JGB Select Game
Starting this new thread to open things up for getting a JGB Select Game off the ground.

First off we need to dust off those Gray MHL rules and try to use a selection process for the players that will closely mirror what the MHL is doing for the JGA. We all got a packet when the season started, included was a form for nominating a player for the select team. We all assumed that was for JGA only. We need to put together a form like that and have each team submit at least one players name. That will be 28 players. We also want to bring in our teams in District 8 (since they are a nice bunch of guys) One player from the top four teams in District 8 is selected. That should come up to 32 players. Maybe it would be best to have each team nominate forwards and defense only (the goalies could be selected from the top 8 MHL teams)

If we dress four forward lines and three defensive lines, each team gets three goalies (one for each period), we will need 42 skates and 6 goalies for a total of 48 players. The top 8 teams in MHL would be allowed to select 2 additional skaters. That would be our original 28 players from MHL, 4 from District Eight and 16 more from the top 8 MHL teams: this totals 28+4+16=48

Now we need our Select Coaches. I suggest (this is another gray rule) that we have the Head coaches of the 8 teams in the playoffs on March 5th. They will run the practice the night before the game and have control of the benches during the Select Game.

So far: it is easy as pie.

Now...... there will be some of the above players who are not able to play due to other conflicts. Our well qualified Select Coaching staff will sit down and fill in the roster with players of their chosing from teams in the MHL and District 8, no matter where that team finished.

I have been trying to get www.rinkfinder.com to work all day...... yep, just tried again with no luck. I am willing to help put this together. We can approach MHL about funding, but they might not help out this year, we can approach the Districts or individual associations, or we can have each player who participates pay a small fee (no gate charge for families like they do in the JGA Select Game if we have to go that last route). Bottom line is maybe not so much how to pay for it as just organizing it and making it work.

The concept of "All Seniors", my thoughts on that would be if we have a kid who is a Junior and the best skater on a team, the hub of that team, his coach should nominate him as his top player.

I think it would be important to get some inexpensive jerseys for the players, it would be a keepsake for them.

Anyone interested in helping me my name, phone number and e-mail address are listed on the JGB team page of the Burnsville Hockey web site. The site addy for that is www.blazehockey.com

Good luck to everyone in the playoffs.

Mr T

Re: JGB Select Game
Depending on when we would have this shindig, i would love to help. I am in FLA from the 11th to the 21st of march, but whether it would be to help coach a team or to help suggest players i would love to help.

As far as organizing consider me worthless due to my planning of the trip to spring training, but provide me with a time and a place and i will be there.

best time
I don't think there is a good time to try schedule this game. So far everyone I have talked to will be out of town on different days.

I was thinking we should have it the week before the JGA Select Game, if we wait too long the boys will all be so far out of playing condition the game will lose it's sharpness. If we go too soon after March 7th, we don't have time to get it set up properly.

So if I was to make a Management Decision...... it would be the week of March 15th to the 19th.

No sunshine for CoachGuy
Come on CoachGuy, I volunteer you for something and then you take off to Florida??? Wouldn't you rather be standing in a cold arena than sitting on a warm beach looking at bikini babes? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">

I'll be out of town for a few days in March myself, but I'll volunteer my services in any way that hd1956 feels is necessary.

Hd1956 is off to a great start in organizing this event. I have a couple comments/questions, though.

Is this is going to be a East vs West event or something with just 2 picked teams. Personally I like the idea of East vs West to make it a little more competitive for the players.

For selecting coaches - using the 8 regional coaches could work for this year. There's a fairly even split between East and West too. Although, in future years, it could be an all Eastern regional tournament. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">
Being one of the 8 regional coaches - I am willing to help run a team it if it will help make this game happen. If someone else wants to step forward (COACHGUY), that's ok too.

Seniors - I would like to see this game focus on the seniors where ever possible. However if the best players from a particular team are juniors or sophmores, then they should be chosen.

Selecting players - hd1956's method is as good as any and it sounds ok to me (there will probably never be total agreement with any method used). It's a given that some players that are selected won't be able to play in the game, so I suggest that each team offer alternates for the coaches to chose from.

Goalies - we might leave someone out that should be there if we use only MHL goalies. How about 2 goalies from the Regional Tournament and 4 from the top 8 MHL teams?

These are just my thoughts. I'm fine with what ever is decided.

