Teams in Rochester

Post by eagleHCKY »

I have heard about the teams being switched around in rochester and i think that it is a shame that they haven't gotten the youth hockey organization on board to help them promote girls hockey in the area. Now i heard that some of the girls who want to get the team started on the JM/ Lourdes team don't have any idea who thier coach is or who is on the roster. I think it would be better for them to know seeing as they are the ones who WANT to play hockey. I was wondering if anyone had any opinons or updates to this. :)

No definite updates. Sounds like Century HS found enough girls to put a team out there, but word is there are many inexperienced girls. The school district is putting off any announcents till the beginning of the school year.

A little information would be nice, though. I'm sure captains at JM & Century would llike to know who they can contact.

The boys team at JM doesn't have a coach either and it's not all that unusual for school to start before winter season coaches are hired. I don't think that there is a posting for a girls coach at JM so maybe the same guy who coached the JM/Century team last year is still the coach. Century won't hire a coach until they decide whether to field a team or not and that still hasn't been decided. Appearantly there is enough interest (barely) but unless they have a talent level to compete safely there won't be a team. I'm glad I don't have to make that decision.

I've had to make this decision before at the JV level. Then at least there was a V team, and you weren't cutting a sport entirely...

teams in rochester

The coaching positions are posted on the district website. One coach & one assist for Jm & ditto for Century. From what I understand there have been applications received for both teams. I don't believe the JM boys coach is posted any longer. JM/Lourdes girls are holding a parent/player mtg as organized by some of the upperclassman. I haven't heard if Century is doing the same. If Century wants ice for Capt. practices, I would urge them to do the same as that time is being scheduled now at the Rec Ctr. I know even with the Lourdes players & Jr. High girls thrown into the mix the numbers are marginal (around 15 inc. goalies) Best of luck to them all.

I think that they really need to look at quality in addition to quantity. Basically, you have to have x number of "experienced skaters" to put a team on the ice. Having an experienced Goalie is nice too, but not as big of an issue in a participation vs. competitive sense.

I would say play JV only as Tartan did last year, and as Holy family will do this year, but there is essentially no JV hockey in that conference or area I understand?

I didn't see the postings on the district site unless I have the wrong site...

You are right, those postings are no longer on the district website. Hopefully that's good news. If so, I hope an announcement is made soon so these teams can go on with the leadership of coaches instead of winging it.[/quote]

Let's hope this is good news and all jobs have been filled & that all will know soon as to where things stand.

It was just announced today that Century High School officially has enough girls registered to play. They did an early sign up with 17 girls going out for the team. JM/L is also doing an early registeration.
Good news for Rochester.

Rochester Youth Hockey is dropping it's U14 program due to lack of numbers. I suspect this is fall out from JM & Century needing to recruit from the youth program to keep the high school programs at these 2 schools viable with the split. Imagine Mayo will have a large team as a result. Could this result in cuts at Mayo?

I was hopeful that it wouldn't happen, having heard rumor that Rochester & Dodge County were going to co-op a U14 team. Guess it was inevitable, though. I doubt that Mayo will cut any girls. If there are enough, they might try to line up some JV games for a city-wide JV team again.

One other thought; its too late for this year, but maybe they could have jumped on the multiple-community co-op bandwagon. With a bunch of phone calls, they may have been able to make 2 teams, (an A team and a B team) out of something like a Rochester/Dodge Co./Owatonna co-op.
