MAHA state meeting

Post by elliott70 »

Minnesota Hockey state meeting is in Fergus Falls on 9/15-17.

It is open to everyone.
Agenda can be found on MInnesota Hockey web site.

If you have something you wish to be brought up please come. If you cannot make it then relay it to your district director (or me).

Elliott:

I see that redistricting is on the agenda as old business. Is it safe to assume that the ad hoc committee could not find common ground to offer a compromise proposal? Redistricting = DOA?

Redistricting

Post by elliott70 »

Redistricting is very much alive. It is listed as old business on the main agenda as that is where it fits as part of the D8 - D4 new D13 district. The interested parties were meeting on that part of the issue to come to some agreement.
But we have a committee meeting on Saturday AM with the President leading the discussion. This will be braoder in nature - a discussion of the the whole redistricting - restructuirng thing.

New region format

Post by DumpandChase1 »

Elliott,

I am just curious on what was the thought process behind the new regional format. Who's idea was it? Who was for and against it? What was wrong with the old format? Do people really think this is fair and better? Did the powers at be ask any of the coaches for their ideas and input?

I have some real issues with it.

new regions

Post by elliott70 »

It basically came out of the tournament committee.

The idea was to have 4 regions with a variation in the teams that played against each other. I was not at the meeting when it initial passed so I do not remember the vote.

It came back up, with most if not all the non-director board supporting it. The directors were split on it. As far as D16 the effect is pretty neutral, but I was against it primarily becasue D11 (Duluth area) did not like it. But it is this way for at least 2007 and probably 2008.

With redistricting - restructuring still in process it could be changed for 2008.

Nothing new.
Biggest issue is resolving the change in screening. More internal than anything else.
Discussion on competing for the national title, so that will be examined to see if it something we (MN youth hockey associations) should be involved with again.

Does that include changing the birthday cut off date to match USA Hockey guidelines?

Also, District 5 keeps telling us the MAHA is no longer acceptable and that we must use MN Hockey or Minnesota Hockey (from minutes: House keeping again – change MAHA in all by-laws, tournament rules, etc. to Minnesota Hockey or MN Hockey. ). Looks like it IS hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

redistricting

Thanks for the update.

Did the compromise talks conclude without agreement on the proposed new south district? Redistricting talks to continue in some format?

RL: Yeah, MAHA is an extinct bird, but hard to break from using it.

Redistricting for 8 & 4 is not being done, but they are trying to reach some type of scheduling arrangement to satisfy everyone.
North - South, East West set-up with some cross-over games between districts. It is still being negotiated with 8 & 4.

Restructuring while on 'hold' is still something being looked at, it is just something most are afraid of - change can be a scary thing, I guess.

But rethinking nationals and providing a system for those interested and yet retaining our link to the HS program with the June birthday cut-off will give everyone the opportunity to open up some changes. The problem, of course, one glove does not fit every hand. Big, medium and small programs have different problems. So do you establish a system that is the same for all, do you give different things to different people to try and account for the pluses and minuses that exist everywhere?????

Wasted meeting

Looks like this meeting was another waste where the reps must just like to get away from home for a couple days. Look at most of the minutes and what do they accomplish.

Are you not being a little hard here? Look what Minnesota hockey has done , Must where helments, Stop signs between shoulder blades. when yo are checking someone with the puck are you looking at the anywhere at the upper part of someones body. What next coaches sit in offices above the rink with bulletproof glass so as not to get hurt or attacked by parents and also so refs can't be abused.
Sounds stupid huh?

I don't coach anymore I quit a couple years ago. I started my own small business and don't have the amount of time the kids need put into them.
