Jones, RF
6. Justin Morneau, 1B
7. Joe Randa, 3B
8. Nick Punto/ Mike Cuddyer, 2B
9. Juan Castro, SS

Better offensively and defensively, just by putting one guy in. I say if we get the right deal, then do it. Remember, the Twins were in a deeper slump before they landed Shannon, and he got them to just take off to the best record after the AS Break. Maybe Randa can do the same thing.
-------------------

"75 percent of the world is covered by water. The rest is covered by Smoot." --Fred Smoot

Re: Stats
Definitely would like to see this deal happen. We have enough depth in our farm that we can afford to deal some guys, and Randa is not going to demand a premium prospect. He is also reasonably priced. You're right, he strengthens the offense and defense. I hope we can make this happen, the team needs a shot in the arm right now, Randa could do it.

Re: Stats
It depends on what you think is going on.

Is it

a) A bump in the road of a 162 game schedule

b) The beginning of a collapse

c) A leveling off of team that doesnt have the personel to win more than 90 games or so.

They went into the season with the guys they had thinking it would be enough. Forget catching the White Sox. Can they win the WC with what they have?

I dont think so. They need a consistent power hitting RBI guy to get to the post season and I dont care where he plays. Morneau isnt ready yet and neither is Maurer.

Re: Stats
I think they need to get some starting pitching/straighten theirs out/bring new guys up. Mays & Lohse suck. There's no other way to describe it. Yes, I would like to see us get a 3B, but Randa wouldn't be my first choice but he would be a very good player. I just thing TR has to shake things up either through call-ups or trades or something. This team needs a jumpstart.
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Re: Stats
Mays and Lohse are very typical #4,#5 starters in MLB

Although I have never been a big fan of either, they are good enough and I dont think thats the problem.

Id have to look it up to be sure but the White Sox in the last week or so have won a couple of games by 11-8 and 10 -6 or something like that. Our boys dont do that.

If the Twins give up 5 runs, forget it. It would be nice to have your #4 or 5 starter give uo 5 runs in 7 innings and still be in the ballgame.

Their pitching hasnt been very good lately but the hitters need to bail them out once in a while instead of it always being the other way around.

Re: Stats
But we aren't paying them like #4 & 5 starters. I wanna say Lohse is making like $3.4 mil and Mays $7 mil. And why not bring up a young guy and see what he can do in the #5 spot? It doesn't hurt to try it because you neve know what you might find.
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Re: Stats
What about the guy starting tonight? Talk about not getting your money's worth.

The only guys on that team that are "underpaid" are Santana and Silva.

Mays and Lohse are .500 pitchers with 4 somehtin ERA's on this team. Thats good for #4 and #5.

When your #1 guy has the same stats....thats a problem.

Re: Stats
Well, at least they can still beat the Royals. The 19 games vs KC may be just what the doctor ordered for taking the wild card.

OK lets get hot.... but it would help if Mr. Ryan could get a veteran hitter in here.

Crack out a home run
Shout a hip horah
Cheer for the Minnesota Twins today

Re: Randa
I saw a note that the Twins were interested in Randa but have discontinued discussions with the Reds. It didn't say why, but I'd guess the fact that Randa's a free agent at the end of the year may have made him less desirable. Too bad, I agree with Souhan in that Randa would've been a good fit for the team.

The Indians are looking good right now, if the Twins don't pick it up they might end up chasing Cleveland too.
