How common is this type of recruiting?

Post by formercentgoalie »

I know a goalie from Wisconsin. (Matt Page, Jr. from New Richmond, basically carried the team in the state tourney last year as a sophomore with stellar performances, good overall skill, and an extremely cool head - was the "talk of the tourney", played well this year too, but lost to Hudson, WI in sectionals - NR's defense lacked all season, too many big scoring chances for opposing teams....notably, though, lost only 5-4 to Shattuck, in OT I think.)

Anyways, the WI Badgers coach called him and asked him to come meet with him at the WI state tourney.

Basically said this....
-We want you to come work at our goalie camp this summer.
-We want you to go to a goalie camp at the U of Minn.
-We think weight is kind of an issue with you. We'll design an exercise program for you to loose weight, strengthen your legs.
-If you play juniors, do not settle for 2nd string goalie. Go to a team only if you will start.

And that was the whole meeting. So, is this kind of "you have potential, let us help you get there" recruiting common?

Does no one have any advice on this...I'd think hockey scout or someone else close to the recruitment action would have an idea!

Sounds right

Post by metromick »

Sounds like Eaves was shooting straight with the kid. "Work hard, do the extra stuff, and we think you might have the talent to make it. Get fat, or even chubby, and the competition will eat you up."

If the kid had a stellar year in a high profile Minnesota conference he'd have scouts all over him. As it sits, sounds like UW likes his potential (no small feat) but needs a bit more seasoning as proof. If you know the kid, tell him to go work his ass off. Proof's in the pudding.

RECUITING

Post by wcha fan »

WITH ALL THE PLAYERS COMING OUT OF JUNIORS AND HIGH SCHOOLS BOTH IN THE STATES AND CANADA MOST KIDS ARE KNOWN ABOUT THEIR TALENTS IN SOPHMORE YEARS. THEY ARE TALKED TO AS JUNIORS AND SOME ASKED TO SIGN LETTERS OF INTENT. THE LEAGUES CANT WAIT TIL THEY ARE SENIORS BECAUSE ANOTHER TEAM WILL SIGN THEM. BELIEVE ME THE TEAMS KNOW WHO CAN PLAY MAJOR COLLEGE AND WHO CAN'T. THE TEAMS SCOUTS THEN MAKE DECSIONS AS TO IF THE KID CAN PLAY COLLEGE OR GO JUNIORS. MOST OF THE TIME IT IS JUNIORS SO THE KID CAN MATURE AND GAIN SOME WEIGHT. ALSO THE TEAMS CAN SEE HOW THEY STAND UP UNDER THE PHYSICAL PRESSURE OF JUNIORS.

I would have to agree with that, I know that coach is a class act which has a great ability to recognize talent. And not just any kind of talent, the kind that will have a shot to get to the next level, NHL. Look at how young they are(UW) this year. The next few years of WCHA hockey is going to spark those old rivalries to a roaring flame with the talent that are going to all the teams. UM, UND, UMD, MSU, UW, these five teams just off the top of my head are going to be unbelieveable for like the next 4-6 years, but that's saying these superstars don't leave early.

But, this is about HS so I do also know for a fact that he will be in town for the MN tourney and will be meeting with recruits for official visit during. And I suspect it will go as posted for most he talks with.

recruiting

Make sure and do all of the things Eaves mentioned. On another note, I wouldnt get too excited about this. College coaches do this to about 10-15 kids every year, just so they can keep their options open. It's all a business.

The Badgers won't be doing a lot of recruiting as they have a lot of young players and few spots open. Too bad for them because there is some great talent coming up and they will miss out on it. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

KEEP IN MIND THAT EVEN WITH YOUNG PLAYERS IF YOU SIGN A KID THAT IS A JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL TO A LETTER OF INTENT AND YOU DON'T HAVE A SPOT FOR HIM YOU CAN THROW HIM IN JUNIORS FOR 2-3 YEARS AND LET HIM DEVELOP WHILE WAITING FOR A SPOT TO OPEN UP FOR HIM.

The earliest you can sign a LOI is November of your senior year.

Not many kids are going to spend three years in juniors. Especially waiting around for Wisconsin. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

This is interesting. If the boy is still a Jr. in High School, He can receive letters and such explaining potential opportunities available to that student. If Coach Eaves has call this boy directly as a Jr. Coach Eaves is in violation of NCAA recruiting rules. The colleges can not contact a Jr age student until July 1, 2004.
However the advice is good, work as hard as he can, Work on weaknesses, work hard on the off ice conditioning this summer and go to a few Jr. tryouts. If you are a back up in Jr's I would stay in high school and play in the High School Elite program this fall.

All I can say is watch out what a coach or recruiter tells your kid. It's like a date and they will tell him what he wants to here. Take it at face value till they start to talk about official visits, even then it can be a ruse. I speak from experience, late in my sons junior year the schools started contacting him by mail thru his school. One college was quite aggressive and after July 1(when schools could contact him by phone) they called like clockwork. At this point my son was sure that is where he would be going, they talked about an official visit, even gave him a time frame. My son put all other schools on the back burner. Then the calls from the school started to slow down, then all but stopped. He eventually committed to a different school. Long story short, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". "Listen, but don't fall in love till they say we want you, here's our offer, will you commit"

Just re-read the initial post and if the Badger coach contacted the player by phone before July 1 of his upcomming senior year, he is in direct violation of NCAA D1 recruiting rules.

ghostfan, and everyone else, thanks for all the info. I'm not sure if he was contacted by phone or what, and I'm not sure it was Eaves himself - maybe a goalie coach? I know this kid well (he's my cousin), so I'm definitely going to let him know he should be in this whole recruiting thing to find himself an opportunity. And, to not listen too closely to any one college, etc. And, to work his ass off all summer. I know he plays on the Elite Leagues in WI, on the WI Fire, so he sees a lot of hockey.

I've watched him play in some big games and he just has a ton of potential all around. In MN, I'd compare him to maybe Fangle as far as glove speed, keeping his head in the game, and he doesn't give up first shot goals often or many rebounds. But hey, I guess all any kid is looked at now in their HS careers is potential.
