All over, Centennial Hung on 3-2. Grats to Centennial for the first birth and Hill for playing much tougher then anyone thought they could. From what I heard, it was a hell of a game with Centennial having a goal disallowed in the third and Hill failing to convert on 2 minutes of 5 on 3.

Final: Cent. 3 HM 2

Although Centennial was the better team the "mighty" Cougars did not kill anybody tonight like most people were predicting. This was a very well played game. Hats off to Hill for playing one heck of a game, they had a chance to win tonight. Congrats. to Centennial though.

By the way, I have been to every 3AA final for the last 8 years and I don't recall a game where the Coliseum was as full as it was tonight. It was great.

Here's the recap....

HM scores first....Cascalenda (not sure, he had 1 though)
Centennial ties it.....GOROWSKY
Centennial goes up by 1.....???? Greg Flynn???
Up by 2....Craig Henry (Soph D) from RJ Anderson (Jr. D)
HM pulls within 1

Shots 37 to 26 in favor of Centennial.

Standouts: GOROWSKY and RJ Anderson (obviously)
Also impressed by Travis Vermuelen (Jr. F), fastest kid on the ice in a tight spot...just plain outworks everyone

James PLEASE BAN ME....AWESOME goalie, awesome...has a temper though, that 3rd goal seemed a result of that.

Disappointments...S. Kelly...HM Defense...

Centennial consistently dominated in their offensive end, beating HM's D to the puck routinely. Stutz made some key saves and got much quicker as the game went on. PLEASE BAN ME was, as I said, just awesome...incredibly quick and he kept HM in this game (the only reason).

Referees made some bad bad bad calls....(if PLEASE BAN ME throws his stick after the Cougars score...isn't that unsportsmanlike???? Should've been a penalty...that goal ended up being waved off though, ref's said net was off the pegs...don't think so)

At one point, HM had 3 on 5 in their favor....Stutz made 3 HUGE saves for the Cougars

Overall a good game. The best team definitely won and PLEASE BAN ME's the only reason it wasn't 8-2 like last time these teams met.

GO COUGARS!

formercentgoalie...first of all the kids name is FANGLE and second, hills defense made the plays when they needed to, most of the shots cent took were from the outside of the circle on the sides, so those shots r pretty easy to stop. Fangle played awesome but theres no way u can say hills defense played bad. And how is sam kelly a disappointment, do u need him to score a goal in every game for him not to be a disappointment. He was setting people up all over the ice, and he had some chances as well. But hats off to cent. but im pretty sure that there just a one year wonder.

Congrats to the Cheifs....errr.....Cougars.
OK...His name is James FANGEL!! To correct the person that has probably seen him play once now, he does not have a bad temper. I have watched him play approx 40 games and that is the 1st time I saw him act that way. But, can you blame him? The biggest game of his senior year....and he knew he was right, which the goal judge finally pointed out. You put James on that Centennial team and they are unstoppable. I am not too impressed with Stutz, but with that team in front of you, its hard to lose with even an average (at best) goalie. But, good job Cougars, especially Flynn, Anderson and the unhyped but solid Montegomery.

Centennial in fact has had more success at the youth level then East in the past few years.

Duluth East bantams are currently ranked #3. Moorhead is #1. Centennial is #8 and is overachieving.

Duluth East is #5 in pee wees and just lost at regions yesterday to Moorhead. Centennial is currently ranked #4.

I kinda thought Centennials goalie (sorry don't know his name) did pretty well and made some nice saves. He did pretty well at not letting the puck through when everyone was crashing the net. Though Fangel did absolutely awesome and I probably wouldn't have thrown my stick if I were him, but he should be very angry, because that should have never been a goal. The back of the net was off the ice. I wasn't really impressed with the sportsmanship shown my Centennials fans. I mean seiving can be kinda fun, but when a goalie whos doing really well lets one in and you seive him it just makes you look like a jerk. I also didn't like how the Centennial players after they won decided it would be ok to jump on to the boards and hanging onto the glass.

Hill-Centennial II

Post by ChrisK »

This was a much, much better game than the previous time these teams met over the holidays.

The first goal came on an odd play. While on the power play, Centennial's Mike Montgomery had his stick knocked out of his hands and instead of skating back and picking it up, he skated over to the bench and another played jumped in. The stick may have been broken but it didn't look like it. With the stick lying in the Centennial zone, a Centennial defenseman circled back to start a rush and ran into the stick. The puck came loose, Hill's Dickhudt grabbed it and swooped in alone on Stutz and put away a wrister over his glove side shoulder.

