Who are the best high school refs in the Metro?

I recognize their faces...does anybody know the names of the top-notch guys who do the big games in the Lake Conferences and other great conferences in the metro?

Not the crew that worked the Hill/Centennial Section Championship. Worst officiating I've ever seen.

not the ones who did the duluth east/grand rapids game for the section 7AA final. they were terrible. and they were from the metro area. I could explain a handful of situations in the game but lets just say it was pathetic.

He is from Crystal and gets invited to work the state tourney. He does a number of section semis and finals and I think this year is his fourth state tourney.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> He seems very highly regarded by coaches. I think he was one of the guys who did the 7AA final. Does he do WCHA games also?? I dont know what the guy was looking at on the ice in the 7AA final but he sure let a lot things go which turned the game into a scrappy and chippy mess to watch.

If these guys are good officials then its fair for me to say that I have seen some really Great ones compared to these guys. By all means I don't hate these referees and I don't blame them for the outcome of the 7AA game, I'm just saying that there is room for improvement in this case. I always try to understand a referee's point of view, but in that 7AA game there was nothing called when there should have been.

in my mind two of the better refs in the metro (and maybe the state) are roger lind and the younger of the carroll brothers (his hair is more red and he announces at the vikings games - dan?)

Willie: Carroll was one of the refs doing the Orono vs. Breck game. This was by far the worst job of officiating in a long time at the tournament. The Mpls. association has to be embarrased by this game and it shows why the teams that have to use them in the regular season complain about them so much. And they were suppose to be the best two!

I was at the whole tourney, and the only really good officiating I saw was the Duluth/Wayzata 3rd place game officiating. The officials werent on TV, so they werent afraid to take part in the game. They called the penalties they saw, and made it a fair game. Hooking and Holding were not penalties in this tournament, which is sad, because they are all season. I dont see why the rules are different for the season and the tourney.

ref101, The refs who worked the AHA/Centennial game were atrocious! Not only did they missed Taylor's goal, which was definitely in, as proved by the tape replay. But they also didn't allow the AHA captains to approach them about that or any other issue. They refused to talk to the captains, which is a blatant violation of the rules. Also, the penalty they called on Hillen, when he rushed the net,was terrible. Hillen was pushed into the goalie by the Centennial defenseman. It should have been a Centennial penalty. Doug Woog, who is a big public school advocate said on TV, that it was a terrible call. High School officiating in this state is absolutely terrrible!

The best ref in the Twin Cities is a retired one. Second best is the one on vacation. I'm so tired of the 'let 'em play' b.s. It changes the context of the game and allows the chippier teams to gain an edge while talent suffers. Physical is one thing, hook/clutch/grab is another. AA tournament style moves closer to NHL style each year - making it less entertaining. The last 2 championships have been carbon-copy yawners in the scoring chances department. Who can penetrate 2 sticks in the armpits and one across the gut? Change ref criteria or move the game to an Olympic rink.

Ref101, What is the problem? Why is refereeing in the state at the high school level so poor? Has the game gotten too fast for the refs? Is there not enough young, talented skaters joining the profession?Refereeing in the USHL is much better than the MSHSL. I see a lot of games every year in both leagues and am appalled at what I see at the high school level. Missed line calls all over the place. Disallowed goals that are in. Goalies constantly kicking the posts off when they get in trouble...and no penalties. Inconsistency in calling penalties against the better teams. Refs making calls based on the scoreboard. Way too much clutching, gabbing and interference away from the puck. These are some of the prime examples. It seems to me that most of the bad decisions result from the referee being out of position because are out of shape or can't skate very well. I'd like to see refs make an effort to get in better shape or get off the ice. I'd also like to see them develop some backbone to call the game of hockey the way it should be.

I WAS TOLD THAT THE REFS WERE TOLD BY THE MSHL TO KEEP THE GAMES GOING BY NOT CALLING AS MANY PENATIES TO KEEP COMMERCIALS AND GAMES ON TIME.

Ref101, Any response to my comments other than,... "well if you don't like the job we do, you go lace em up"...? If that's your attitude, it proves my point that this state needs new blood at the high school level.

No it's more like put you money where your mouth is. Anyone can ref a game from the stands, and I see your sitting in that section. Any other response isn't worth it, knowing what you see!

I think that refs has a very valid argument. I tell my students all the time, "If you don't like how something is done, then get involved and change it." I've seen some truly horrible reffing in my time, however, I don't think that I've ever seen a ref be malicious. I'd be curious to know what the MSHSL tells them about how they "should" call games, if that indeed happens.
