Rochester has ran 2-A teams for at least the last 20 years. They were divided up North/South using the JM/Mayo boundries for the most part, the thought being to keep the kids playing together through high school. That worked pretty well but since 1997 when Century opened a couple of things have come in that has hurt the old 2-A team system; how do you divide 2 teams into 3 high schools? and lately numbers are declining.

Now we have 2-A teams that are picked by putting the top 18 kids, regardless of address, on the top A team that plays in district 8, the next 18 on another A team that plays an independant schedule. (we do the same for B level as well)

Positives: It will make the transition to only 1 A team smoother, due to declining numbers it's almost a sure thing in the near future. Hopefully we're getting our top 18 the best coaching and development.

Negatives: The non district teams had some trouble getting games, district play takes up a lot of time for everyone and being independant hurt along with geographic location, so they ended up in tournaments which greatly increases the cost and time commitments. The potential for an even greater dispairty between the A kids and C kids is growing and with our declining numbers the high schools will suffer even more. (this year we won't have enough bantams to fill all the high school slots that should open in the next couple of years) We need our C kids to fill roles on the high school teams and right now they're being left behind something awful.

Because of our geographic location and number of high schools we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Would we be better off with a higher level of house league play and less traveling? That formula is what made Rochester so successful in the 70's and 80's at the high school level. Or do we just go to 3 traveling teams at every level, because 2 just doesn't work. There is just to much politics, moving kids here and there because of what high school they'll end up at. At various times our top traveling programs have been little more than a development or recruitment team for Lourdes, or Mayo, or JM; depending on who was the coach or who ran RYHA while all the other kids at that level suffered. The ironic thing is that it's the Century kids who get split up and they've had the most success the past 5 years.

I was told that in Rochester they did away with any boundary because that was making people mad especially in light of the three high schools (four with Lourdes) and that the kids now are allowed to pick which coach they want to play for. Is that incorrect?

Go Chiefs!!

Too much emphasis on games at an early age and not enough time spent on learning how to skate, handle the puck and shoot with accuracy! Parents weren't involved 5 years ago like they are today. Give the game back to the kids, coaches and those working in youth hockey trying to make it better.

Just someting to put out there is that Minnesota was before known for teaching skating, shooting, passing, and stichandling skills. All other states concentrated on physical play. Either the physical play is catching up with us or we are just not doing a good enough job of what we used to do

Limiting the number of Squirt games , being afraid to let teams play physical which by the way HEP has cured us of , to much parent involvement, Coaches treated like it is their job to turn players into NHL stars overnight but god forbid we work them hard.

Agreed.
But this doesn't have a lot to do with the redistricting issue this thread was started for, does it?

Maybe you should start a new discussion--there are obviously lots of opinions out there.

Anyone have any more to add on the redistricting issue? i dont know much about redistricting but hep is really bad 4 the game... it takes away lots of the physical aspect of the game and thats w big part of the bantam game is being able to slow other team down by using your body

Redistricting

Post by yaw aloki »

It would be nice if someone from Minnesota Hockey would add their two cents worth. In looking at the District 8 website there appears little if anything about their redistricting other than that they are looking at it. Does anyone in Minnesota Hockey have the "white paper" as to what is being looked at/discussed at the spring meeting so that organizations can prepare in advance of the meeting?

Go Chiefs!!

MN Hockey- please post your agenda and presentations for your spring meeting and especially all information around redistricting. Local Associations have no idea what is going on.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... puckboy at: 3/25/06 9:02 am

Quick question

Post by pucklover7 »

Does this thread concern the new regional set up too or is redistricting completely different? I don't want to read a thousand threads if it is not concerned with the regional set up.

if there is a seperate topic for the regional set up can someone forward it to me?

Thank you!

Please make some decisions in April, I would like to kmow if I have to move from the city? My children are not here yet from Seattle but if the TC district gets put with District 2 you will oput an en to city hockey. From what I have heard here at Como that is some guy named Rankness's idea. He is from South St. Paul and they can't even field "A" teams so he must do a gret job there.

Elliott:

Was there a redistricting meeting in Feb. where District Directors gave proposals? I thought I saw something in the MAHA meeting minutes about a meeting sometime in mid-Feb. Can you share anything? Any interesting proposals from the directors?
