Either way, UMD hasn't cut it

Just because tUMD hasn't been named the top recruiting class in the country doesn't necessarily mean we will struggle. The more hype a recruiting class gets, the easier they can fall flat on their face in meeting expectations. Look at how loaded the U was when they were picked to repeat. "No talent" tUMD swept them for the season and beat them in regionals. Then underdog Denver suddenly comes and takes the national title. Of course Denver had some talent on the team since they were the best in the nation a year or two back, then fell flat on their face, but regained their game. I don't see how it's unreasonable to expect that from UMD. I know it's just your opinion, but I think Sandelin is a pretty good coach who not only brings in some pretty good players, but utilizes them.

Quote:
UMD is a team of underachievers and they look to be a bottom half WCHA team next season. They bring in some good talent next year but when you look at what they bring in compared to what a few other WCHA teams are bringing in (Gophers, Sioux and Wisconsin), UMD's class falls short. This latest guy they got (Boll) is going to be a problem cause he is penalty prone.

If you compare the "accomplishments" of the incoming freshman to that of the out going seniors when they came to UMD, this new class easily trumps the old one. I'm obviously biased, but I think these guys will compete for the final home spot. Sandelin is going to have to rely heavily on goaltending and defense to get some wins, but you never know if a couple of the forwards will have "Stapleton-like" freshman years.

It cannot really even be argued that UMD's recruiting class is even among the top few in the WCHA, let alone all of college hockey. Minnesota is a lock for the best class now that they landed Kessel. Their class was already among the top two or three and Kessel puts them over the top. North Dakota has a pretty good class as well. Wisconsin doesn't bring in much but the guys they do bring in are good. Denver has been landing guys that UMD wanted badly so that tells you their class is likely going to be better. I would imagine CC is pretty good as well.

Then you add that to the fact that the above teams probably lose less experience than UMD as well. Not a good sign for the underachieving Bulldogs. I see UMD as probably a sixth place club again next year. Maybe worse since their defense will be younger and easily exposed by the talent on other teams. The only difference between UMD and St. Cloud is at least UMD has a half decent coach (a bit overrated in his own right though since he has only had one good year).

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... >Finn70 at: 3/9/05 5:58 pm

However, having worked with a rival WCHA's hockey team for 2 years, it was interesting to get another perspective. I agree Minnesota has an awesome class, but I'll bet you that Mason Raymond finishes his college career with more points then Kessel.

Re: umd
You might be right since Kessel would probably only play a couple of seasons. That would be the only reason Raymond would end up with more points cause he is not even close to the player Kessel is. I would rather have a once in a decade player who can lift a team to a national title in his brief college career than a guy who stays four years and leads his team to nothing.

As good as Lessard was last year, he didn't win any league titles or national titles. I would guess Lessard ended up with more career points than Thomas Vanek but Vanek helped lead his club in scoring for a couple of years while winning playoff titles and a national title. I'd rather have a two year player that delivers like that than a four year player like Lessard who didn't.

Save the sob stories about UMD not gettng credit no matter who they get. If they got the top players, they would get credit for it. But they don't get the best players so they don't get the publicity. That's why North Dakota, Minnesota, Denver and Wisconsin win titles and UMD doesn't. UMD is barely better than St. Cloud as a program. The only difference is Craig Dahl sucks and Sandelin is a decent coach (though he sure faltered this year).

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... >Finn70 at: 3/9/05 10:53 pm

Isaac was getting a lot of pub when it appeared he was going to Michigan, but a lot of that changed once he went to UMD. Niskanen spurned the U, McKnight turned down both DU and CC. It happens all the time throughout the league. You are right though it really does come down to NC.

However, I don't blame Sandy for this years problems. Too much off-season issues for a coach to over come.

Re: umd
How can you say UMD is a team of underachievers? They split with almost every single team they play! Even the best like Denver, I can't really say much because I have only seen a few games, though I know they have awsome goltending, and it looks like they are going to be getting some great D in, it appears the only problem is they need a few scorers. Maybe they should get Mitch Ryan, and Rob Johnson.

They can't complain about Licari and Carlson.

By the way, since this is the "Players to UMD" thread, along with Greer, UMD also got a commitment from Jared Boll of the Lincoln Stars. On the season Boll has 20 g 21 a and 266 PIM.........breaking the team record.

If Mitch Ryan improves as much as he did inbetween his Junior and Senior year he is going to be amazing next year.

I saw Cloquet last year and didn't even notice him. Some of the same people I went with that game to were raving about him after the first game this year. It's hard for me to believe but the stats don't lie.