We were all harping before the game that Hill had to stay out of the box, so of course, two minutes into the game Hill's Sam Kelly is whistled for a penalty. This led to the shorthanded goal, but the next Hill penalty a little later was costly as Centennial's dangerous power play unit tied up the game. Centennial dominated the first period, at one point the shots were 16-3, but Fangel played a tremendous game. He may go to the ice a little too often, but he's extremely quick and athletic. Stutz is adequate but Centennial's defense really helped him out, Hill had very few second chances.

The second period was a little more even. The disallowed goal came in the third period when Gorowsky made a really strong wraparound move. It happened on the other end so I have no idea whether the net was off or not, but I did think it was unusual that the refs went to the tape to check it out. I didn't realize they could do that in high school hockey. Give Centennial credit, they came back and scored another goal right away which proved to be the difference. Hill's second goal came on a nice tip in and they had a really good chance to tie it with less than a minute to go when there was a huge scrum in front of the net and for a second or two noone knew where the puck was.

For the sake of the game, I would have loved to see Hill tie it up and send it in to OT. It was still a tremendous game with a great atmosphere in a very packed Coliseum. Both schools had their bands there and it was the first time I've heard the Coliseum announcer make the 'Don't stand or sit in the aisles' announcement. Congrats to Hill on an excellent season and it's nice to see a new school at the tourney in Centennial. I've seen most of the teams in the tournament at least once and I don't see any of them knocking off Centennial if Centennial plays their game.

Sorry to Fangel for misspelling his name (honest mistake), PLEASE BAN ME or Fangel, doesn't matter, he's the best goalie in the state. Had a .95 save percentage last night against an explosive offensive team. The temper thing...you can't say it isn't unsportsmanlike to throw your stick, that's just common sense. Fine, the goal was very iffy. I say the 3rd goal was a result of temper because it came like a minute after that whole incident - could tell he was rattled.

I'm sure Sam Kelly's a great player, he just didn't stand out to me. Maybe he was making plays at the end I wasn't sitting on most of the night. (Or, as a former goalie, I was just having too much fun watching Fangel).

But please just try to admit it to yourselves that Centennial just plain beat HM to the puck last night, generated 11 more shots on goal, and that's why they won. (In my opinion, great defense doesn't give up 37 shots on goal and as many good scoring chances as Cent. had last night.)

Congrats to HM for a solid game and keeping Cent. working for 3 FULL periods.

Yeah, Kelly didn't play as well as he did against White Bear, but there was one standout play in the first period when he carried the puck around a couple of Centennial players and got off a shot to Stutz's stick side that was stopped. I still believe that he's the most exciting senior in the state, noone makes the plays and moves he does.

And Ryan Flynn may be the best sophomore in the state. He's huge, especially for a soph, he's listed as 6'2" and 195. He's tough to knock off his skates and has speed and skill to boot.

No question, Centennial was the superior team, but Hill never gave up and it made for a great game.

Excellent post! I enjoy readin posts like that. Very well put from a different perspective of mine, Hill was very impressive as was the game. Eventhough we are all glad that a ref controversy didn't spoil the matchup.

I vented my frustration on another thread, but after reading yours I've cooled off a lil and am sitting back enjoying a trip to the state tourney

hopefully ya'll will be there to cheer us on if we get to meet the miserable wretch's team from Moorhead! Slap happy loves to rip opponents teams and fans who his mashed potatoes can't seem to beat.

Guess that's all they can do up there since there isn't much happening in that weak section 8<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Good post! I think that's fair. People need to stop taking what I say so personally. Maybe I missed Sam Kelly's great plays, but I'm not going to denounce him as a player! He obviously has skill. Centennial just has everything working in their favor right now.

That's the funnest game I've watched all year. That Coliseum was PACKED!

Congratulations to the players and fans at CHS. It's been a long wait - enjoy the tourney.

The Hill-Centennial banter on these boards has been intelligent and insightful. Too often I see the ridiculous ripping on individuals, schools, irritating accusations about "stolen" players, and additional classless commentary. Not the case from Sparlimb, Centennialfan, FormerGoalie, NoLookPAss. Thanks all for some good hockey discussion.

Congrats also to the Pioneers. You proved that you can play with the best.