TC

re: best time
Make a managerial decision and schedule it! With spring break and other vacations going on you'll never find a good date for everyone involved. The week of the 15th sounds like a good idea, a Friday night practice with a Saturday game would be cool.

first two volunteers
As my team, goes my best senior was my goaltender #1. I am sure the WBLO boys, tartan coach, and the EP coaches can attest to he is better than solid. As far as skaters go. 3,4,7, and 17 would be tops. All are juniors. A sypathy vote goes to 18 as my best senior D.

I like the idea of the region coaches doing it...cause then i have no responsibility at all.

TartanCoach...Are you tom or brent?

MY FIRST POST!!
OK, a little sick of reading all this and not having a voice. More sick of hearing JP, Brandon and The Rat accuse me of being the MNHO. I hold my liquor better.

OK, as the EP Coach, MY FIRST POST should include the fact that - while not an original idea - the Select Game for JGB was my idea. I shared it with JP(Rville) and then with Brandon (Bville). I am thrilled there are people who want to do it this year as I was waiting until next season.

BVILLEJRGOLD (I'm learning who is who after reading along for months) and I have been talking over details of this game and feel like we are going to take control of the planning and selection. We will share and ask for ideas as we come up with them and look for help from other people, including TartanCoach and hd1956.

Not wanting to shoot my whole load in my first offering, I would like to share my visions for this game as we go along.

Thanks to all who share the passion for this game and I am happy to finally be here.

EG91

Select Game.....
As EG91 mentioned he and I will be working on the details of this game as far as player selection and things like that. In the mean time we would like to aline Coaches for the East Squad. People like Tartan Coach, Freighttrain ect...

We also may need some more people to help HockeyDad1956 organize some things. Please write down any suggestions you have. EG91 will be on with some details of the days we were thinking of.

BVILLE -

Details
Here are some of the details we had in mind for the game, with some reasoning. We welcome comments, suggestions and even criticisms, but keep in mind that we are not likely to make everyone happy.

I like some of the things hd1956 has started, but here is where we are (dates and times are tentative):

Game - 3/15/04 - 8:15p @ Breck (central twin cities arena, evening, but not too late, avoids HS tourney, WCHA tourney and St. Patty's Day, 90 minutes; Monday night)
Practices - 3/14/04 - EAST 7:00p @ Tartan Arena [unless we can find ice elsewhere]; WEST 6:45p @ Minnetonka [unless we can find ice elsewhere] (60 minutes; geogrpahically split; Sunday evenings; one-hour to get to know each other and figure out lines)
-No affiliation with MHL and not to follow guide of JrA game. (This is not to reward seniors or showcase all teams in the league, it's about putting the best kids we can find on the ice for their enjoyment and a quality display of hockey.)
-Private funding - $25/player (if the MHL funds it, they will want to control it, the cost per player is minimal for 2.5 hours of ice. Also we will look at food after the game and programs (minor) for the fans)
-Team selection group of 4-6 people (these people will check the opinions of other coaches from the league and D8, but ultimately will be the ones to invite the players.)
-Not all teams represented - (this is about the best players, not about involving everyone. Not likely you will see more than 3 from any one team, but not impossible, depending on cancellations/rejections.)
-No special uniforms (East would wear white, preferably a jersey from their assoc., and West would darks/colors from their assoc.; would keep the cost down)

These are our starting concepts. I welcome input, but wouldn't want to waste a lot of time bickering about things, especially little things.

Can't wait to hear opinions.
(hd1956 talk to BVILLEJRGOLD)

huh?
MNHO, jason, bruce wayne, batman, bear, ep coach . . . same thing. We all have alter egos. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">

If it goes down like you got planned and it looks great. Can somebody help a brutha out and tape that badboy for me? Would really like to see what the best of the best looks like.

small detail...

insurance?

Goalie situation
I agree with the players and everything I really do, but you guys are saying the goalies that are in the top eight MHL are for consideration? what about the teams with a goalie such as Edinas? he is a damn good goalie but was not lucky enough to make it, or me, or even WBLB? let the coach of the "all star" team make the goalie decision. Just my thought...
rave35

yeah, right
Yeah, you probably ARE that goalie from Edina. I bet you just use the rave35 handle to throw people off your trail.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":b">

Re: Details
EG91 -

I read your comments and thoughts for the organization of the select game - sounds good to me. Like I said earlier: the details don't really matter to me, let's just make the game happen. I'm glad you guys are stepping forward and taking charge.

