They were pretty close to a Louisville level the last couple years. The Big 10 gauntlet most years is a tougher path then the Beast. I think the Gophs could have run the table against Cinci, WV, Syr, Rut, SFL, Conn, & Pit. To Louisville's credit they do have wins over an SEC, ACC, and Big 12 team in the non conference.
Can't remember if the Kaliq, Barber, and Maroney careers all overlapped at the same time, if so, the WV offensive scheme would have made that trio fun to watch.

If they win the last 2, its bowl bound baby.
IF,IF.
But seriously, they could win the last 2. If they did they would be 3-5 with being robbed by an incompetent official in the Penn State game, which puts them at 4-4 in the conference(in packerboys mind anyway) and 7-5 overall.
Tear up that extension for Mason and double it.

OK. Who do you hire?
I pointed out that the guy that MSU just fired was hired because of the job he did at Louisville.
When MSU hired the guy, a lot of people said "See, thats just what we should do"."Hire someone who just built a smaller program and wants to move on and do it at the next level."
Well, it didnt work out at MSU.
The mindset appears tp be: keep firing and hiring until someone makes it go.
I dont know about that. We fired Warmath, Stoll, Salem and Gutekunst. This guy is doing better than anyone since Warmath.
Maybe the next guy wll do better. Maybe not. Maybe the problem has been with the selection. Its not like anybody hired those guys after they left here.

But anyway, when we fire Mason, I say lets get a guy with this history:
Starts his head coaching career in the NAIA and wins 2 national titles. Then goes to a DII school and wins 2 national titles and is voted coach of the year in his division.
Goes to a small D1 school and finishes 1-8-2 in his first year but in his second year goes 8-4 and plays in a Bowl game.
He is then stripped of scholarships because of the sins of his predecessors and has a couple losing seasons. In his last year he rebuilds and goes 7-4 after he gets the scholarships back.
Intersted? Fire Mason and hire this guy?
The guy is Jim Wacker.
Rest in Peace Jim.

The gopher website is pretty good. I went back and looked at those really rough seasons with Salem, Geezzo Beezzo, and Gutty at the helm. The Gophers were bad then, but I forgot how awful they really were.
I'll dampen the Bowl Week Campaign somewhat by bringing up Drew Brees numbers vs. the Gophers.
1998-2000 (3 games)
93-126, 1213 yds, here's the best part.. 0 INTs

Brees wont be there on Sat and even if he was our soon to be coach for life would shut him down.
Nothing will dampen the spirit of the resurgent Gophers.
But all joking aside, this would be quite a turn around. If it wasnt for one of the worst calls Ive ever seen, theyd be Bowl bound already, just a
question of where.
BTW, in all my years of watching football there are now only 2 calls that I remember that I call the worst. Both invlove Gopher games. The 'interference' vs Penn State and a 'roughng'the passer call in the 1960s vs Wisc. It was either Bobby Bell or Carl Eller on Ron Vanderkelen and it was brutal. Worst call Id ever seen and it cost the Gophers a Rose Bowl bid.
Mason for life.

Saturday's game
The game this weekend is exactly the kind of game that Mason's teams have not been able to win. In the past it's been the chance to contend for the Big Ten, in this case it's just for a shot at a bowl, but in general when the chips are on the line Mason's Gophers have folded up quicker than a beach chair when the storm clouds roll in.
This team got embarrassed last year in Iowa City, Iowa looks like they're falling apart and there's a bowl berth on the line for the Gophers, so with all that you'd expect the Gophers to come out and clobber the Hawkeyes. However, I think the Gophers will once again fall flat and Iowa will keep Floyd of Rosedale.

Can't agree more ChrisK. This game has all the earmarks of past games that they just couldn't conquer.
The 111th ranked defense could get shredded by Tate. However, that doesn't necessarily mean they will loose. Who knows, maybe the Iowa punter will drop the snap near his own goal line to give the game away.

Such negativity.
Someday soon we will look back to the NDSU game as the turning point in the history of this program.
That big win wil catipult this school and their coach for life to many a glorious season ...but only after they fifnish off Iowa and the pig is ours...forever.
Gophers will beat Iowa on Saturday in spite of a hostile crowd at the Dome.
