Programs that lose players.

Post by ontime »

I have noticed that Edina is always ranked high in the youth programs. But they do not do real well in sections. Do they lose alot of players to private schools? What program loses the most?

In district 3 (Hockey Minnesota) programs like Brooklyn Park, Cooper and Maple Grove have lost a good amount of players.

Does anyone remember when a community would look forward to the next few years based on their youth program doing well. It was really exciting for the whole area. Now it does not mean a thing with player movement all over the place. Even if a community can keep their group together, you never know who is "coming to town" for your arch rival!

Heck, I know some towns that have to have a "Meet the Team" night because they always have new players in the lineup from out of town!

Players stayed

Post by fstop95 »

Look no further than Centennial last year. Here's a group of kids that won a Bantam State Title and stayed together to win State. Wish it happened more often. Homegrown talent, developed in a local youth program enjoying success at the highest level...without any open enrollment or recruiting.

Hopkins loses a lot of players. But look at the wreck the varsity program has turned into, do you really blame the players for leaving?

All the public schools lose players, otherwise there wouldn't be Private schools!

STA's youth team would probably be the West St. Paul/Mendota Heights youth hockey. I suppose some inver grove heights kids would be in their youth programs too. as for some of the people that

as for them losing some of their youth players. CDH's youth programs are Highland Park, the Como area, west side/end area, and also a lot of the Mendota Heights/West St. Paul youth program kids go on to play for CDH. The Hickeys are a CDH family, that was no surprise they went to cdh. Okposo is definitely not a STA youth program product, he lived in st. paul next to T&C on the River. Perpich hated St. Thomas Middle school, probably would have gone to CDH for high school.

As for Hurley and Forgarty, I don't know much about them or where they played, I don't recall them playing for the West St. Paul or any of those programs.

What I'm interested in finding out is if Warroad is pretty much homegrown or do they at times use the same recruiting practices as others from the Metro? I'd also like to get your opinions on what I believe is becoming more and more a fallacy of the David vs. Golliath matchup. The small school power of Warroad is obviously deep in tradition, but it really doesn't mean all that much to me considering their beating up on "A" calibre opponents. Skip Peltier even hinted earlier that the "A" tournament is dependent upon a power like Warroad because of their tradition and small school feel to make the weekend attractive and marketable. I am getting tired of them dominating the tournament and would see it better if they applied the same outlook of a Roseau who continues to play in the "AA" level. Warroad generally doesn't have much to fight in their sectionals while there are metro sections that have three or four tough opponents year in and year out. Look at Edina's section, they have EP, Jefferson, and Wayzata to contend with, and the occasional tough Minnetonka team like last year. My hunch is Duluth East owns the northeast in recruiting and pretty much only has Cloquet or Rapids to contend with when their good. The central to northwest is either Moorhead, Roseau, or Warroad. I'm not even sure if St. Cloud has ever been to the dance.

So I guess my point is there is more of a monopoly of talent with East, Moorhead, Roseau, and Warroad than where there is so much diversified talent moving all around the metro area. Many of the metro teams end up cancelling one another out during what I believe are some of the tougher sectionals, and the four northern powers mentioned are pretty much aligned to make it to the tournament year in and year out. Any thoughts?

That is not true Warroad will have a struggle next year in 8A. Many people are picking TRF to overtake them next year.

From what i've noticed, Cloquet should have had more appearances than East over the past 5-6 years but East always gets hot for the playoffs and knocks them off. Cloquet just has a tough time beating them when it counts, not because of who guys are playing for or anything like that.

Roseau and Warroad are small towns, so naturally they go through periods where they are down (Roseau the past few years, Warroad the next few), but they get a great group thrown in every few years that plays together on the varsity for 3-4 years together, and they do what Warroad did this year, WIN.

In the cities its a little different because of private schools. One thing I dont mind though is when guys go from great programs to a private school (EP to AHA, or Jefferson to AHA). I think those kids can at least make the case that the move is NOT all about hockey, and does have something to do with education. Not to pick on anyone, but just as an example, Taylor Matson goes to state as a freshman at Orono, a good team, then leaves in a year when his team wouldnt have been as good, then you kind of know its just for hockey.

I hate these threads.
You can say "What if" about anything.
Move on, people love the game enough that they want to further their careers past highschool. Some schools get absolutely no exposure, you have to take those things into account.
I notice that most of the fans frown upon this, understandable, but think about the players.

think how good AHA would have been this year if they didnt lose any of their players. They would have Nate Hagemo for one, Mike Carmen, Erik Johnson... more? THey would be unbelievable. They would have 4 lines that could match the first line of their opponent... amazing!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

AHA

i think its gettign to the point where people are just goin to have to except players leaving, it isnt liek its unique to hockey, basketball players jump schools every yr, it is unfortunate but its reality

o and it is not just private schools that recruit, open enrollment has lead to more recruiting amongst public schoosl because they do not have to deal with things liek tuition and entrance exams that private schoosl do have to deal with