If your tentative dates hold up, I'm available to help on the 14th if needed but I won't be available on the 15th.

TC

Great reading . . .
So, I get back home from Dallas where I got to watch the Stars of old beat up the Stars of new and party with some friends and it looks like the genius squad has tried to convince each other that I am the EP Coach. EPEagleGuy, you think you hold your liquor better, huh? I'd say you hold a Twinkie better, too. But thanks for feeding me game recaps at the rink all year, so I could sound like I knew what I was talking about. Can ya hear me now?

What's better is that not only is there one guy who has me confused with your big azz, but three. Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids.

Hope you guys can pull off this select game 'cause it would be good for the players, but I doubt the league would ever go for it. They have always had their little A game and haven't cared for the B's or 16's. I doubt it, but more power to ya.

What's with all the WBO## names on the board now? Not that their contribs are helpful. Will ANY of them make the select game (that won't happen)?

Missed my picks for the rest of the Playoffs after leading post-round-2. Here's my start for Regions (to be reposted in another thread):

Elktown over Centennial
Home-of-the-Braves over Rockets-Red-glare
Hastings over EP Red
EP Black over Tartitans.

SLiPper, you keeping score again?

Game Status
First of all, MNHO, it's EagleGuy91, not EPEagleGuy91. I'm there now, but I wasn't in '91. Yes, I can hear you. Better keep your head up while you are doing the ice from now on.

I have been speaking with some MHL Board members and historically they have had multiple reasons for not holding a B Select Game. There is a League meeting on 3/8/04 (6pm @ New Hope for those who want to help support this) where we can bring it up and make suggestions. I WILL be attending with plans for the game and we will see where the league sits on the proposal. The game would then be moved back at least a week to give us time to organize it. Like last week, rinkfinder.com is down again. I will update as I know more.

As for predictions:
Elk River vs. Centennial - tie
Burnsville vs. Rochester - tie
Hastings vs. EP Red - ppd due to rain (lots of time to fill on 1460 AM)
Tartan vs. EP Black - cncld due to lightning.

They are too hard to pick, I shouldn't pick my own game and I might have to play any of the teams throughout. I'd hate to be right . . . or wrong. Good Luck to everyone!

Since when
See your two most recent posts on other threads to answer your question. All the jabbering from WBO##s is annoying, especially since RAVE already admitted you should have beat them. Contribute some analysis, compliments or even predictions. We all have too much work to do during to the day to flip over to listen to you (WBOs) call everyone a pus*y.

And to clarify, I didn't mean no Orange players would make the Select Game, I meant the Select Game won't happen.

Make it happen
Ok guys, the season is over so I figured that it's time to work on this topic again. I was talking to one of the big shots in D2 the other night over a few 'pops' and I brought up the JGB select game. He mentioned some interesting points: He didn't think that it would be allowed, MHL doesn't sponsor the JGA game, the referees sponsor it; and if we have a JGB game without an official sponsor, then we could have a problem getting officials.

In my arguments I got him to agree that once the season is over, non of the governing bodies can really do anything to stop the game from happening; we can sponsor it ourselves; and that referees from any district could be used, all they need to do is remove their district patches since it's not a sanctioned event.

I just thought that I'd pass on this information to EP and BVL to use in their quest for the JGB select game.

Progress Report
It's Monday night and Brandon from Bville and I made our way to and our presentation at the monthly MHL Board meeting. To keep it short the Board is interested in the idea, but not as a possibility for this season. They are a bit skeptical of the selection process and mostly the likelyhood of putting a good product on the ice this year on such short notice. They seem very interested in supporting the idea on the B level for next season after some coaches discussion on the 31st at the pizza party and after some planning over the off-season of the specifics of the event. They are also considering a mid-season Select Game for the A level and could well combine the B game into it.

They admitted that it is possible for someone to run the game outside of the sanctioning bodies, but they would be doing so without USA Hockey insurance. Also, they brought up that District reps and District Directors have the option of strongly suggesting to players, coaches and officials from their districts that they not participate in this unsanctioned game.

The Board was impressed that there were people out there backing the idea and that there were spokesmen to bring it to them, but felt it was a little late in the year to make it a success this season. They are open to building on the enthusiasm during the summer.

Not what many of you wanted to hear and not much help to those B players in 2004 who are seniors, but progress was definitely made tonight.
