Private school state tourny
Private school state tourny
Didn't they use to have a seperate state tourny for Private schools? I think they should go back to it. This would make people think twice about transferring to private schools and have home grown talent teams (with the exception of warroad. put them in that Private school tourny too). What do you guys think about doing this?

Re: Private school state tourny
I'm all in favor, but I think it would detract somewhat from the big tournament.
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

Re: Private school state tourny
One more thing I'd like to add. Many people complain about how tough section 5A is. I think that it is a good idea because they put all the private schools together preventing the state tourny from being a private school show down.

Private Tourney
I think that a private school tourney would be a very good thing for high school hockey. I really do think this would stear people away from transfering as much. I can almost say for a fact that a private school state tournament would not draw as much as the Class A tourney, and withought a doubt not even close to the Class AA tournament. Kids love playing in front of the big crowd - Private schools just do not have the fan backing of public schools. I do agree that it would take away from the game if this happend. Thats taking away some very good hockey teams. I would almost have to say if they did go to a private/public tourney, they would need to combine class A and AA.

What are your thoughts on attendance if they did do this. I would have to say your standard semi-final friday game would look something like this.

Private School - 4,000
Class A - 6,500
Class AA - 10,000

Re:
Don't the semi's for AA fill up? last year they had to go to standing room only and that arena holds up to 18,000.

I'm not sure if you would have to necissarely combine A and AA. Look at football, they have what, 6 classes including 9 man. Then basketball has something like 4 classes.

private tourney
I don't agree that there should be a private tourney and I think the results would be exactly what you are trying to thwart. If we went back to a private tourney you would see more players moving to privates to play for the most exposer. I do agree that AA and A would combine as the MSHL would probably not want three classes for the tournament. This would eliminate a lot of small schools from the tournament experience. You may or may not see the crowds of a AA tourney, but the scouts would be there, and players with hopes for their futures would gravitate there.

If this were to happen it is conceivable that a few of the privates would go the way of Shattuck. Just think of the number of players that would move over if they could attend a private, local school, with all the benefits of Shatttuck, without the cost.

Bad idea!
Ridiculous idea!

The State Tournament is for all high schools, not just those elitist public high schools, who think they own high school sports in this state. Is this the "State of Hockey", or the "The Communistic State Rule?

The reason they combined the tournaments years ago was to end the debate about who was the real State Champion. I guarantee you that if there were separate tournies, most people would believe the state champion was the private school winner.

What are you public school advocates afraid of...a little competition?

Re: Bad idea!
There would be no debate at who was teh real championship.THE ONLY people who would bring that up would be the people playing IN the private tournament. Nonetheless..its not a good idea. I mean how often are both titles owned by privates? to me it seems like its split just about as much as its not ( and thats not to say you dont ever have both publics winning) i mean..i dont really think private schools are doing THAT much of a dis service to any of us hockey fans. and this is coming from a northern single A team supporter.

And before you say "well except warroad" get your stuff straight. did it ever occur to you that LOW has 4 canucks playin on their team. THEY dont even go to school in THE USA!? and the small northern A team i support is NOT warroad..

A little over the top cliff77?
Communist Cliff? Maybe we need a House UnAmerican activities committee hearing to investigate. Cliff this is boys hockey not the menacing red horde. Besides most of the best private school players started out in the public schools. Wouldn't you be afraid of possible double agents or moles infiltrating the private schools from the public transfers?

Private or Public

privates
without them who could we route against in the masses we do now.....probably only edina.....how much fun would that be???

Re: The horse has risen from the dead.
Agreed Videoscout.

But it was the Public Schoolers who dusted off the can opener.

Fact: Private Schools in this state and in this country are older than any public school in existence.

I disagree
Hockey, is afterall just a game. If a family chooses a private school for their child it is their choice. If a bunch of good skaters end up at the school, so be it. That is their right to do so. There are many reasons why people would go the private school route.

If your child was a great hockey player and his local school's hockey program was weak, why not go to a school where the exposure for college scouts would be better?

There are lots of great public hockey schools that are rich in tradition and thrive and get attention from scouts too. Plus there is open enrollment, so the better programs have kids moving into their areas also. How many players move from one school to another to play sports, and not just Hockey?

I am aware of a girl who is driving 80 miles to attend a school with a better girls soccer program. Her "home" school has a weak soccer program. That is her right to do so. She has now received attention from college scouts and thus will be receiving some financial aid to play soccer at the college level. Is that wrong? She is going to be able to afford a first rate education now, and it is partly funded by her own ability, and extreme dedication and work ethic to her sport. I say good for her. She is chasing her dreams. Go for it. It's not the athletes fault for being gifted, or having a strong work ethic. Why should the be penalized and be forced to play in the weak system? I say do what works best for you and your personal goals as far as sports are concerned.

Anybody can go to a private school. They have financial aid, etc. it is false to assume that only the rich can attend. If a boy is a great skater he just might get a scholarship to attend that school too. Why shouldn't he?

cliff77 this is fun!
Most not all Private Youth Hockey Asscociations play in public funded arenas. No arena no hockey cliff. It is true that a fee is charged to the participant but it is subsidized to varing degrees by public funds. So the term private for youth hockey is somewhat misleading. Anyway I am not for a separate tournament so this thread can now die a merciful death. VideoScout Moorhead 4 Centennial 3 triple overtime. Go Spuds best nickname in the state!

why???
Private Schools have won a grand total of (correct me if i'm wrong) 3 championships since about 1990. 2 in class A and only 1 in AA.

An all private school tournament would do 2 things...

1) Punish the kids who ACTUALLY attend the school for the education. Yes there are maybe a few of them out there.

2) Create a ridiculous amount of open enrollment. Almost all public schools have open enrollment, kids will just go to public schools with strong programs.

I have not in the past - and will not now - enter into this discusssion with an opinion. The horse is not only dead, but badly decomposed.

However, kudos to Cliff for calling public schools "elitist" institutions. That's a new one - a dreary Monday morning in the office just got better. I thougth everything that could be written on this board had been. I'll have a smile on my face the rest of the day. Eddie,

Thanks for noticing.

Public high school advocates are elitist. They believe the sport of hockey in the state of Minnesota belongs only to them.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... cliff77 at: 3/8/04 9:48 am

Re: cliff77 this is fun!
Cliff,

Although I don't necessarily agree with you on all counts, it's just funny to hear this opinion voiced as it is mostly the public school supporters that point the finger at the privates for carrying an "elitist" attitude.

Obviously, there are people on this board that carry polar opoosite points of view. That's fine - it's what American is all about. But when it comes to a question of whether or not kids should be allowed to participate in a state tourney because of the school they choose to attend - well, I jsut find that kind of sad. As has been pointed out in this and previous threads, the privates have not dominated at the big dance. So to me anyway, it's not an issue.

I said I wan't going to get sucked into this...so I'm not. Re: cliff77 this is fun!
I think everyone agrees the private school students SHOULD be allowed to participate in A state tournament, just their own one.

I think that the main tournament would continue to sell out, and the private schools would get a few thousand to see their tournament.

I believe the White Bear, Roseau, Jefferson South Saint Paul, Edina, Rochester, Duluth East, Moorhead... and everywhere else's hockey fans would still continue to pack the X year in and year out.

I believe it would be boom to the public schools, and it would showcase local talent, and give kids an extra incentive to stick with the program all the way from the ground up.

Another thing is that the Private School rosters in the tournament program should show where the players are from. That way people could all evaluate which programs are actively recruiting and where.

In my vision the private schools could have their own tournament and I think Shattuck should be invited too. Then it would be a real showcase for private school talent.
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

public supremicists
I am with cliff77 on this one. In fact after Anoka won it last year, I went on record as saying the big public schools with their large enrollments ought to be kicked out and they can have their own tournament..............er, wait a mnute, they already do.

Private schools
Once again

Private schools have existed for a long time. Cretin, STA and others for 100+ years. The MSHSL added private schools 30 years ago. It seems that being included in the state tournaments was decided a long time ago and will not change. Private schools have no boundaries, charge tuition and recruit students. Thousand of parents think it is worth it for thousands of reasons to send their kids to private schools, including athletics. I will skip the essay on what is wrong with the public school system today. Youth hockey associations serve communities, not the local public high school. It is not a "transfer" for a hockey player to enroll in a private school. The argument about "home grown" teams means nothing. Neither public nor private schools have their own youth programs.

Come on bob, all your post does is state things accurately and succinctly. Their is no irrationality or phobia or pent up prejudice in anything you say. Get with it.
